Maybe it would be better to use the terms South Germanic and North Germanic instead of Nordic and Germanic when speaking of religion? Because the term Germanic is meant to include all that is Germanic, which includes Nordic. 9:28 Tyr is called Ziu/Zio in the south, and is pronounced the same (as "Tsee-oo" or "Zee-oo"). For the (continental) Saxons it is said that Tyr's (or Freyr's) place was taken by Saxnot, for the Anglo-Saxons that's Seaxneat. 1:00 lol... 🤭

some important info: the ancient people who lived in Scandinavia and Germany after the ice age were not Germanic nor worshipped Germanic gods. That didn't happen until the Indo-Europeans invaded from the Eurasian steppes and conquered different cultures, picking up different traditions and mixing those with their pre-existing traditions in different ways. Germanic people formed from Indo-Europeans mixing with the Northern European natives mixed their traditions and religions... this is where the Vanir gods are from is the native Europeans. Then what happened is Germanic peoples developed their own traditions, into East Germanic (Goths, Vandals, Alans), West Germanic (Alemanni, Franks) and North Germanic (Nordic, Saxon, Jutish, etc). With this, the proto-Germanic faith also split into local variants. As for Thor, Donar and Perun... they all originate from the same god, as do Taranis, Perkunas, Hercules, Zeus and many others. The Indo-European god Perkwunos, a chariot-riding axe-wielding storm god and dragon-slayer. The KZbin channel Survive the Jive has great videos on it. Simply put: Nordic people and Nordic Paganism are Germanic, but Germanic paganism isn't Nordic. Germanic Paganism split into Nordic, Anglo, Saxon, Jutish, Gothic, Vandalic, etc. and those are what stuck. Those are all Germanic but Germanic Paganism itself is the faith of the common ancestor culture of them all.

Absolutely! I think some may think that these practices/faiths originated from where they are today but that’s not really the case. There was a merge of various peoples & then various splits. I always say that the true era of the Gods and Goddess of Asgard is yet to come. We Germanic/Nordic Pagans don't have a holy text because it is to be written in the future. As more people return to the Gods and Goddess of their Ancestors, their praise is waking up the Gods and Goddess, because They are hearing our voices and if any Gods or Goddess have no worshipers, They have no reason to interact with Us. I am Asatru because I had an intense encounter with Odin. I have seen the results of my worship to Ullr and Idunna. When, if it hasn't happened already, learn your faith and pray to Them and you will have a moving interaction with the Gods and Goddess. I became an atheist at 12 years old but found the Gods at 57. It was such a moving event and interaction with The Allfather that I am now extremely Religious. Keep the Faith Everyone and Praise to the Gods and Goddess of Asgard!

The nordic mythology is the northern branch of the germanic mythology. This video should have been called The Differences Between west germanic and north germanic paganism. Wodan and Odin are the west and north germanic names for the same god (proto germanic wodanaz), as are Donar/Þunor and Thor. Ti(modern swedish)/Tyr(old norse) are north germanic names for the proto germanic god Tiwaz, Tiw and Ziu in old english and old high german respectively. It is also worth remembering that Adam of Bremen described a fairly late version of nordic paganism. In earlier nordic paganism worshiping was also done outside in places called Vi, still found in many placenames around sweden like Odensvi (Odin´s place of worshipp), Ullevi (Ull´s place of worship) and Frösvi (Frey´s place of worship). West germanic paganism died fairly early compared to north germanic paganism due to the spread of christianity, so comparing the two should be done at a time when both where widly practiced.

North Germanic peoples, commonly called Scandinavians,[1] Nordic peoples[2] and in a medieval context Norsemen,[1] are a Germanic ethnolinguistic group of the Nordic countries.[3] They are identified by their cultural similarities, common ancestry and common use of the Proto-Norse language from around 200 AD, a language that around 800 AD became the Old Norse language, which in turn later became the North Germanic languages of today.

