If you don't have a hammer, pull the headrest off and use the metal prods as a hammer
@AntagonisticAltruist
@AntagonisticAltruist 7 жыл бұрын
More than likely that won't work at all. There's videos on youtube showing people hitting the windows with much heavier things without the window breaking. One MIGHT be able to use the head rest to jam the metal between the window and the door and then pull really hard, but in most cases there won't be time for that. Even half the tools you can buy to break windows don't work on the first few tries, especially if you're panicked and not hitting the right place on the window.
@Sulueti
@Sulueti 7 жыл бұрын
AntagonisticAltruist Personally I found that if you wedge the seatbelt metal prod between the window and the edge, then smack it with the prods from the headrest it will shatter. Then again, I agree - it's all up to the individual to not panic

That kinda happened a couple years ago during a flood in Australia, mother and three kids. Mother could have saved herself, but instead fumbled in the back trying to save her kids, she managed to save one by I think essentially shoving her nine-year-old out of the door or window, girl was able to swim to the surface and survived by swimming to the shore, but the other two and the mother drowned still trapped in the car. I suppose the even sadder part is the mother never knew if she successfully managed to save the surviving daughter or not.

In 1969 I was 8 years old and my mother's car entered floodwater. We could feel the car spinning around in the current, hitting rocks and submerged trees. The water was dark brown and almost up to the windows. Thank God our Mercury Cougar floated long enough to run aground on a sand bar and we all got out. The flood was a serious one. Hundreds of race horses who had not been evacuated drowned and were found up to 15 miles downstream at the beach in Oceanside.

There was time to open the door while it flew but driver had the doors locked. The moment we were fully underwater, I knew we're dead. None of us can communicate because we're all underwater. No one had any idea what to do. Door won't open, window won't slide down. That's how I woke up, ran out of oxygen holding my breath and body forced me to swallow air. The most important detail to breaking a car window is to strike it near the edge so it can’t flex. Hit it really hard the the headrest base or the seatbelt buckle. If you’re trying to get into a car in an emergency. You can quickly remove a receiver hitch to strike with. But even then be sure to hit near the edge or it may just bounce.

That SUV at the beginning is more than capable of traversing over water so long as you don't flood the intake, that's the "breathing" part of the engine where is sucks in air. Adding a snorkel will help prevent this from happening.

In newer cars, most front windows and all windshields will NOT shatter/break open even with the proper tool, because they're laminated these days, so you will need to escape through the back windows, sunroof, or rear window.

Is it possible to get the door open? Or what if people have the window half open, can the door be opened?
@bri961

Curious question. I know that it will be hard to open the door because the force of the water trying to get in the car while the car is submerging and water still filling. but is it possible to open the door if the car is fully submerged? and the inside of the car is already full of water so the pressure inside the car = the pressure outside the car
@Amphitera
@Amphitera 2 жыл бұрын
it takes 1-2 minutes for the pressure to equalize, and only then can you open the door. Few people can hold their breath that long, especially in a stressful situation.

Please note many of the new cars have laminated glass or polycarbonate glass. *Only tempered glass shatters with safety tools!* If you have laminated glass in your vehicles please make sure you know which of your windows is tempered glass before you waste time trying to break a laminated or polycarbonate window.

What if the whole front driver/passenger and backseat windows are submerged in water? I heard its not safe to break windows due to the force of water, so go for the back window?

If you don’t have a glass breaker you can use the metal end of the seatbelt. After removing your seatbelt hit a corner of the glass with the metal end as hard as you can

This is a very controlled environment. Most people have accidents and hit the water so hard. There are so many missing people at the bottom of rivers etc… they go missing some 30 years or so. At least now independent underwater recovery teams are locating the vehicles returning the missing to their families sadly….

Take the head rest out and use the metal end… that’s the whole point of the headrest being able to come out is so you can break your window if submerged under water or if it won’t roll down and you need out
@tomhubbard8510
@tomhubbard8510 4 жыл бұрын
Good that they don't tell you that you can get out under water if the window is open. Because the door still won't budge as the pressure isnt equalised until you hit the bottom (which can be a long way down).

Seeing as this could be a life a death situation, it's horrifying to observe how much bad advice there is in the comment section here (often with tons of likes by people who heard the same wrong information before). Most of the suggestions that call for improvisation, from using the headrest to using belt buckle, just won't work in the short amount of time you have. I would strongly urge people to watch a few more youtube videos on what it really looks like to escape a sinking car and how hard it is to break a window even under better circumstances, as well as go on amazon or somewhere and buy a few window breaking tools. A lot of very effective ones aren't expensive, and they'll be priceless in an emergency.

I need to learn THIS.. Recently there was an incident here in My Country Sabah, Malaysia where the car initiated to cross a bridge with no rail while heavy flowing water was flowing through it caught up with their car front the side push them in to the river. The drive and the passanger did not make it out alive unfortunately.

One other alternative. If you don't have, or can't figure out a means to, crack the window, wait till the car fills up with water. Once the water inside the car reaches over the door, the pressure is equalized and you can get out.

Pray you can unbuckle everyone & get to your spare tire fast enough bc a spare tire can support a few people & keep you floating. That's my best bet as I can't swim either. My spare tire is just right in my trunk instead of under the little floor flap

I wish they had addressed what to do if you don’t get the windows down in time…. Fail. If you don’t get the windows down in time, the door will be almost impossible to open until the cabin completely fills with water and the pressure equalizes. Move to the back of the car and breathe the air as long as possible. By the time you can’t breath anymore, it will be some moments before the pressure fully equalizes and you can open the door. Good luck.
