I read a great idea online a few days ago, that during a down year, like this year, that they should run maybe a mini-series with McGann in the role...as there is so much they can yet do with him (tho it should be done fairly quickly before he physically ages too much past how he looked in 2013)

McGann was great. The ideas however for the joint American-British Dr. Who that was proposed at the time, not so great. The movie alone was devisive in its bizarre retconning of the established lore. The TV series, named "Bible" would have been far worse, if the changes went ahead. I would love to see McGann do more though.

My first introduction to Doctor Who, like a lot of Americans of my generation, was Tom Baker's Doctor. I really am glad to see that people who got into the series with "new Who" are going back to watch the classic episodes.

I'm from the Tom Baker generation, myself. The 5th, 6th, and 7th Doctor stories simply didn't do much for me, even though the Doctors themselves were pretty good. But I didn't feel electrified until the 8th Doctor came along, because it gave me hope for the future - and I was not disappointed. I fell in love with New Who right away, and these new Doctors brought back the Tom Baker magic.

Ahhh, "my Doctor." Jon Pertwee. The Saturday nights breathlessly awaiting the series, giggling uncontrollably at "Are You Being Served" as a lead in. Hyacinth Bucket, hot tea with honey and sheer Anglophilia. Many, many years. Throughout Tom Baker, then David Tennant. The fun of being different, of being the nut that ENJOYED Public Television (a whole other proposition, here across the pond). You see, "public television" at the time was essentially relegated to school children as "educational". Mr. Rogers, Sesame Street, Electric Company...children's shows. But the real joy, the secret pleasure was Masterpiece Theatre, and Dr. Who.

Lodi, I began w/ the 3erd Dr., then the4th. Tom Baker. is my all time favorite. Dr. Who has not been seen in Puerto Rico since Tom Baker era, so , if I talk of this TV series, no one understands, . They. look at me as if I were. the alien. Except. my brother & niece , who are Dr. Who fans, like. me. We try to keep updated using the net. I'm excited to have a Timelady in the TARDIS. Hope can see her in action soon.

Similar story. Before the reboot, here in Australia, the ABC (our version of the BBC basically) re-ran the entire Classic Who series on TV after the children's programs ended. I don't remember much, as I didn't pay much attention at the time, but I have memories as a 10 or 11 year old seeing "An Unearthly Child" for the first time, the 3rd Doctor and the 4th Doctor.

Nice. I started watching Who in 2008 when Ten was at the helm and I fell in love with it. When I started losing interest around series 6, I looked into Classic Who, starting with the Third Doctor specifically who remains my favorite Doctor to this day. Years later I went back into the current series due to Capaldi after the Classic series developed my preference for grey-haired Doctors. Now I'm happily going through both the old and current series.

Thank you for your excellent and nuanced review of the era that started it all! As an American, I started with Tom Baker. I remember coming home from 4th grade and turning on the TV and seeing this strange, eccentric man with an impossibly long scarf trying to deal with an evil plant collector about to unleash an alien plant upon the Earth. Yep: "Seeds of Doom" was where I began and I've never looked back! My beard is grey, now, and I still adore this series. Thank you, again, for your celebration of this mutually-loved television legend!

Big Finish did other Doctor stories besides 8th Doctor; and I think that they particularly allowed Colin Baker's 6th Doctor to shine as he never was able to in the TV show.
@patchworkfellow4 жыл бұрын
*I mean, the 6th Doctor did have some good TV-moments, they were just made rather sparse. “Attack of the Cybermen” and “The Ultimate Foe” are both good episodes, and I can vouch for “Attack” personally. But Big Finish has definitely given him more brilliance :)*

I totally agree, Paul. "Pyramids" is arguably the best episode of Classic Who. Although, I also agree that "City of Death" is an amazing, nuanced episode that really plays with time travel as a plot-point rather than an excuse to tell a story. And I would be remiss if I didn't recommend to all fans exploring Baker's incredible era, the first appearance of Davros in "Genesis of the Daleks".

Since practically everyone who's seen the original and real Doctor Who says it is better than the now far more popular reboot, and I don't think I've ever met someone who's seen classic who and says it's worse than new who, why not watch it yourself? I think it's pretty stupid to know a bunch of pointless trivia about it if you've never even seen an episode. Now's a better time to than ever before as well, since lost classics like Power of the Daleks and Shada have been fully restored via animation, and you can watch the entire classic catalogue from An Unearthly Child to Survival for just $10/month on BritBox (though in reality it'd probably take you a year or two to watch all of them, but still not bad compared to what it'd cost to buy all the DVD's.)
@julieeverett74425 жыл бұрын
thats like skim reading a book and saying you know all about it is rather egotistical! Take a look at the series, except for one and two ALL their stories are available, and between them there are 17 stories missing from the first two. That's 147 stories, you really think you know so much!!! There are some really great ones too.