@@honeypot9867 let me answer your question as a catholic who has interest in all world religions and mythologies. first the difference would not be between catholics and christians since catholicism is one of the branches of christianity. lets say that the main core teachings are the same. 1. there is only one God. on this, its not exclusive to christianity or even the abrahamic religions "judaism and islam". the idea of a creator or first cause can be found in most world religions, even politheist ones. in hinduism for example have many gods yet they all are but different maniffestations of the supreme being brahma "the absiolut", its the same principle, be it viracocha for the incas, great spirit for some north american tribes, itzamma to the mayans, prime mover to greek philosoper, the three pure ones to chinese religion, khaos to greek religion. what makes us christians is that we believe that the supreme being entered the physical universe in the figure of Jesus. 2. almost all "there are some who dont" believe on the nicean creed regarding the triuine aspect of the creator and who Jesus is" 3. the differences would be not on the nature of God but certain apects such as the sacraments, the role of the pope, the role of scripture and tradition etc etc etc
@Lusizciz Жыл бұрын
@@honeypot9867The Catholic church believes in the authority of the Pope, who traces his authority back to Jesus and the disciple Peter who Jesus called the rock of his church and gave the power to forgive sins. Peter became Bishop of Rome, an office which later became Pope. Correct doctrine, as defined by popes and councils, and tradition are very important to Catholics. Catholics unlike Protestants also pray to saints for intercession, and venerate Mary the mother of Jesus, queen of heaven and born without sin. Protestantism began in the 1500s as a result of the printing press and the printing of the Bible, which lead many people to question the churches view on doctrine, creating a 1000 of denominations with different beliefs and practices. Catholics are a bit more like pagans I guess cause they value tradition/ask for help from more than just God/Jesus. What was it like being raised a Wiccan?

@@Lusizciz THANK-YOU. That was the greatest explanation I’ve ever read. This is the first time I actually understood the history!! It’s hard for me to say what it was like growing up Wiccan because it’s all I know and I have nothing to compare it to but I’ll still try haha. Wiccans believe that the the moon/earth Goddess (depending on which Wiccan tradition she’s either Earth or Moon, I was raised believing Earth while also ruling over the moon) and the Great horned God. The Earth Goddess is the creator to all that we see, plants, water, mountains, caves, animals, etc. And the great horned god is divine ruler of all animals and wild things. Depending on the traditions that each Wiccan follows, it’s believed that there is a plethora of gods and goddesses. We usually say divine feminine and divine masculine as umbrella terms for all the is divine. We follow the Wiccan rede which sets out standards that we are meant to follow such as “If he harm none, do what ye shall” We worship deity through prayer, meditation, celebration (that’s the big one), offerings, and action. My family raised me and my sisters with Celtic pagan views on Wicca. So the Earth Goddess is Goddess Danu, The great Horned God is another name for Cernunnos, and so on. There’s many different types of Wiccan tradition and beliefs; Gardenarian, Dianic, and dragonic to name a few others. I celebrate the eight Sabbats (Beltane has always been my favourite. We celebrate the thinning of the veil. That’s when the divine world and our world become closer to one another and therefore deeper spiritual understanding is possible. Beltane celebrates the peak of spring aswell as goddess Beltane. This is the time of year where Wiccans set their intentions and goals. We celebrate with a Bon Fire, maypoles, dancing, music, and ritual) I’m. Or going to get into all the sabbats otherwise this reply would never end haha. I’m not sure what more I can add so if o missed anything or I didn’t explain something well lemme know and I’ll try again

