You had the same thought about the guitar in the song you did before. JuJu is a timeless masterpiece for those of us that grew up listening to them. The guitars, vocals, reverb, etc were all to create a haunting yet unique sound that could be immediately recognized as Siouxsie and The Banshees. They did mature the sound much more and you may find it much more palatable on the Album Tinderbox. You should try a track, any track from that album. It’s an incredible studio production much deeper, less gritty. There was money behind it as well which makes for better studio production.

Disagree. Love John Mcgeoch's guitar tone and playing and the way It was mixed. He was a legendary guitar player, truly unique. And after he left the band in 83 It was never the same.

Thanks for reacting to that song, Alex, that was me who requested it. I think your tastes, as usual, are very interesting. I think with the Banshees, you're going to find that kind of thin, warbly upper-mid treble guitar is often prominent in their sound- a feature, not a bug. Not on everything, but on a lot of it. I personally think the guitar on Juju is great, but it's surprisingly aggressive on these tracks. Not quite metal but a really edgy sound. However, bass is also very prominent ( a great, distinctive rhythm section in this band with Budgie and Steven imo). On Juju, I would say that it's the Banshee's coming out party, a statement of intent, if you will. Fearless and distinctive. I do think McGeoch SLAYS on this album, as well. Very unique sound and phrasing in his sound, works perfectly with Siouxsie's voice (again, imo).

Damn! This was a strong rock era in the UK. I was only vaguely familiar with this song and now I'm stoked on it.

I kind of agree with the guitar sound being so thin, however I think that the mix is pretty well balanced so it doesn't stand out that much. Juju has some of that guitar sound but the other albums have it more toned down so you may like them more

The first S&TB album I heard was “Peepshow” (1988) it totally impressed me (because of some things you mentioned in your reaction too.) But I was hungry to hear sounds out of the ordinary and was able to cross my hearing limits. Deep down it's a very aggressive pop that goes straight to the hidden senses. (Dark/Goth/post-punk) it doesn't really matter when in music you manage to fall off the cliff... and enjoy good Music (from Dead Can Dance to Morrissey.) / Listening to your opinion, I don't think JuJu will turn out to be a good start for you. In fact, I don't know which one to recommend. 🧐

Listen to the Hyaena album where Robert Smith took over guitar for Mcgeoch after he had a nervous breakdown on tour. Personally Mcgeoch is a master guitar player in the post punk era. Take a listen to Swimming Horses of the HyAena album. Flanger is a like it or not sound. I love it. Mcgeoch manipulated his flanGEr with a knob on the side and mounted to his microphone stand. Check Tenant live in Germany. Super basic guitar song but you can see how messes with flanger while playing guitar.

The post-punk production from like 77-82 could get really, really thin. I struggle with some of that starkness in albums from bands I love. Garlands is a perfect example. Juju is the first Siouxsie album that I really felt like they were getting into their sound, and it would get a bit thicker as they went on.

Yes Garlands is very similar to Siouxsie and the banshees earlier material.

100%, Liz had a shitty Siouxsie tattoo that she later had removed, they were 100% an influence on them and Garlands was probably 60% Siouxsie 40% Cocteaus.

LOL, that's pretty much a thing from goth music, especially from John's guitar playing. I think that with Siouxsie, Steve Severin takes up a lot more space with his bass tone and playing, that the guitar is almost more relegated to certain sounds. Pretty sure that it still sounds this thin when Robert Smith is playing with them. And, it is the same guy who produced 17 Seconds and Faith, Mike Hedges.