It's great to see a video like this which may convince new fans to watch the original series. It would be a shame to see it forgotten. The classic era has some amazing stories and I'm glad there are videos like this to act as an educational tool with the Doctor Who website become useless in terms of classic Who which is how I was introduced to classic Who.
@pasquino07335 жыл бұрын
Gonna be a heretic here. There was no Dr Who after McCoy and Aldred walked off in Survival. Classic Who was intelligent, while being quirky. New Who is comparatively vacous. Find the five best dialogues in the classic series and 5 of your ‘best’ in the new. Classic is made for people who enjoy and appreciate language. Its the same as remakes of Star Wars, Superman post C Reeve etc Who now, goes with a generation who sticks a thousand likes in front of someones boutique breakfast cereal...

I grew up with Doctor Who in my childhood, and at the time it was Ten who was the doctor, which set the definiton of "doctor" to me, but then I just got bored of it bc i was a child. 8 years later, about a month or so ago, I went back to doctor who for literally no reason, but this time I went watching classic who. I started with Two (idk why i skipped one), which was probably my favourite doctor because he was very very similar to Ten (which I think its bc dave tennant studied classic who to do his character) and I really just loved his energy overall. I nearly finished two now and I can't wait for three bc from what i saw pertwee was one of the best doctors.

I have to say I love all the doctors. They all bring something new to the table. However I would say my doctor is Sylvester McCoy the Seventh doctor.. The dark chess player. He could put the feeling of terror into someone pointing a gun to his head.. And was the best doctor to encounter Davros.. As Davros begged in fear "have pity on me.. " the seventh doctor just replied with disgust "I have pity for you.. Goodbye Davros it hasn't been pleasant. " and then his and Ace relationshi was the best of doctor who. He was Te father figure to her and always loved when he'd ask "you didn't happen to disobey me and bring nito 9 with you?" ACE would look so innocent "of course not I'm a good girl, I do what I'm told.. " the doctor would just smile "good hand some over. " lol I would love to see more of this doctor. Thank goodness we have big finish. I hope to meet Mr. McCoy one day and tell him just how much he means to me.

Great video explaining about classic Dr. Who. I've been watching the classic series ever since I can remember back in the early 90s on the American public television station PBS as they were repeating many of the classic episodes. My first 2 Doctors were Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, both I really liked, especially Tom Baker. In the early 2000s, I was introduced to William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton when I started to buy some of the older episodes on video and DVD. The first Patrick Troughton episode I seen was "The Tomb of the Cybermen", not only a really good story, but a really good Doctor, a Doctor that I liked just as much as Tom Baker. Then came new Who, which I really liked as well. From a classic Doctor Who fan from the get go, I can say well done, you've really done your homework on this show.

You seem to be confused over the definition of episode over serial. One minute you're distinguishing stories, while listing an episode count, then you're referring to individual serials as an episode. A collection of episodes is a serial. Original Doctor Who was made up of serials, not episodes. The seasons were made up of serials, the serials were made up of episodes.

The original show is definitely harder to get into if you don't appreciate the stilted effects, creepy music, and slow pace of those early 60s/70s stories. Thankfully, I really loved all these details. The First Doctor has a good personality but his stories are not very good at all. There are a few that stand out, but his stories are all history based for the most part and all follow the same sort of structure. The Second Doctor is pretty fun, but most of his stories are lost, and while the animated recreations are nice, I can't get into them. The Third Doctor is what I usually recommend new classic fans to start. Not only is it the first in color, but it's easy to get into since the first few stories take place on Earth. Now The FOURTH Doctor is where things get interesting. The 1974-1977 years of the Fourth Doctor are some of the best in all of Doctor Who, and has someone who thinks DW should lean into the horror aspect, stories like The Ark In Space satisfy me endlessly. Pete Davidson had some interesting stories but for me personally I really don't like the direction of Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy. They are to me the weakest doctors the show has had.

William Morgan It's caught in that time eddy, yes. Strictly speaking it's a one-off thing with no direct link to the original ongoing run, but it's generally classed as the cut-off point, given that it was produced in the 20th century, it starts with McCoy as a link to the classic series, and its logo was for over 20 years used as an umbrella brand for classic Who. Basically, it's part of the "Classic Who" brand, as a matter of practice. So it's fair enough to lump it all together, for the sake of discussion. But it would be sensible to stress the oddness of its fit.

Classic Doctor Who is simply the Golden Age of the show. And the 1996 film is not part of Classic Doctor Who but the first unsuccessful attempt to revive the show. And Classic Doctor Who is not a different series, New Doctor is not a relaunch but a continuation. During the screen hiatus, Doctor Who published in other media such as books and audios, so there isn't actually a gap.

Nikioko well McGann is pretty much classed as a classic Doctor now so I guess it counts now

I’m not devoted to DrWho but I do like the show. How do these “ Dr’s “ ( the “ War Dr.” ) case in point fit into the succession of Dr.s ? Or the one time Dr. from that movie ?

