Leederville Oval became home to East Perth when it had to move from Perth Oval when it was re developed as Members Equity Stadium for Glory and Force
@BDub2024 Жыл бұрын
Claremont oval basically dropped capacity to 5,000 maximum. Its surrounded with flats now like Waverley. Its a pity they didn't use the Showgrounds next door and then together build something of good quality for multiple sports. But I suppose they still felt that a footy oval in the area was required.

Should look into Perth oval and how historic it is and was the spirit home of the East Perth football club, there was a tree called Charlie chandlers tree and was special as it only ever bloomed when East Perth won the premiership
@BDub2024 Жыл бұрын
Perth Oval was the most historic ground, the most picturesque and the largest (apart from the old Subiaco Oval). Unfortunately, East Perth was forced to leave it and the ground was turned into a soccer and rugby stadium. Currently called Medibank Park. Great pity for footy that they lost their jewell.

Fremantle Oval has a $60million redevelopment in the works, which will see a realignment of the oval to remove the carpark gap between the field and the heritage grandstand. The field did use to be much closer to the stand and it also had a cycling track along the field perimeter. West Perth were the long time original tenants of Leederville Oval but they moved to the northern Perth suburb of Joondalup in 1994. They've since resisted changing their name to Joondalup despite municipal pressure. East Perth played at Perth Oval for 88 nonconservative years before they moved to the vacant Leederville Oval. It was a bittersweet move but Perth Oval was redeveloped into a rectangular stadium for Rugby and Soccer. It still retains the old grandstand on its western wing. It was the prettiest ground in the league with a well proportioned stand and moreton bay figs surrounding the grass embankments. Its still officially called Perth Oval (HBF Park sponsor name) even though it's now a rectangular stadium. Yet in its current configuration, the old grandstands heritage listing has prevented the full completion of the redevelopment. If Perth can secure a National Rugby League team, then it's likely something will be done to remove the stand from the heritage list and build a new western stand with suites. Subiaco spent 96 years at Subiaco Oval. It was the biggest of the WAFL grounds so doubled as the location for interstate representative fixtures of Western Australia, and hosted the WAFL Grand Final each year. The ground was developed ad-hoc between the late 60s to early 2000's and was the home to Perth's 2 AFL clubs till it closed in 2017. Sentiment aside, it was far too big for Subiaco's needs.

The problem with the propsed Freo Oval redevelopment is that it will align directly with the afternoon sun behind the goals: meaning one end will have all players constantly shielding their eyes to see the ball/action.

Arena Joondalup has had a major redevelopment, with a whole new members' grandstand & club WPFC facilities, with a long upstairs balcony and bar room/function centre. This was built in the last half a decade or so.
@BDub2024 Жыл бұрын
Leederville used to fit 25k. On the outer wing the spectator area was double the height (where the recreational centre on the wing is now). Also on the half forward flank you now see an office building which is where the spectator area used to be too. They also resurfaced it about 15 years ago, to make it softer, with clay. But it now means that it gets mud in winter.

You might also reference an article that appeared in USA mag (Sports Illustrated ?) reporting on the road trip by Sydney Metros to Adelaide Giants (by car) and then on to Perth Heat (by plane), was the longest in a domestic league globally at that time. A massive feat for such a shoestring operation.

Actually, Peel Thunder are the newest WAFL team, (controversially) introduced in the second half of the nineties, so they post-date Land Down Under by 15 years or so. Still, good video, and made me realise that the bore water staining I take for granted in my home town is something I've never seen anywhere else in the world.

I'd like to see stadiums of yesteryear in Australia and what is left. For example famous Subiaco oval has not stands left at all. But only the famous gates. Perth Oval (formerly East Perth ground) is a former AFL ground now soccer rugby. Very traditional with massive trees old grand stand and huge heritage listed gates. Claremont Showgrounds used while Claremont was being developed... you got the idea. Even the WACA has had WAFL at very times in the history way back.

Lathlain Park. Lot less capacity now with now outer wing spectator area due to the other ground, plus the Eagles changerooms. Perth wouldn't mind. Costs shared. Better lighting. Perth has been very unsuccessful for a long period. Due to poor junior zone. So the fans have really dropped away sadly.

Fremantle was going to realign the ground to have more carpark on the other side at south east end. So the ground would be closer to the old grand stand. On the other half forward flank is the Dockers premises they build right into the spectator area. So it used to fit up to 20,000 now fits a lot less. You have the old Fremantle Prison on the other side. This was active prison well into the mid 1980s. The wall on the other side would be the prison wall. Heritage listed ground. That's another reason why Dockers left, they would have been trapped in what they could build in the buildings outside the ground precinct. East Freo wanted to return to Freo oval, but Dockers refused to share their facilities even though they don't really use it.

Previous home of Subiaco is (unsurprisingly) Subiaco Oval, well known to eastern staters as home to the Eagles and Dockets until 2018. Previous home of East Perth is Perth Oval, now converted into a rectangular stadium for Perth Glory and the failing WA rugby team. Perth footbal club played at the WACA ground from 1899 until 1958, and again in 1987 and 1988. East Perth also played at the WACA during the 87-88 period, when the WACA were keen to attract Aussie Rules back to the ground following a costly reconstruction project.
@BDub2024 Жыл бұрын
East Frem oval is getting reduced in capacity. Pity they stayed there. They were considering moving to Fremantle in which EF played 60 years ago, but the Freo Dockers (who no longer train at Frem Oval) refused to let EF or SF use their facilities and gym apparently, and much of the ground is heritage listed, so they had to instead rework East Freo oval not far away. EF should have moved more into their area in another suburb. WACA is doing a renovation putting in a pool in part of the spectator area. So dropping to 10k. Ripped down a few of the big grandstands too. I saw that some of the Aust u/18s competition played at the WACA. Needs more footy there.

Subiaco moved out in the early 2000s having co-existed with the Eagles since their formation. Once Perth Stadium was finished, Subiaco Oval was decommissioned and all the stands and light towers torn down. Now it's a large grassed open space next to a new public secondary school.

Arena Joondalup may look and seem good in theory. Unfortunately, being in a high, open location on a windy coast, it is cursed by strong winds during the season, making it uncomfortable for the crowd and difficult for the players. Matches tend to be scrappy affairs. Also, it's in the sticks, yet hosts an historic inner suburban club, Wrst Perth, who chose to relocate there in the 90s. Hence, the club supporters have little love for the venue, and the locals have little connection to the club.
