Without a DOUBT, this is my new favorite VP cover - and it's among my favorite A Capella covers of all time. Slammed with brutal low notes, golden-crispy harmonies, perfectly executed riffs, and performed by the best of the best, this one is sure to blow your socks off if you've not heard it before!

Hey all - I didn’t comment on the F#/Gb5 that Eli sang at the very end… Definitely a chest/head voice mixed belt, and it was incredible!

Geoff said he was "murdering" his vocal cords for several hours to record this. It totally paid off! 🔥🤯 Such an intense and marvelous performance from everybody! 💯

Layne's vocal and body percussion was so amazing in this cover. I still have to remind myself that J isn't actually crashing through a creaky wooden door - that's Layne, too! Voiceplay is wonderful, my very favorite, because they choose artistic control over label or management. They take risks that no other group does and the result is always brilliant.

I'm pretty sure dumbfounded silence in the face of All The Things happening was most people's first response. 😁 Also, I am HERE for the Eli love. He is SO talented. I can't believe how much range he has, and how much weight he can pull up into his higher notes, let alone add distortion on top of that. And while he gets the most attention for his rock wail, I think, really, he can sing just about anything.

The song as written and performed by Miracle of Sound, did not have the rap section, That was added by ViocePlay. But Miracle of sound have seen this and gave it ten out of ten. High praise indeed. Don't worry, it gets us all that way on a first hearing/viewing. It must the most intense thing they've ever done. In time you get more used to it. Though I still get tingles. :) Yes it's a B0 and he holds it for 14 or 15 seconds I believe, the first time., until he starts the solo part I think you missed that going on under the others singing. Ten second the second time near the end. Vikings have a bad rep, they were actually a lot more than warriros, though they got their name from the vikng they did. They were also great traders throughout Europe.

I have had the impression the last few releases voiceplay is going for incredible individual productions than approaching a song as something they can do for every concert on a tour (it's one of the differences I see with home free or pentatonix in approach to a song). Hence 15 second B 0 holds or Eli shooting to the moon on a rock yell on nothing else matters during recording.

I’ve noticed also - and I think I know why. 1: VP doesn’t perform live right now, and if you are not performing live, there are certain liberties and creativities you can take in arranging. 2: To me, it seems their music is catered to the “always improving” mindset. I don’t think they arrange and perform to flex on others; rather, I think it’s a matter of them trying to constantly outdo their last project with the next - and although this can be distasteful for some (the thought that they’re over-arranging and over-complicating their music just to show off), it is quite a noble ambition, to always be improving. 3: Being in the top 3 A Capella groups in the world, you obviously have serious competition in the form of Pentatonix, as well as Home Free - and with that kind of competition, you MUST have a niche that makes you unique. In this case, VP focuses on/specializes in complicated arrangements/performances, while not performing live. Home Free and Pentatonix obviously specialize in other areas that VP simply don’t. I hope this speculation makes sense!

You did a wonderful job of analyzing the vocals here. But the visuals also deserve attention. Eli produced all the backgrounds using Unreal Engines, as he did for My Mother Told Me. But for that they recorded green screen. For this one they recorded in a VR studio in front of large LCD screens playing the backgrounds, which he had synced to the music track.

(& he is my fav so i miss him terribly but he will be back (he told me!) after he has served his time in the Navy.) In the meantime I am just glad he comes home to do songs with the guys sometimes! Glad I found ya!!!

I've seen several reaction vids say that was a G0, but after listening to your keyboard alongside I'm pretty sure you're correct. It's so damn low it's almost hard to tell what it is. He does three of them for between 10-15 seconds. He truly is the best kind of freaky freak with his voice. It adds so much to the music they make, but you barely 'hear' it you feel it.

At least you found words fairly quickly. I was all “HUH😱??” for quite awhile. And I have been a fan of @MiracleofSound (aka Gavin Dunne) for awhile, so I’d heard three versions of this that he has done either solo or with different artists (you def. should hear the one with Peyton Parrish and Eric Hollaway). Who else but Layne would do an arrangement of a VIKING song and add in dubstep/techno and rap-and make it work?? And is there ANY other group that goes so crazy all-in as these guys do? Loved this reaction/breakdown!!

Nearly all male voices cap out at the C5-D5 range. It’s pretty rare to have a male voice that can go that high in full natural chest. It’s very likely that Eli is using some form of chest/head voice mix in his belting above a C5 - especially with that F#5 he hits. Definitely doesn’t discount the incredible talent it takes for it to sound as good as it does though!

Yes. You really looked dumbfounded, but so has all other reactors as well. We the audience has begun to take it in our stride by now. The most common remark by any reactor when JNone starts rapping: I didn't expect that! And you didn't disappoint either. 😅😅

They out do themselves every time! I cannot stop watching this, it is amazing!! That first B0 Geoff hits lasts for 15 seconds!! Then Eli has become the Asgardian god of rock, Layne is a beatboxing god, Cesar has become a Berserker, and J None has shown us the rap indeed belongs in acapella! Great reaction!

When dealing with Geoff, you need a full piano... and maybe an octave extension! Eli's belting was insane. Fun fact: the Nordic people we tend to call "Vikings" were very much into poetry with driving rhythms and rhymes. Now I like to think that they were RAPPED. Vikings were 10th century gangsters bragging about their territory and making diss tracks about the Saxons!

One of the little things I personally found gratifying was that, in a song full of repeated "me"s, they actually pronounce it as "me" and forego that lamentable need to modify the word into "meh" or worse, "may." Call me old-school, but that grates on my nerves.

It sounds to me like chest, but there’s a timber shift at the beginning of the note that is usually indicative of switching to a subharmonic; otherwise, I’d be 100% sure it’s chest.