Just a clarification: When you say that much of Troughton's time as the Doctor has been lost, this is not entirely accurate. While the visual component is missing quite a lot, the audio still exists, and has been released on a series of discs with linking narration by such as Anneke Wills (Polly), Frazer Hines (Jamie), etc. (The same is true of the missing Hartnell episodes, such as much of the third season, often narrated by William Russell (Ian) or Carole Ann Ford (Susan).) There are also reconstructions of these episodes out there, if you can find them. Some have been released on DVD, but most have been done by fans of the program. Some have used animation, while others have blended telesnaps with the remaining footage and the audio to recapture, as much as possible, what these original episodes were like. I recommend those done by "Loose Cannon" as being some of the best; some of these actually have included opening and closing videos featuring interviews with people involved in the particular story, putting much of this in context, and adding elements which may help the viewer to further envision the originals. Having gone through all this, I think those who are not absolutely wedded to the new era exclusively will find much that is well worth their time; speaking as someone who loves both the classic and new Who, I am very glad to see further recognition of the history of the program, and hope others will find their own favorites therein.

all 17 missing STORIES are on audio, and are available to listen to, maybe not quite the same but there! I can sum up the difference between classic who and new who in two words. Time War, the early doctors never took part! All are younger and more "innocent" if such a word can be used, it doesnt mean they cant be serious, or deadly, they can. But they dont carry the burden of being the last of their race. Though you do get to see the first shots!

I was born at the start of new who (9th doctor) and then I started watching the show on the 11ths time but 10 is my doctor but I went back and I liked the second doctor the third doctor and 5th doctor and 8th doctor but 10 is still my doctor
Go check again who was the longest running Dr. it wasn't Tom Baker and he didn't start the jelly babies either that was Patrick Troughton. The rest was quite good though.
@julieeverett74424 жыл бұрын
longest running on tv is Tom Baker, longest continuous running is actually Sylvester Mc Coy he went from 86/89 to 96 to 99 when big finish started. 5th and 6th joined him in big finish, the first ever story was a 5th/6th/7th cross over. 8th joined early 2000's and 4th came in in 2006! the classic era doctors have been going over 20 years and are STILL going. 10th joined in 2013 and has 9 stories of his own, and chris joins 2021

well Masterplan was only 13 episodes out of 45 episodes and finished up half way through the series so not really. If anything season 9 with the Doctor battling the Master could be considered the first with a season long arc.
@julieeverett74425 жыл бұрын
still only 12 stories! Master plan was one story with 12 parts. The key to time was SIX stories of 4-6 parts each! roughly THIRTY episodes so no season nine is NOT the first!

Unfortunately you can't. Some people do pirate them onto other video websites but it's still illegal. If you really want to do it legally, buy the DVDs.

This video is a good effort, and I totally get where you were going with it, but there’s some really basic stuff here that you’ve missed the mark with, all of it simple enough to research (plus I kinda would’ve expected someone who knew enough to want to make a vid like this would just know all of this stuff already) - e.g. it’s “Tegan” not “Teegan”, “Vislor Turlough” was known as “Turlough” not “Vislor”, and Sara Kingdom’s name is pronounced just like Sarah-Jane’s, not with a long ‘a’. You also reference the 5th Doctor’s era as being “known as the crowded TARDIS” - I don’t mean to sound overly contrary, but as a Who fan since 1982 I can put my hand on my heart and say that I’ve never once heard anyone ever call it that. Obviously it’s understood that *part* of Davison’s era featured a couple more companions than were probably needed, but it was hardly a “constant stream” of them. And what’s with the comment early on in the video about “Doctor Who’s rich past, which not many even realized had happened”? Who exactly is this “not many” of whom you speak? Even today, particularly in the UK, I’d be very surprised if the number of people who were at least aware of said “rich past” were outnumbered by those who believed it was a slick new never-before-seen Sci-Fi concept that debuted in 2005. Also, while most of your recommendations are really solid the way you describe them is a bit weird and potentially confusing - e.g., you name “City Of Death”, then reference it as “Series 17, Episode 2” - “City Of Death” was the second story of Season 17, not the second episode. “Destiny Of The Daleks” Part 2 was the second episode of Season 17 (remember in the old days they were typically referred to as seasons, not series). “City Of Death” is actually episodes 5-8 of Season 17. Or were you actually recommending only the second episode of “City Of Death”? I also recommend you do some research around the correct pronunciation of words like “admirably” and “stalwart” if you ever wish to use them again in further videos. All feedback provided sincerely and with good intentions, definitely not just having a go! :)

it can be split up by the decades then because they are all quite different yet still the same in their story telling. We have the 60's in black and white, more purely historical stories and introducing of concepts (the sonic screwdriver, regeneration and the concept it can, sort of, be controlled, the intro of the time lords all started in the 60's) the 70's the golden age of doctor who 3rd and 4th first time in colour the first time its shown the doctor has two hearts the phrase "Gallifrey in the constalltion (sp?) of Casterbrous, the 12 regeneration 13 lives limit all came in the 70's. the 80's the disco era, the first time each doctor has its own theme, doctors 1-4 theme was almost unchanged through those 17 years the first American companion, 5th lost his sonic. it also introducted the concept in emergencies a new reneration cycle may be granted 6th started having longer episodes per story as a precursor of modern era the intro of Dorothy "Ace" McShane the precursor of the modern companions with 7th. ALL are multi part stories all 158 of them
