One time going up Rts 11 and 15 with my Uncle I said I had never rode the ferry. He said he did one time and another passenger ask a crewmember where the life preservers where. The crewman said " Heck the river is only 2 ft deep"

Used to live a block off the river in Millersburg. Loved it there. The ferry boats always put CCR's Proud Mary in my head. "If you come down to the river; bet your gonna find some people who live. You don't have to worry if you got no money; people on the river are happy to give. BIG WHEEL KEEP ON TURNIN'. PROUD MARY KEEP ON BURNING."

I’ve been on this ferry. Fifteen minutes by Ferry to Liverpool and an hour or so by car. My maternal grandmother was born in Millersburg.

I grew up with a 12-car ferry to get to & from my island home in Michigan. Harsens Island, Mi. That Susquehanna is one helluva river. When I lived near Ithaca NY my streamlet fed it from the north. Now not far north of me in northern Cambria PA the stream feeds the western branch.

I wasn't certain until I saw the far bank, but my husband and I crossed on that ferry almost 30 years ago on a motorcycle trip. We had a long wait as it is almost an hour to cross and we just missed the ferry leaving. We had lunch at a little place right at the ferry stop, and were done eating when the ferry returned! I didn't know it was so historic, but my husband was impressed by the mechanics of the craft. Thanks so much for sharing!

Nice to see Millersburg. I had customers there when I was working full time in sales. I believe the ferry from my home area is the second oldest in the country.. Bemus Point to Stow NY ferry crossing Chautauqua Lake, NY.

I'm planning a trip to Maine later this month and was in awe of the number of passenger and vehicular ferries they have up there, which made me think of Pennsylvania's lone vehicular ferry on the Susquehanna River. Lo and behold, this video pops up on my home page! Well done and thanks for helping inspire a future wandering PA-daycation!

Glad to have you here in Millersburg! With the ferry channel, it can run pretty much all summer even with low water. The only time they really stop is if the winds are too high which can push the ferry into the ferry wall.

If you are ever in coastal North Carolina catch the Fort Fisher ferry. It runs from South Port and crosses the Cape Fear River to the Civil War Fort . Not as quaint, but it can hold about 20 cars and only costs a few dollars. It also saves about 30 minutes of driving time up Highway 17 to the Fort.

Really cool video. How long does it take to cross the river? My guess is about 20 minutes. The river seems shallow, even towards the middle. Grass growing in spots and debris sticking out of the water. It takes some skill to avoid the shoals and not break the paddle wheels, I'd imagine.
