Aint going to lie. I was really hoping for Denji & Power to make top 3. Those two chaos gremlins are absolutely harlarious together. I have never before seen a pair of lunatics sharing the same brand of crazy so perfectly. And they really helped each other to grow as people. Denji gave up his wish to look after Power while she was suffering from PTSD, and Power gave her life to save Denji. These two were the ideal of friendship. I know that I'm overlooking Aki in all of this, but if we're limiting ourselves to just one-on-one friendships, then I have to advocate for Denji & Power -- The Devilish Duo.

You should consider doing best father son type relationships in media. You have a ton of options: Trucks/Future Gohan, Fushiguro/Gojo, Grandpa Gohan/Goku, Kaneki/Arima, Bam/Jinsung Ha, Starlord/Yondu, Guy/Lee, Jiraya/Naruto. You know the relationships where a guy isn't your dad, but he's your daddy. It's similar to that student master relationship, but a little closer I think. I think you could have a field day with that one

I feel like you missed at least one honorable mention of Spike and Jett from Cowboy Bebop. The juxtaposition of their stories is truly fascinating. While Bebop is mostly about trying to catch the bounty of the week its also really intriguing to see how they came together. Spike being the former head hit man of the syndicate and Jet being a police officer being on two opposing sides but being so broken from being unable to move on from their pasts is comforting in a way that I wouldn't have predicted. Spike over Julia who was supposed to meet him and run away together sold him out in order to save both of their lives while Jett had his wife that left him. The way that Jett carries around that old school pocket watched that stopped to show that time stopped for him and the line where Spike says that he doesn't know if he is really alive since that fateful night. Then when the story does progress from just the bounty of the week you can see that Jett and Spike truly care for each other. Jett asking Spike if he was going there to die and Spike telling Jett that he was going there to see if he was actually alive. Jett understanding having to confront his past since he had already done so with his wife previously. You can see throughout the episode Spike just going through the entire organization and Jett juxtaposed on the ship knowing that his closest friend is on a suicide mission and how it will end up. It really is a story that kinda sticks with you. There is a reason that it is one of the greats even if it is a classic. On a side note the OST for Bebop fucking banger too. I know that has nothing to do with the friendship but the music fucking slaps and is probably one of my personal favorite OST's.

Ban actually did try to kill Meliodas because he thought it would bring Elaine back (grossly oversimplified explanation). But, Meliodas fought him and made him realize that killing him wouldn't bring Elaine back. It's actually a big part of what makes them such a good friendship. Meliodas NEVER holds it against him but Ban takes forever to forgive himself. It even comes back in the opposite way after Meliodas is giving in to his demon side because now Ban fights him to try and knock some sense into him.

Personally, my favorite friendship is Natsu and Gray. Pretty much the whole rivals turned to friends and friends still rivals. They'd do pretty much anything for each other and I love the dynamic they have. This was still a VALID list!

I really didn't like Naruto and Sasuke's friendship. Throughout Shippuden kinda felt like not only was Naruto trying to bring him back to the village, but he was also forcing him to be his friend. Like Sasuke kept trying to push him away and saying that he didn't like him anymore and Naruto was kind of being like "nope, I don't care, we're friends, you don't get to have any say in this, we have a bond and that's that, I know best."

Another great one is Sunakawa and and Gouda from My Love Story. I know it's not the type of anime you usually talk about, but when I first saw the anime when it came out in 2015, it was so heartwarming. Sunakawa is attractive enough that tons of women are into him. That includers Rinko at first, however he decides to step aside and allow Gouda, his childhood friend, whose considerably less popular, to pursue Rinko instead, and the two became a couple. He's the ultimate wing man.

I was just thinking about this video concept yesterday! I’d say the best friend in anime is early Luffy. (Maybe late Luffy too, not caught up) Right now, I’m having an issue where all my friends like/respect me too much. Nobody will help me become a better person, and they feel put down when I try to help them become better. Luffy is the kind of straight-up G who will sacrifice his friendship to help a friend. Kobe says it’s his dream to become a marine? Luffy doesn’t act supportive the way people do irl. He says you’re too much of a coward, and then helps Kobe become the kind of person he needs to be in order to reach that dream. Without that nudge, where would Kobe be now? Nami has an awful home/family life? Not Luffy’s business. He couldn’t fight her battle until she was ready to come around/ask for his help. Otherwise she wouldn’t be able to change/grow. I was really hoping to see Vash and Wolfwood from Trigun on here. While the Stampede remake hasn’t gone into their friendship much yet, their friendship in the OG anime and manga is one of the best I’ve ever seen. Either way I really liked your list, and absolutely no one is surprised that Gon and Killua are number 1. Even if you have bias they still deserve the number 1 spot.

Great list, largely agree! But, to me, it's actually criminal to forget Miria & Isaac from Baccano!, at least as an honorable mention. I know that canonically they're referred to briefly as "lovers" once, but there's not even a hint of romance between them shown. Just as some of these characters are friends first and rivals second, they're most certainly friends first & lovers second (if at all). They're too precious & entertaining to not get a mention one way or another, imo. Kiruko & Maru from Tengoku Daimakyō may have deserved an honorable mention as well, but not a place in the top 10--due to less screen-time than the rest of the top 10 & spoiler-related reasons. Personally, I'd honorably mention Vash & Wolfwood as well, though "friends" may be somewhat of a stretch for them. Thought of Mugen & Jin as well, but they're definitely rivals 😂 Fun topic tho, thanks for the vid!

This is probably bait, but eh, I'll bite. I have to disagree with you there, at least in part. Gundam, at least from how I've always gathered, is about how conflict ruins lives and violence begets violence. But the one congruent amongst almost all gundam series is that the only thing that keeps people sane in the horrors of war is friendship and love. Amuro/Frau, Amuro and Quattro, Kamille and Fa(yes they fall in love later, but i mean in the confines of zeta), Judau and Beecha, Mika and Orga, and finally Suletta and Miorine(again yes they fall in love in the end but their relationship is initially based on how much they care about each other.) Hell, Mikas tragic end comes from the fact that he loses Orga and gives in to his inner monster, Lupus Rex is the shape that monster takes. So tldr I guess it *is* about the violence and tragedy of war. It's also equally about souls finding little moments of peace in that violence and relying upon each other.

The friendships aren’t hugely fleshed out, although the closest is Char and Amuro, as they actually seem to have more of a friendship relationship than Amuro and say Hayato. I hope that makes sense. But yeah you do have a point. And I was mainly referring to UC, the other series are way more focused on friendship like with Gundam SEED, IBO and Witch from Mercury.

Idk where but Goten and Trunks, but they’re an honorable mention imo, mainly since they’re practically always drawn together after the tournament introducing Babbidi. Although I don’t begrudge it, since Luffy has a bigger friend pool then most manga have characters, I think Naruto has a good pool to consider as well with the Konoha 13. With Haikyuu!! I also want to mention Asashi and Nishinoya, but I’m also in the camp of, “oh they definitely are closeted lovers.” Then also, another “cheating but I don’t care” is the Elric Brothers.

If I was going to pick a strawhat to make this list it would be Zoro and Luffy. It becomes more apparent in Wano and Egghead with their friendship and the respect they have for each other. But I understand why not put any of them on.
