If Modi Can’t Handle a Coalition, RSS Could Replace Him With Someone Like Gadkari

In a comprehensive interview to Karan Thapar to analyse and understand the campaign waged by Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party, the outcome of the elections and the future facing Modi, political scientist Christophe Jaffrelot has said that if Modi can’t handle the coalition - and in his 23 years in power he has no experience of doing so - the RSS could replace him with someone like Nitin Gadkari rather than allow the government to fall.
Jaffrelot, Professor of South Asian Politics at Sciences Po in Paris and King’s College in London, says if there is a danger to the government because of Modi’s inability to handle a coalition and his allies, the RSS would be willing to look for a person with the qualities of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Calling the results “a tremor that could have aftershocks”, Jaffrelot said that the “loss of majority is a setback for Narendra Modi precisely because he will have to make concessions and he’s not used to making compromises”.
However, Jaffrelot accepts that the doors of South India are now open to the BJP and, as he put it, “the BJP has become a truly national party this time”. But he points out that to walk through the doors of South India and seek to spread further in the South, the BJP runs the serious risk of diluting the qualities that have underwritten its appeal in the North. To spread deep into the South it would have to cease to be the sort of Hindi-Hindu heartland party it’s presently thought of in the North. This, as he puts it, will create a “dilemma” for the BJP.

It is the profession of political scientists to analyse and unpack how liberal/authoritarian politics work around the world. Liberal democracies in the West are parallel to those of South Korea, Japan, India (at least before Modi) and other nations, in terms of their own liberal democratic tendencies and what's contained in their constitution, with India being a case in point as the world's largest democracy. Prof Jaffrelot has, it seems, been a keen observer/researcher of Indian politics for a few decades and has a considerable insight into India's national politics. It's also very clear from outside of India how Modi has tried to fragment a large chunk of India's laws that were designed to care for all her citizens' rights, etc but are now culturally rendering them extremely fragile. That onslaught against India's largest minority was exacerbated through Modi's 'national' mandate and his in your face authoritarian agenda. Divisive politics, trolling, cancelling, demonising opposition and using judicial powers and Godi medis (even they are "controlled by Modi") to punish her citizens for exercising their fundamental right - these are the hallmarks of a totalitarian state. Recently Arundhati Roy (one example among others) was issued summons of court proceedings against her for doing just that in 2010, voicing her dissent against the ruling party's behaviour(a fundamental right in democracies) towards the inhabitants of Kashmir . People of India really have their work cut out to keep that 'democratic mantle shining',which today looks laclustre at best, and even if Modi is ousted from power, the long standing ideology of the RSS, which has had its ugly and pervading influence for yonks in the minds of Hindu majoritarian citizens, it looks like a full blown threat of dictatorship in India, looms larger than Indian people are willing to admit.

I agree with you brother 💞 it's time to bring Nitten Gadkari to the Centre stage. Enough is enough with Modi. Remember that I don't support the BJP and the NDA Alliance partners. Nitten Gadkari has a technocrat mindset - and that the Indians have a thirst for knowledge based industrialisation - not Hindutva Agenda anymore. U can compare Nitten Gadkari with Atal Bihari Vajpayee - who accomodates the Opposition parties as Nation builders - not as enemies.

Gadkari???? Yes I agree - he should be appointed as PM replacing Modi. That I'm not a BJP supporter till date If there were no elections and no democracy - i would love Gadkari to be the PM of India because as of now - he is the best administrator and governor in the BJP. Modiji can win votes but he is not a good administrator or governor. He can make speeches but policy…No. Amit Shah ….No way. Nirmala Sitharaman - Lackey. Ravi Shankar Prasad - Also a Lackey. (a) As a Member of Parliament for Nagpur - Gadkari has done a lot for his constituency. He has laid out around 1640 Kilometers of Roads with new contractors which have withstood a whole rain season. He has become the First MP to actually have a surplus in his MP Account. (b) As an Able Administrator - he has been an asset during 2014-2019 bringing profit to 21 additional Toll Booths due to his no nonsense toll assessment. Building new roads. Starting the Motel Program to attract additional Highway fares. Even with Waterways his Ganga Extension Project has been a huge success. (c) As a person - Gadkari was the first person to openly support Mallya and claim that a person who has done business for 30 years honestly cannot suddenly become a criminal. Gadkari is reasonable and understands that some corruption is inevitable and the complete picture is vital before conclusions can be made. He would be a good person to simulate the economy - much better than any of todays stooges. However i think perhaps Mr Shah is aware of these abilities which is why Mr Gadkari has been heavily sidelined during the 2019 innings of the NDA. His Traffic policy has been his only failure but perhaps the Ruling Govt wanted it to fail just to keep him on the sidelines. Perhaps in 2024 - he wont even be given a seat and may be made the next Vice President of India. RSS Hqrs Nagpur should find ways to install Nitten Gadkari as PM.

Don't worry , he will handle over the reins in consultations with the RSS that most hate for no reasons, to some one competent and of guts such as Dr Jaishankar or Nitin or even Yogi once he is 75-77 yrs.

