Thank you for this speech therapeutical tip. American English /r/ doesn't exist on my native language. So speech organs must be "taught" how to pronounce certain foreign phonemes. They need a kind of "muscle memory" before begin pronouncing words automatically. As well physical exercises, this speech organs must be trained.

@@cejannuzi My next challenge now has been how to pronounce consonant blends with /r/. Should I, to warm up, pronounce "rive" , "rive", "rive", "rive", "rive", "rive", "rive", "rive" and then add an /d/ and say "drive"?

Thank you very much for the post. May I ask you what happens with the "r" in the following words (in non-rhotic accents like RP): beware /bɪˈwɛə/, care /kɛə/, dare /dɛə/, there /ðɛə/, share /ʃɛə/, compare /kəmˈpɛə/, careful /ˈkɛəfʊl/, sphere /sfɪə/, figure /ˈfɪɡə/, and so on? In all of these cases the “r” is neither at the end of the word nor before consonant (rules that many BrE teachers teach for silent "r") - still, it is silent. Are there any rules that can be applied in these cases? What about: very, necessary, arbitrary, and so on - here the "r" is pronounced, but, even though in the middle of the word, there's no consonant before it (other rule BrE teachers teach for non-silent "r")? What's the rule here? What about the words: order, separate and the like? In "order", for example, the "r" is before a consonant - still, it is silent. On the other hand, in "separate" the "r" is in middle position, but there's no consonant before it - still, it is pronounced and therefore non-silent. What I am trying to learn is whether (or not) there are 2 separate rules for the “r”: one telling me when the “r” must be pronounced and one telling me when the “r” is silent. Am I missing something here? Thank you!

Hello Ciprian Gramatik and thank you for your kind feedback! In non-rhotic we delete /r/ as the last sound of any word. It simply will never occur. If you are aiming for an RP accent just follow the phonetic characters you see if you check words in Collins Dictionary etc. You are also correct in saying that /r/ is deleted before a consonant sound as well. In between all vowels it will be pronounced and sometimes it will occur at the end of the word as a link to the next word, IF the word contains a vowel at the start. But this must occur with no break in the soundwave. Let me know if you have any more questions! It is great to see you engaging so much with phonetics. Keep it up!

Thank you very much for your kind reply! Your suggestions have been of great help. Eventually, after having spoken with quite a few experts on this issue, and, of course, after having taken into consideration your suggestions, I wrote: 1. the "r" is silent in the following words: car, star, sister, mother, word, person, bird (/kɑː/, /stɑː/, /ˈsɪstə/, /ˈmʌðə/, /wɜːd/, /ˈpɜːsn/, /bɜːd/) because it is not followed by a vowel sound. 2. the "r" is pronounced /r/ in the following words: read, write, red, Rome, grass, green, very, separate (/riːd/, /raɪt/, /rɛd/, /rəʊm/, /grɑːs/, /griːn/, /ˈvɛri/, /'sepərət/) and also in berry, carry, arrange (ˈ/bɛri/, /ˈkæri/, /əˈreɪnʤ/) because it is followed by a vowel sound. Moreover, for the same reason, the "r" will be pronounced /r/ in words such as: caring, daring, stirring (/ˈkeərɪŋ/, /ˈdeərɪŋ/, /ˈstɜːrɪŋ/). 3. the "r" will be pronounced /r/ (“linking r”) between two consecutive words if there is no pause in pronunciation as in: care about (/keər əbaʊt/), near enough (/nɪər ɪˈnʌf/), war and peace (/wɔːr ənd piːs/), far away (/fɑːr əˈweɪ/), more ice (/mɔːr aɪs/).

SPOT on! Well done Ciprian Gramatik! You've decoded non-rhotic rules for /r/. I'm so proud of you!
@maurocarvalho11487 жыл бұрын
In rhotic accents, when /r/ is in final position in open syllables (that is, a syllable not closed by a consonant) it is pronounce as a schwa+r as in your examples be-ware, care, dare, there, share, com-pare, care-ful , sphere, fig-ure . In "sep-a-rate" the /r/ is in initial position, that is, /r/ it is starting a syllable, then it should be pronounced. www.thefreedictionary.com/rhotic www.thefreedictionary.com/Rhotic+and+non-rhotic+accents www.thoughtco.com/rhoticity-speech-4065992

the rounded lip shape is 100% not necessary for an R sound
@speechausclinic4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I totally hear you & agree in most instances. However in some cases aberrations with air stream at the lateral sides with 2nd language interference are reduced if the lips are shaped. This is where 1-1 instruction is better as every speaker does need different tweaks here & there.
@kathywilliams67455 жыл бұрын
MMMM? I always teach NO ROUNDING of lips to ensure that the kids are not making a /w/ instead of an /r/ like in wabbit. I think this is very confusing. When I say /r/ my lips are parted like into a smile. Just saying....

@speechausclinic4 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad you let me know this! If your /r/ is sounding like a /w/ it means that your tongue is still loose and relaxed at the bottom of your mouth. You should be able to feel the muscle tensing if you put your thumb under your chin while you make the /r/ sound. You have to pull your tongue away from the front of the mouth and back. Let me know how you go and if you have any other questions!

Happy to do so, as an opera singer I use the trilled sounds often, however ability to produce the sound is usually genetic so you can either do it, or you can't.

when producing the /r/ sound your lips should not be rounded, they should be up, wide and tight working in pediatrics children replace the w (lip rounded) for r so this is poor placement to begin to correct in my opinion
@madmaster83046 жыл бұрын
Born and raised Australian and this is not how I do my /r/ sounds.
@speechausclinic6 жыл бұрын
Mad Master there is variance. This is one method we use to help clients make a clearer /r/ than a trill or a /j/ as in yellow. It’s easier to stimulate because there are concrete points of contact that helps people know they formed it differently from their substitution. In Australia some natives don’t round the lips or contact the teeth so much BUT the tongue will go back and any difference observed between that posture and this one is marginal.
