29:23 Dude, you seriously NEED to listen to 'The Jam', one of the greatest English bands of all time. Review their last four albums, starting with 'All Mod Cons' (1978) through to 'The Gift' (1982).

It’s quite hard to understand how The Jam did absolutely nothing in the US while absolutely dominating the UK charts for several years. Maybe a bit too parochial... I’d start with Sound Affects and The Gift first to ease a new listener in.

This is Morrissey's best album. The sound is sparser than any of The Smiths' work but of course it would be without Johnny Marr wouldn't it? To use Vini Reilly on these songs was an inspired choice as his style is decidedly different to the jingle and jangle that had previously backed Moz. Vini is a fine guitarist that leans towards atmosphere rather than guitar histrionics. By the way Alsation is a dog that's basically the same breed as a German Shepherd. It's pronounced Al-say-shon. I would recommend that you have a look at the Suedehead video as it features a rather nice homage to James Dean.

With this album, you’ll begin to learn the eternal curse with Morrissey’s solo career and that is he tends to puts some of the better songs as B-sides, Hairdresser on Fire, Will Never Marry, and Sister I’m A Poet definitely should’ve made the album instead of Little Man, Break Up The Family, and Angel, Angel. (even if that last one is about Marr)

Also, fun fact, There is A Light was originally gonna be a B-side until someone convinced Morrissey and Marr that it should be on the album instead of Unloveable

I'd throw in I've Changed My Plea To Guilty, Jack The Ripper and Nobody Loves Us from later years as well. Great value if you buy the singles but pretty much inexplicable how they didn't find their way onto an album.

I first heard Suedehead in 1991, aged 14, and it blew me away. I became a Smiths / Morrissey fan soon after. I know it’s a pretty basic pop song, but to me it’s so well done that it remains to this day one of my all-time favourite songs. It’s my favourite Morrissey solo song - although I know many people would put Everyday Is Like Sunday at no. 1 (I’d put that at no. 2 myself).Bona Drag has a similar sort of feel to Strangeways and Viva Hate, with lots of polished pop songs. Your Arsenal has more of a glam-rock feel: the song “You’re Gonna Need Someone On Your Side" really rocks IMO, but if you prefer more mellow music, I’d say “We’ll Let You Know” is very good too. Vauxhall & I has a more dreamy, acoustic feel to it. I kind of lost interest after his next album (Southpaw Grammar), which I found disappointing, although the last track (Southpaw) was very good. I prefer the way Morrissey’s voice sounded in the “Queen Is Dead” to “Your Arsenal” period. And although I have often not been sure exactly what Morrissey was singing about, it always seemed to me that his songs up to and including Your Arsenal were more likely to connect with his audience than his songs from “Vauxhall & I” onwards. Then again, maybe the problem is just that I’ve gotten older (I believe the Smiths song “Rubber Ring” had something to say about that!).

Interesting to see an “outside” and honest perspective on Morrissey’s music because his ardent fans ( me being one of them once up on a time..not so much these days) read much more into his songs and tend to “get him” ( or believe they do ) more than others. Which is why some of the songs even “ Suedehead” one of his most loved tunes might’ve sounded “standard” to you. ..so in a way if you don’t “get” Morrissey you may not see/ hear what his fans get from his songs. Not a criticism , it just explains why I think he always has been an acquired taste. Probably also explains why apart from his first few albums critics have been mostly divided on his other works.

hello AH, morrissey before am manchester movie released re-master of bona drag and did not like 'improve' sound quality and more actual hard copies of CDs and Tapes with black ribbons instead of brown. but not sure be cause price of tapes were the same. hope all released re-master full albums are clear plastics. instead of the beige color tapes which allows you to see the amount of ribbon if you used side A or side B. what happened he cut down. elle for no mix - this album was released then in the 90s but his good tracks for his fans were not singles. his album bona drag is a use of a different language and he stepped away from his the smiths day to sing about london and what he does not sing live hate.

I think you need to swap "bona drag" for "You are the Quarry". Bona drag is a compilation album, albeit with some great songs which weren't album tracks (last of the famous international playboys and November spawned a monster). Most of the other tracks are already on albums you will be listening to. You are the Quarry will give you a sense of what Morrissey sounds like now as opposed to the 90s. It's also a very important album in his discography. It was well received especially among fans and brought him back to the mainstream after 7 years of silence. If that album was a failure that might have been the last one he made. A lot of new fans were made of that album. And if there is an appetite for it his latest album "I am not a dog on a chain" is a belter of an album.

Former Morrissey fan here - saw him live four times and bought everything as soon as it was issued between 1991-95 (purchasing Kill Uncle was not a great start I admit), but since he clarified his political allegiances in 2018 to support a party that even some of Britain's worst racists wouldn't touch with a bargepole, it's so long from me. As the comedian Sean Hughes said "Everyone moves on from their Morrissey period... except for Morrissey", but it is particularly sad to see someone known for the empathy and humour in their lyrics lose the plot so completely. Still, will be fun to see people's thoughts about these albums from better days, particularly Vauxhall & I, a top ten album for me, and Bona Drag, which has a much better strike rate than Viva Hate and is a surprisingly "up" collection of songs for Morrissey. Listening back to Viva Hate now, it does seem very rushed and there are several songs that feel like complete non-events. The main dynamic during the sessions appears to have been that Stephen Street would give a backing track to Morrissey, much in the way that Johnny Marr used to, but the reaction from Vini Reilly was that everything was too simple and boring. Hence on a lot of tracks, Reilly freestyles all over the place in a way that doesn't necessarily fit. For a much better use of his guitar, see "Will Never Marry" on Bona Drag. In terms of The Durutti Column, the debut album is great (and was originally issued with a sandpaper cover, meaning it destroyed any records it came into contact with), but why not start with the follow up, LC, Tony Wilson's favourite ever album: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZqlk4OLjq5qj5I. Get ready to realise that an awful lot of people have copied Vini Reilly over the last forty years.