@@ashutoshsharma9532 Brother, Stalin studied at the Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School. He completed a pre-university course at Vivekananda College, and obtained a history degree from Presidency College, Chennai of University of Madras in 1973. Stalin was conferred an Honorary Doctorate by Anna University on 1 August 2009. And that I also want to remind that the DMK Alliance partners won all the 40 seats contested including Pondicherry U.T And that Modi was trailing in the first four rounds and won with a low margin than in 2019 election And Sharmaji M. Karunanidhi never lost an election and he was elected 13 times for Assembly elections. And that never underestimate the prowess of the Tamils. The most industrialised state in the country next to Maharashtra having more than 1200 Engineering college and out of 10 lakh engineering students in India per year, 2 .5 lakh students are from Tamil. And that not to forget India Today a pro-BJP Media Group declared that Tamil Nadu was the No 1 State on all parameters, some time back. I think u have forgotten to bring to the centre stage of the Faizabad election defeat where Lord Rama stands tall in my mind but not with the BJP.

It was apparent that Bhagwat aimed his remarks at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose coarse Islamophobhia and uncouth canvassing generated great controversy, diverting attention from the more ideological issues of the Sangh parivar. Modi used pejorative references like “those who have more children” and “infiltrators” for Muslims, while also causing much bitterness over his repeated use of terms like “mujra”, or “mangalsutra” and “buffalo thieves” for the opposition alliance. In one instance, he even ascribed impiety to “mutton eating” to attack an opposition leader. The RSS maintained a stoic silence during the campaign, even as reports emerged that its pracharaks showed little excitement to mobilise voters. Observers say that RSS workers must have sensed an anti-incumbency mood against the Modi government - and so chose not to put themselves in the line of fire. So if Modi has any shame on him for his vulgar speech against the Muslims, he should quit his PM post.

Who is this RSS? Seriously? Interfering? Well, at the very least they are citizens of India, who have the right to question and criticise the political vectors adopted by the BJP. Mr. Bhagwat's speech showed the deep fissure in political thought.. . Real issues touched upon and what brilliant timing!

Gadkariji who built the roads and highways will definitely use the same skills to build India which needs to move forward at a rapid speed. No time squabble between religions. Invest in the young of India into growth and protect the old and poor. That's the difference between the West and India. Every Indian should be proud of a sound Indian mind.

RSS is rightly bothered about Modi getting bigger than his shoes and in the process damaging the coalition in the future. I agree. Modi and the BJP will have to practise collaborative and cooperative approach. This certainly is not Modi's forte. Ever since Modi has come into electoral politics, first in Gujarat and then at the centre, he has led a majority government. He has no prior experience of leading a mixed government. However much the BJP may say, " We don't need RSS", the latter will control the strings and find someone more humble and accommodative person as PM.

“….engrossing explanations of Ch Jefrrelot “ in words of Karan is more a fitting one by contents , language , accent and transparency 👌 I hail from a remote village , born for illiterate parents -the first generation literate- an Electrical Engineer-Energy Auditor . I felt at home that it was so understandable as if in my mother tongue- Tamil ! Thanks Mr Jeffrelot ! It’s no surprise that Karan is an exemplary moderator to bring out the essence, has erred by missing to extricate Mr Jefrrelot’s view on south India in depth ? The vote share of B J P in south is paltry on its own ; but much that of state actors ! Karan failed to/ avoided to mention the status of B J P in TamilNaadu ! It might not have earned “Deposit money “ in at least one constituency had it gone on its own ! Mr Jefrrelot conviction that B J P emerged as pan India party is far from truth ! In my view Modi will try to break the other parties including Congress and wipe out the residual democratic norms ,as in the past ! R S S a conspicuous observer of the past has no locus standing to oppose Modi and replace with Mr Gadkari ! Mr Modi has assimilated with corporates who will influence/compel R S S for continued support! Mr Modi / N D A government’s fall is imminent on its own ! The question is WHEN ..?

Not to forget that the BJP had only 2 LS MP'S when they opened their account. And most of the time this Congress party was with 300+. And that the vote share of Modi has been shrinking gradually during 1919 and 2024 and that the laughable part is that he was trailing in the first 4 rounds of counting. It never happened to any former Prime Ministers so far.

It's really quite a significant dialogue that Mr. Karan has invited the eminent French historian Christophe Jafferlot. His books on political India more particularly on Modi's are awe-inspiring 🎉🎉 In his thoroughly researched book " Modi's India " he clamped down on Modi's 2002 pogram in Gujarat ( a little more vividly than Ms. Teesta Setalvad's " Footsoldier of the Constitution ).

The very mindset, which is very cruel, in other words Modi, must change and replaced immediately by someone who believes in moderate Hindu religious practices. Someone who is pragmatic and acts as a sponge with the other political parties. Nitin Gadkari is the right person. Modi must retire along with his man Friday Amit Shah.
