The stakes are even too high to decline it too.If they had declined a record that they KNOW was valid, they would been declining the first ever recorded sub 14 run AND the first world record in months done without f3. It would be so much to take away on a technicality

i mean, theres definitely a moral dilemma present. the mods clearly set a rule that runs with fabric api would NOT be accepted. now, they are accepting a run that used fabric api. its undeniably unfair because if this exact same situation happened to a less established runner, their record would NOT be counted. is it fair for the rules to apply differently to different speedrunners? i’d argue no. however, this run clearly is legit and is extremely impressive- i’m just saying its naive to say theres no moral conflict here

Two things from Illumina's reaction to his own video, 9:08 he starts to break that block because he says that the breaking animation is directional, so that way he knows which quadrant he wants to go towards. 9:50 I believe he says he sees the bastion just before he starts fighting the blazes, when he spins around there

I dunno, I think e-strats have a slight chance of corrupting our purist fave. He actually turned on F3 a couple times in Friday's stream (at the end of already dead runs) to see if there were bastions nearby that he had missed. It's too much fun! Being Illumina, his scanning is already faster than half the top 10, too. (All meant positively; I love the guy and could not care less what strategies he decides to play with.)

A couple comments/corrections: Illumina does actually have a method for figuring out directions are N/S/E/W, which helps him know where the quadrants are. Given one structure and your orientation you will know where else to check. You can see him figuring out his orientation when he enters the nether - he attempts to break a block but then cancels. This is on purpose because he is watching the block breaking animation, which is always oriented in a particular way. Secondly, when he is throwing his eyes, he is not double checking that he is still on the right angle (as you say around 12:50) - he is making sure that the stronghold hasn't "snapped" onto the nearby coast. Basically, during generation the stronghold tries not to generate in the ocean and looks around a 200-block area trying to find land to generate underneath. So as he is going past the coast there is a chance he is on top of the stronghold

Illumina does know where quadrants are the basalt block that he hit with his pick let him know about what quadrant is what quadrant because when you break a block the crumbs can let you know what direction is what direction or cords

No! thats not how quartrant work! The Quardrant are essentially the area Around 0,0. If he never used F3, there's no way of knowing if he's in the ++ or - - or any quadrant or the position he currently is in. What you are trying to say is the Cardinal DIRECTIONS (which is N W S E or x+ x- z+ z-)

No that is how quadrants work guys. No matter where you are the cardinal directions can guide you to where each quadrant is. Illumina says that’s why he is using the block creaking animation in his own analysis of this run.

@@kyleseidel6832 this is why the school system needs to make sure students understands that concept correctly, not just make them pass. Quadrant is an Area around a certain coordinates, if you don't know what your exact coordinate is, you never know which quadrant you are, and if you don't know which quadrant you are, you don't know if you are walking what quadrant either. But what you can have a chance (just 50%) of walking across any 2 quadrant from walking in a certain direction (say if you walk parallel the x axis and you spawn in x- z-, you can walk to the x+ z- quadrant IF you walk the x+ direction) tl;dr You cant know the quadrants if you don't even know your position

@@zForce4 You’re still wrong. Yes you can’t know exactly everything you can know with f3, but NW NE SE SW always point towards a specific quadrant. You won’t be centered unless you know your origin, but if you continue in one of those directions long enough you are guaranteed to reach the associated quadrant. In minecraft you can gauge distance based on travel time and such so you can guess at the origin and how long you would be interested in traveling in each direction to check a specific quadrant. And I’m a math minor btw I do understand how quadrants work lol.

That's still called blind travel; it is even for people who do know their coordinates. It's "blind" because you have no real idea of the location of the stronghold when you do it. This is in contrast to educated travel, where a runner returns through their original portal, throws a single eye, and then returns to the nether to travel a given distance in the direction of the stronghold before portaling out. In that case they know the proper direction, if still not exactly the distance. Educated travel is rarely used due in part to the fact that a lucky blind will almost always be faster than the best possible educated.

At 12:50 you say he's doubting his angle, but that's not actually correct. Strongholds often generate under coasts, which is why he checked when he first got into his boat and why he checked again when he passed that area of land. This is because strongholds don't like to generate under oceans or swamps. If one attempts to generate under an ocean but there's a different biome within 13 chunks (~200 blocks), it will "snap" to that biome instead, meaning they often generate under islands or coastlines. If they don't find land within 200 blocks then they just generate in the ocean where they were originally placed.
