the most impressive thing about this record for me were the chord progressions. It just keeps progressing.

A few people say the MBV album is split into thirds, as indicated by the title. It seems the first third is the most akin to Loveless, the middle third is the most accessible and final third is violent and crazy!

Can’t wait for the follow up album! I hear it’s coming out this year 😜

"new you" is the oldest song on the album from 1994 Kevin wrote it the day he learned that Kurt Cobain died

Wonder 2 was one of my favorite tracks they played when I saw them live. I hadn't heard it before. I was up in the balcony just watching some dude go CRAZY dancing to it while the whole rest of the crowd was fairly still, seemingly unsure how to move to it. Kind of an odd memory.

Notes: Only Tomorrow sounds like its being chopped by a Limiter, and during the solo, Kevin is deliberately oversaturating the analogue tape. Who Sees You is very much like a Bach Cantata It evolves in a way that goes in places you don't expect, but follows an inevitable path. At the same time, it roars. Wonder 2: 1,000 years from now, when beings are half machine, they will listen to this song and know what it was like to be human.

Robin Guthrie open a few shows for them during the 2013/14 tours, which is kinda funny. A very ambient one man show, just Robin with a guitar, laptop and a loop pedal.

Kevin was very cryptic about it but in a radio interview in 2021 he said that the album is sort of a concept album about climate change and like the digitalisation of society (at least thats how i interpreted what he said) but he also said that the he found the idea of a concept album a bit corny lol

Millennials and Zoomers like this weak-ass album because they aren't picky about melodic strength, having grown up on melodically weak popular music (thanks mostly to hip hop and grunge). _mbv_ is not good enough for the vast majority of us Gen-X'ers, though. "If I Am" is excellent. "Who Sees You" is OK. The rest of the LP is discardable.

What about only tomorrow? Especially the part at 1:28. Bliss.
@MiloDCАй бұрын
@@TheCowMouthNot a good track, I cringe just listening to it. Like most of the album, it's melodically poor and it isn't nearly as dense as most music in the shoegaze genre, to say nothing of Kevin Shields' 80s and 90s brilliance. The LP generally sounds like some neophyte band was bowled over by _Isn't Anything_ and made their own album in a couple months. Alex declares the track "sick," and then goes on to expound on his reaction in his usual highly clinical modus operandi. I've watched several of Alex's reviews of albums and songs, and his approach is consistently much more technical and scientific than it is artistic and emotional. Unlike many other reviewers, he reacts with very little feeling. I can respect his opinions as a learned musical aficionado, but I'll never take his advice on what to listen to.

@@MiloDC What music would you recommend I listen to?
@MiloDCАй бұрын
@@TheCowMouth Hard to say without knowing you better. For all I know, _you_ should be giving _me_ recommendations. How's your shoegaze/dream pop listening experience? Assuming you're familiar with the basics (MBV's _Loveless_ and _Isn't Anything_ , any Cocteau Twins, the first three Slowdive EPs, early Lush, much of Loop including _A Gilded Eternity_ , J&MC's _Psychocandy_ , tracks by The Telescopes like "Flying" and "In the Presence of Your Grace," Ulrich Schnauss, et al.), have you heard the less well-known stuff like "2" by Kevin Shields (kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJy3fniobJyIpLs), _The Millia Pink and Green_ by Sway (kzbin.info/www/bejne/novUZ3-ng8mqoJY), Carnival Animals' "El agua en la que tú nadabas" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5nCdnd4dr94h9k), To the Wedding's _Silver Currents_ (especially the last two tracks -- kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4iZiKWunbOJrMk ), "Fall Into Nothing" by 93 Million Miles from the Sun (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pn-0n2x7eayAh6c), Tender Age's "Get High" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/np7VqKCHbNKEhtk), "Teal Kia" by Weekend (kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6GXmGmcrruerKs), and just about anything by The Daysleepers (especially their early EPs and the _Creation_ album)? All that stuff is usually unfamiliar to people who are relatively new to shoegaze and dream pop, but highly regarded by aficionados. I've been shoegazing and dream popping since the late 80s, but it's all still a journey for me. Anyone can recommend tracks, I'm sure you've heard stuff that has yet to reach my ears. My main point here is that strong melodic lines have been a MAJOR ingredient in the enduring appeal of SG and DP, and that anyone who hears a melodically strong SG or DP tune and goes "meh," while remarking how "interesting" other melodically weak tracks are, is kind of behind the curve. I'm not saying such a reaction amounts to a flat-out illegitimate assessment of the music, but it's definitely a rather modish way of appreciating a musical work, and I think it's out of place where rock/pop music is concerned.

@@MiloDC I'm sure you've heard it, but as for an album rec that I think would be up your alley I'd recommend Destiny XL - They Are Gutting a Body of Water. Heavier experimental shoegaze outfit based in Philly. Gonna slowly go through your recs; listening to the 2 CD Rip and loving it-- just wish it was on Spotify so I could have it in my pocket. Thanks for sharing.
