@soilmanted2 жыл бұрын
Mine never had a problem producing enough heat. It actually warmed the cabin faster and hotter than any other car. Too many mechanics do not attach the air hoses correctly and adjust the flaps correctly. There is nothing wrong with the design of the heating system. The same fan that cools the engine blows monsterous amounts of hot air into the cabin, after it passes over the engine, and though the heat exchangers wrapped around the exhaust pipes, where the air is heated even more before it blows almost painfully hot into the passenger cabin. If a paper hose is missing, if the flaps at the end of the heat exchangers are not adjusted properly, if the flaps are not lubricated maybe once every few year, they may get stuck in the closed position, and heat won't get into the cabin. Very easy repair. The flaps could use a drop of oil in 1 or 2 places. The heat exchangers rust through after about 150,000 miles (240.000 klilometers) and some of the hot air will not get to the cabin. They can be easily replaced, or even patched up. Even with small leaks in the heat exchangers, the cabin still gets very hot. My van did not have enough power, but the beetle had plenty. No problem getting onto limited access highways or passing slow-moving traffic. And car would go 80 mph for 10 hours without overheating. Van would only go 65. The valves needed adjustment once every 6,000 miles I think it was. Spark plugs needed replacement I think at 12,000.. Timing needed adjustment every 6000 because car had distributor points which changed the timing as they wore down. Easy jobs to do but you had to do them. Carburetor needed adjustment - air-fuel mixture and idle speed, that was it. Jets needed to be cleaned out with compressed air and every 30,000 miles or so you would need to replace the diaphragm that pumped in extra fuel when accelerating. If you adjusted the mixture correctly the engine and fuel pre-heating tube would not get carboned up, ever. However the engine would only last 100,000 miles before the number three cylinder would suck a valve. Exhaust valve would stretch, break, and get sucked into the cylinder. It would damage the piston, cylinder, and connecting rod. But you would be warned before that happened when adjusting the valves, as you would see the valve lash starting to get smaller instead of larger. If you took off the heads soon after you saw the lash shrinking, you could recondition the heads and the engine would not have any expensive broken parts that needed replacement. You could simply replace the exhaust valves, resurface the valve seats and the intake valves, adjust everything, and you would be good to go.

A few quick comments: VW was offered for free by the British to any major auto firm that wanted it; no takers. Unlike other companies, the Allies completely changed the company from its WW2 roots. My friend's 1968 Beetle was by far the best made car I've ever seen, and that includes RR and MBenz. The basic VW design was dreadful, unsafe, with an awful highway boom sound with the windows down, and no A/C to allow closing the windows. But, it was made exquisitely and was easily repaired.

I liked how dispite its age VW just modernized it enough to keep improving it without drastically changing anything. I wonder what improvements would have been added in the 20 years since 2003 if production hadn't ended. More safety tech features maybe, basic digital dials/displays... A simple easy to use touch screen on the dash , electric Windows, romote central locking, LED lights etc. Little things like that to keep it up to date while maintaining its charm.

Power windows are unreliable and almost everything you mentioned, your ideas would have ruined the car. The more gadgets the more trouble and especially when the car gets some age on it. It's surprising that they didn't at least change the window fittings so they could caulk the glass in place instead of messing with rubber gaskets. Nothing wrong with hard work. Jobs then....... Unemployment now! I think the people who build the cars give it it's soul. That is why new cars are soulless.

When we were young we had nicknames for our cars: a beat up Comet was called The White Weasel and if you mashed on the accelerator clouds of oily smoke were blasted from the exhaust pipe - just the thing to discourage those who liked of follow too close. The "Banana Boat" took up two parking spaces and one day the car body almost sank to the pavement. My VW was called "The Fuhrer's Revenge"!

Here in the Philippines, we have a joke about the Beetle: Some Random Guy: Whooooaaaa Somebody Stole the engine! Me: Don't panic, I have a spare at back.

If this first film was from 1974, this shows how advanced the production line has gotten since then. Basically no robotics back then at all, compared to being all robotics today.

When cars were still cheap and good.. Now it takes you forever to pay off a car..
@cessealbeach3 жыл бұрын
True! These cars were death traps, most cars prior 1990, you are paying a premium for safety
@bextar63653 жыл бұрын
@Alex N And standard safety features included.
@watershed443 жыл бұрын
@@cessealbeach How did people survive those death traps back then...the fact is most did. As far as durability these old beetles were the best, easy and cheap to repair and simple enough that any mildly hands on owner could do it. Todays overly complex turd boxes, nope, and it will cost you a fortune to even maintain them much less repair them with all the electronic crap in them. Bottom line is I don't want to pay for that extra safety.

@Alex N actually no...ABS was a $3,000 option when introduced in a Benz, it now costs VW $123 to install in all vehicles, read the statement years ago, by Vw execs...cars are much more efficient and durable, engines are much more precisely machined and assembled, as is the entire car, fit and finish, and better materials, that don't fade and crack in the sun in 3 years...much better now
@cengeb3 жыл бұрын
@@null643 extremely durable...less maintenance...lighter materials...much more efficient...coatings and paints lasts much longer...2.0l turbo close to 300 hp on my flawless 2019 golf r..36,000 flawless Mike's fun fun fun not one issue change oil at 10k intervals..couple of air fikters...fantastic..reliable...fun maintenance freenew version now 320 hp..with better drive system from haldex to an audi type torque vectiring...they are much superior to old crap...super reliable...fantastic handling..tires last much longer with fantastic grip...continental extreme contact dws 6...fantastic in rain dry and snow...old cars are grossly inferior in all aspects..my previous gtis where also great current golf r is best one yet

For the people that work in this industry, I hope that you love your robots that have taken over allot of the work that most been really hard and took allot of your body. Ps what a fantastic video from back in the days 💙

I can only imagine the repetitive motion injuries these workers sustained having to lift whole car bodies into place. The spot welding alone would kill your wrists

Who cares? It is the job they chose.

@Milford Civic That kind of thinking is what destroyed the western work ethic. Now no one in our western countries wants to do hard work.
