Salutes and many thanks to both of you Mr. Aiyar and Thapar, I am a Pakistani born few years after 1971 and I do respect Indians, Hindus and Christians as humans first and then anyone else. Actually I will not even think about religion as a hurdle in our relationship if it was not Modi's policies, so rightly mentioned by you, of anti Pakistan (and anti minority) and going to the extent of false flags to win some elections. I was in Rawalpindi when my son was born and I took him to Dr.Jai Krishan as his first paediatrician because my cousin knew him as a good paediatrician in Islamabad. Similarly when we live abroad we see our Indian friends to be more friendly, understanding and similar in culture than anyone else. Like an Indian man met me and asked where I was from and when I said Rawalpindi, he quickly related and said I know Shoaib Akhtar, the Rawalpindi express from there!! So finally I hear someone influential other than common Indian people who also want to be friends with Pakistan and are expressing their feelings. Actually Mr. M.A. Jinnah himself once mentioned that he wants Pakistan and India to be friends like US and Canada. How nice would it be if someone like Mr. Kejriwal (CM), who wants all good for all humans, is PM in India. I think Imran Khan has had discussions with him for advice about system improvement and he gave useful tips to him too. Thanks again for telling your story, your book, being bold and defiant as well as speaking up about this issue. Best wishes!

As a Pakistani, Mani Shankar Aiyar ji seems like a remarkable man. His solution of India doing a "good will blitzkrieg" seems very idealistic though. He's right, Pakistanis would respond favourably to this. *But*, it seems very unlikely that the Hindutva government would be able to stomach something like this. Not only do they say "go to Pakistan" to Indian Muslims, there's a great deal of "gear wapsi" targeted at Christians and every other minority too. Here's hoping people like Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar ji get to make decisions about the future of our relations.

You were a teacher and had Pakistanis as students. But imagine the other way around. I know of two instances, one involving a close friend and my school classmate. In the late 70s he was in England for higher studies, he had a Pakistani teacher/lecturer/guide what one may call them. The guy was obviously not pleasant, while my friend cleared his writtens well in practicals and viva he would fail him. Since they had to clear eventually I suppose as per system there, he cleared him with absolutely low grades. 40 years down the line, my son, who was in UK had the worst experience with his Pakistani professor. While on holidays, everyone goes home, and so did my son, and he even informed this guy about it as a matter of courtesy and he said yes. While 2 days on holiday in Europe, he summoned him to say he needed to give him a project and he has to be in college, and if he didn't come, he would fail him. He had to break his family holiday and fly back. Only to be told that he can go back on holidays and he will see once college opens! Isn't it sounds absurd ?

+Karanthapar I was born in Karachi and have lived there for 60 years. I’ve been educated there, earned my living, and explored almost every area of the city. I can affirm that the image presented particularly regarding alcohol consumption, is not accurate. Like many other global cities, a small, corrupt, and uncivilized group might be involved in nefarious activities, but this does not define Karachi at all. I observed that both you and your guest seemed to take particular delight in discussing alcohol 32:14. This discussion appeared to overlook the significant harm alcohol can cause, not just physically but also psychologically and socially. Your joyous conversation about alcohol does not reflect its dangerous impact, an impact so significant that so many counties in the USA are legally marked as "dry." In these areas, alcohol consumption is not allowed, demonstrating a widespread understanding of the potential harm it can cause. This restriction is a deliberate measure to mitigate the detrimental effects of alcohol, a concern so paramount that even it was once outlined in the U.S. Constitution during the era of Prohibition. Believe it or not it is one of the main reasons why India is on top on the number of rape cases in the world, and you know this serious issue is highlighted in a BBC documentary, which is unfortunately banned in your country. The documentary delves into the pervasive harm alcohol causes, contributing to significant problems in India. I want to underscore that this alcohol-related issue is not even remotely the case in Karachi. The city does not condone such behavior, and your portrayal unfairly misrepresents the residents’ values and lifestyles. Our welcoming nature and hospitality stem from our Islamic tradition. Karachi is a vibrant city where people of all nationalities, religions, and colors live happily together, much like in New York City. Thank you for your kind words about the hospitality you experienced in Karachi, and I encourage you to consider the broader picture when discussing topics related to alcohol although legally it is allowed for a non-Muslim to buy and consume alcohol but use common sense and science avoid it completely it is not good for you or your society banning BBC might not solve it while banning “Daru” may serve better. Thanks.

