Great review. Interesting and informative. I think, peated Whiskies can be great with 10 or 12 years (Ardbeg 10, Lagavulin 12). Ex-Bourbon and Sherry matured i prefer 15 or 18 years (Glen Scotia 15, Glendronach 18). They often have a good balance between the cask influence and the spirit and are not too expensive. Cheers mate!

Enjoyed the video. I haven’t got to play with enough old whiskies to be able to claim that older whiskies (over 18 years) “are” or “are not” better (obviously company policies play a huge role). But I agree, there is something about 18 year old whiskies that really gets me too... There is obviously the psychological side that gets us pumped for this whisky that was being distilled when we were in our youth... But there are softer sides that come out at 18 (where 15 and 16 were still fighting to get out of the heaviness of a fresh barrel). 12 to 16 is good, but I am on the same page as you.... I’ve never been disappointed in an 18 year scotch... maybe just less impressed or thought it was... a little over priced. Though I’m sure there are plenty of 18 year whiskies left alone. Slainte

I just rewatch the video to refresh my memory, never had that one, but yesterday my friend showed up with the delayed birthday gift and he had 18 year old. I was always intrigued to try it now I definitely looking forward trying it. What makes it interesting he's never whiskey drinker, I was kind of shockingly surprised , first I said thank you, and then I just asked who advise him to get that one. I will definitely stop by in that liquor store.))))

Good review! I love the 12 and it has been a great value-though here in NH price has recently jumped from $40 to $55. Just sprung for the 24 but have yet to try. Glad to know about the 18 if I ever happen upon it. Haven’t tried the peated ones yet. Always a bit wary of the NAS thing.

I have only had 14yr old as my oldest whiskey so far so I can't speak to a sweet spot. But I have a bunch of 10-14s that are excellent. I don't spend much more than $60-75 per bottle normally. My first $100ish bottle I am eyeing is Glendronach 8 CS of all things lol.

Just rewatched this. Since I wrote that last comment, I’ve tried and loved the 24. Then Irene Tan at Canterbury Liquors/WhiskyMentors turned me on to the 18. I slightly prefer the 24, but the 18 provides much better bang for the buck. Have you been to Irene’s store in CT? If not, I’d happily take you on a road trip sometime (I’m in NH). It is a great experience. Anyway…fun to have a sip tonight and revisit this review. Thanks.

anCnoc is a pretty decent whisky and totally worth the money as opposed to some overhyped whiskies! Their 18 yr old expression is a value buy for sure ... and the 24 yr old is even better but harder to find!

My sweet spot is dictated by cask size and the activity level of said cask. However, almost no distilleries are forthcoming with age statements, let alone cask information. Unless we're talking about independent bottlers, of course.

18 year old scotch whisky is hit or miss for me. When you include the taxes, the cost is typically around or exceeding $200 CAD, or about $150 USD. Add to that the fact that I find about half of them to be not worth the money, I much prefer 12s that cost half the price or 15s that cost 2/3 the price, and rarely disappoint... It's very rare that I buy a scotch older than 18 years, but at 20 years of age there are several Canadian whiskies that begin to shine.

I paid almost $140 for this. I think it’s obvious I overpaid. That said, I had never seen it in Florida so I just paid it while pinching my nose. Balancing out the purchase was what I believe was a very cheaply priced Arran 18 for $80. Haven’t opened either, and I’m tempted to take back the Ancnoc to exchange it for another Arran 18 and maybe a $60 bottle but your review intrigues me enough I might just keep it. Any suggestions ?

I just found this for $125 so I’ll be getting it as 18 year old Scotch pricing is getting out of hand. For me the sweet spot for age is 12-15 years.

Good value for a good whisky. Just got another one yesterday for 79 Euros. Just one thing: An Cnoc in English isn't pronounced as they say on their bottle "A Nok". It's pronounced "An Krok", you could say "An Knok" (borderline) but never "A Nok". Why? It's gaelic. They should have explained it on the bottle when the already bother to tell you how to pronounce it properly. It's not the fault of the consumer. How should you know as a non-gaelic speaker? However this isn't the language police, just fyi.

Yeah. I bought a bottle of this stuff to try Glenfiddich and a single malt, I couldn't stand it. It's too sweet, has too much caramel and honey in it, and it's lacking the peet/smokey flavor of all the other Scotch Whiskey's like Johnnie Walker and Buchanan's which are two other huge Scottish Whiskey Names. I couldn't find anything that Glenfiddich mixed well with either.
