I worked event security at a concert in LA when David Bowie was touring with Klaus Nomi. Before the show there were a lot of people standing around talking and wanting to get to David Bowie. But, in all the frenzy, I watched Klaus step back, look around and began to talk to the staff that was working there. The caterers, the stage hands, and even me. I found him to be one of the most engaging interesting people to talk to. He was a warm, humble and openly friendly person. He was a very approachable and nice person and I have always remembered him and his friendliness to me and my co-workers with great fondness.

I was a 12 year old odd ball of a tomboy and me and my sis snuck (sp!) down to the basement to watch SNL on this airing. My life changed even before David Bowie finished his performance! I had finally found where I fit in! I'm 53 years old and I have been a hard-wired , die-hard, obsessed in all things Bowie fan since. It took till the internet to find this rare footage. And I learned that was Klaus Nomi, and so I started listening to him and remember the articles of when David Bowie approached him to do this. That was his style Bowie liked with the suit. Klaus has an almost ethereal voice that was of no other. Oh! If I was to have one wish and that would to go back in time of the early 70's and be apart of that whole New York City scene would be just electric! By the time I had learned about Klaus Nomi was too late. Sadly one of the first performers to die of AIDS and even more tragic not giving enough exposure for more to enjoy. So I am like the rest of these good folks saying "Tell me more" WootTootZoot!!!!! Cant leave us hanging!!!

Wish more people would give recognition to Joey Arias, the amazingly talented singer in red, that was best friends with Klaus Nomi. The 2 met Bowie at a dinner event and found out he was a big fan of the both of them as well. This ended up being their only collaboration although they wanted to do more. Joey Arias is still alive and does great shows to this day. He’s such a talent.

This version is so great because of how much Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias added to it. Near the end Klaus belts out vocals so powerful they could’ve overtaken Bowie if he wanted to but he did just enough to elevate the song. And Bowie does his best to keep up with both of them and it makes his performance all the more better for it. It’s probably my favorite version of the song.

At 0:39, when the background vocals first kick in, the harmony and general sound immediately reminded me of Blackstar. Then I realized that they were singing, "I thought you died alone." Dying alone is, of course, is the theme of Blackstar. I think it likely that Bowie was remembering this SNL performance when he wrote Blackstar.

For what it's worth, for a long time NBC kept having the full performance video removed from KZbin, so maybe the editing kept this one up. Personally, I'd love to see the full performance again.

I don't know if you remember the original performance, but the TV director kept doing loving close ups of the one-night-stand session guitarist in his dockers and smug I-fuck-all-the-chicks look on his face. Every guitar break totally took me out of the artistry of the performance. Thankfully, that was largely what the poster edited out with the stock footage.

This is my all-time favorite song from him, and I am strangely attracted to this particular version almost every time I wish to hear it...it's got an extra haunting quality to it, and I love the rawness of the live performance...when the measure of your artistry was still how well you can carry your album to the stage without lipsync or autotune.

I remember my mom let me stay up late to watch this live performance on SNL when I was a kid, and being just mesmerized and blown away. Same effect today, which is a testament to the enduring quality of true art. Thanks for posting here.

Nice memory. I was 12 years old and sleeping over at my best friend’s house. His parents were out and had hired a babysitter. We stayed up late and watched SNL with the babysitter and we were mesmerized, too. All three songs he did that night were spectacular. To this day I don’t think anyone has given a more memorable performance on SNL.

I read in a Klaus Nomi book that some people thought Klaus and David lived together. They obviously did not. One day on the street a guy yelled out to Klaus "how's David?" The ever so brilliant and cheeky Klaus replied "Fine. He's doing the dishes." How I love this man 💕
