In this video we witness the Thew Type O Steam Shovel that was found in the bottom of Wixom Lake being removed. The boiler and steam engines were removed in the prior video. The steam shovel was moved from the lake bottom to the Midland Antique Engine Association. I will be following the rebuilding progress of the steam shovel on my channel. This footage was filmed on October 24, 2020. This was after the collapse of the Edenville Dam on May 19, 2020. Wixom Lake was rapidly rising due to heavy rainfall and the Edenville dam could not hold back the water. The side of the dam failed sending water rushing towards Sanford Village. The aftermath and damage left behind is devastating. Make sure you subscribe to catch the follow up videos I will be filming.
Part 1: (Thew Type O Steam Shovel found in the bottom of Wixom Lake Interview with Owner and Restoration Plan):

Part 2: (Thew Type O Steam Shovel (Boiler and Steam Engine Removal) found in the bottom of Wixom Lake):

Thank you for the great videos you have been doing on the dam and especially the shovel. The enthusiasm I see here brings back happy memories of when my friends and I restored the Buick M 18 Hellcat Tank Destroyer for the Sloan Museum here in Flint Michigan. The journey is just beginning and it will be a challenging one but very rewarding one. Many lifelong memories! You can bet I will be following along with great interest. Good luck and Git er done

For everyone glorifying the quality of this shovels build, keep in mind that these were frequently left in the holes they dug. Often they weren't worth the effort needed to remove them. Essentially they were worn slap out.

I've just been looking up Thew Type O steam shovels. That one is in pretty poor condition and it's gonna take a lot of work to make it operational. I don't expect you can buy parts for it at The Home Depot. I know where there are several old steam shovels sitting there rusting away. My dad remembers when a few of them were still running. The thing about steam shovels is they ran on steam. That means coal, a fireman/stoker, a smokestack, and a boiler.

What an adventure. I grew up in Port Sheldon, on Lake Michigan, and remember exploring all the things that were still around from the time it was established in the 1830's. Which may have sparked my interest in the histories of Michigan communities. Thanks for all your work covering the crane's journey. And the changes on the Tittabawassee River. I'll be following with interest.

There is a B17 being built at a museum in Urbana Ohio from only 15% original parts and the rest is being built one part at a time from forms/jigs/fixtures and 15 years and counting of volunteers. here is the link to the B17- www.champaignaviationmuseum.org/3d-virtual-tour

Tell the guys fixing it up that it is a lot easier to run a steam shovel on compressed air from an engine driven pump (you can rent them at an equipment rental place) than trying to get a steam certificate for a boiler. It is also a lot easier than firing/stoking/watering a boiler 3-4 hours before any demonstration run and then clearing out the fire/clinkers afterwards. All you have to do to a compressor is start it.