Mr Iyer’s interview is most refreshing. My impression, from Indian comments on the Internet is that there are two problems. One is that hate sells well in today’s India. Secondly India’s recent successes have made people very arrogant. I get the sense that Indians feel that they don’t need Pakistan, so why bother to engage. These people don’t realize that both hatred and arrogance are traits that will destroy the rising India. Living in the US , I have always admired the smart and hardworking Indians who were so humble. On the other hand Pakistanis are drowning in their own problems. They are not thinking about India at this time. The situation is bleak. That is why we need sane people like the two of you to come forward. The third largest military is facing the sixth largest . There are nuclear stems on both sides. The current trajectory is towards a disaster.

Dear Hon. Shankar Iiyar. I watched your interview with Mr. Karan Thapar and enjoyed it immensely. I liked your positive attitude towards the common people of Pakistan and how you enjoyed socializing with them. I have lived in the subcontinent for the first 23 years of my life and now been living overseas for over 58 years. You mentioned about a Kerala teacher, Mr Ayer who happened to be in Sindh just after the partition of the subcontinent and stayed in Pakistan. I happened to be one of his students in 1950's and enjoyed his teaching. He was always comparing the students in his native state of Kerala and how smart those students were compared to us. I regularly travel to both of these countries and enjoy the companionship of people like you who want love and friendship instead of narrow nationalistic views.

One credit must go to Congress. During Congress rule India used to have great attraction for Pakistanis due to its secular outlook. All this has changed after modi's arrival as PM.

Mani you really deserve applause. You have your fingers on the pulse of our difficult relationship. A vast majority of Pakistanis never harboured bad feelings for India or Indians but now it seems the Modi sarkar has done so much damage to the goodwill in Pakistan. I think Mani's way forward of 'uninterrupted and uninterruptable dialogue " makes perfect sense to get out of the quagmire. We have much to earn from friendship. It’s extraordinary that, North Indians having more in common - in terms of language and culture - with Pakistanis than any South Indians, it took a South Indian like Aiyyar to understand Pakistan better and look more objectively. 😊

First, north India analogy is older than Pakistan, thus it is so similar, coz culture is 1000s year old n Pak is just 75. Secondly, south is more related to north than pak, coz south kept the culture protected n carried the tradition. The morning routines, rituals, science, n all.
@trex2498 Жыл бұрын
With due respect, no, we don't. May be for language a little bit but a big no for culture. Apart from language south and north, both pray to same gods, celebrate few similar festivals, even our festivals and other things are decided on the basis of same hindu calendar which is based on cycles of phases of moon.We all celebrate similar festivals for arrivals of different seasons , beginning of harvest season ,etc. It's ok if south don't want to associate themselves with the North cultures and considers themselves superior, but at least don't set a wrong narrative that pak and north ind have similar cultures.We tie rakhi to our most distant cousin's too and don't think about marrying them someday.

Mr. Manishakar's experience with Pakistan is not different when an individual interact with Pakistanis in Pakistan, India or any other country. My experience after meeting few Pakistanis in States, Malaysia, Ethiopia, Jammu & Kashmir remained too good to explain. The problem had been crated by Pakistanis rulers / army chiefs, jihadis n militants - across border terrorism just to divert attention of their masses focussing on Kashmir's issue only. Mr. Modi has responded suitably in the manner which was due right from the era of erstwhile government. Please come out of the 'blame - game mindset' now & appreciate the India's standing now at international level!

Iyer is out of sync with the reality. He comes across as naïve and incurable optimist. It is not he Karachi Muslims who run Pakistan but Punjabi Muslims. They are a different breed altogether. They are thoroughly radicalised and are a Global threat. Their antipathy towards Hindus runs very deep and will take generations to overcome. The Modi Government has handled Pakistan excellently. Both China and Pakistan only respects power. Pussy footing and policy of appeasement will not work. What India had earned by talking to Pakistan before 2014.Bomb blast in every corner of country, whethers its train or bus. Militancy in Kashmir.