Nordic Paganism and Germanic Paganism are exactly the same. Nordic paganism is a subdivision of Germanic paganism. What we know of North Germanic (Norse) Paganism comes from a much later date, than what we know of West Germanic paganism, so differences are to be expected because cultures change over time. It is also likely that the North Germanic Paganism we know of was already influenced by Christianity. I doubt that there was a distinct separation between North Germanic and West Germanic culture in ancient times. Nation States are a very modern phenomenon. Within the groups of Celtic, Slavic, or Germanic, cultures changed gradually. You could probably have walked from the Alps to Norway, and at no point would you have seen a sudden change. We should also not think of different deities, just because North and West Germanic's seem to have used different words for them. That would be like saying that Deus, Dieu, Gott, God or Yahweh are referring to different deities and thus belong to different religions. Donar and Thor are of course exactly the same God. It is probably best to view what we know of West Germanic and North Germanic Paganism as examples of Germanic Paganism at different time periods (1000 years difference !!!) than to contribute the differences to geographic factors. I personally would go as far as to say that all ancient European religions, Romanic, Slavic, Celtic and Germanic paganism are only different flavors of the same basic European Paganism.

We see the same thing with Wodan and Odin. It is known that the North Germanic tribes had some changes in language over time (probably from the 7th century). For example, they lost the W if it came before an o or u. We see this in words like: Wolf - ulv, worm - orm, word - ord .... . Around the same time, the Old High German sound shift also occurred. Here, for example, the t became the z. Examples: two - zwei, ten - zehn, twenty - zwanzig.... .

I am really enjoying all your videos. I am impressed by the scholarship combined with down-to-earth accessibility. In other words, I like what yer layin' down. So, take this comment in that context. I think calling paganism a "faith" uses an understanding of paganism that is being derived from the Abrahamic traditions. I do not think we have "faith." I think we have experience. One of my shamanic teachers said once, "We are shamans. We do not believe ANYTHING we have not experienced, "whereas the expression "take it on faith" says it all. Believe it because it sounds good and might be "true." Believe it because of somebody else's experience. Or worse, believe it because we say so. Or believe it because it is in a book. Paganism is about a felt experience of our deep connection and comradery with the Natural World and all the Beings in the Otherworld(s). We need take nothing "on faith."

Also Wodan is the God of frenzy/extacy, in the Dutch and Flemish tongue for example, the word woedend means being so angry that you lose control, woedend is connected to Wodan, in old Dutch Wuotan. Wu and Woe sounds almost the same in Flemish or Dutch. That Wodan was introduced by other Germanic tribes in Scandinavia is true, by war or by tribes that flee to to north, that's a matter to debate. But Wodanaz is much older than Odin.

@IRMINSUL. We stay pagan. We don't betray. Indeed, if that is correct.. I don't know. Some say they are the same, others don't. I think they are different... and that for some tribes Irmin was a very important god. But for other tribes Irmin didn't even exist. Well, Wodanaz os much older then Odin, and Irmin as well. Throughout the years scholars have struggled to seek the true definitive explanation to the phenomena to find and proffer the true identity of who or what that figure ultimately is, be it a representation of a hypostasis of some God such as Ziu (Tyr) or Wodan, or simply the figurative embodiment of the collective magan and holiness of the Gods overall- the power of divinity, the power of a unified body of the Gods themselves. It's so interesting.... But I don't know.

Tacitus’ work is a work of plagiarism, we cannot verify how much of what actually “was” according to him is actually true, very much like how Snorri changed a great many things in his works. Germanic is a linguist classification, so lineage of the Germanic speaking tribes are more Celtic. The religion has its roots in many different tribal cultures, which is why our religion looks like many different other religions. All pagan religions have identical ideas and characters as well as a very similar structure. Odin, Óðinn, Woden, etc are all the same god, and how he and other gods were venerated changed and adapted over the years as the religion began to grow. Our religion was always a word of mouth religion, and my family has different stories of Odin and the Aesir and Vanir as our traditions go as far back as who knows when just as the same is said for many others. By the time Snorri first wrote down these stories, it had changed considerably throughout the years and it continued to change after. The tribes were a nomadic people, their traditions and stories grew with the more ground they covered and the more people they encountered and became what we know today after the Varangian tribe otherwise known as the Vikings first attacked Lindisfarne in an act of revenge against Charlemagne ordering the executions of 4500 Saxon pagans, a tribe that the Varangians came from. The key to this is the gods are very much the same or similar and each tribe had different ideas. They didn’t practice an organized religion, nor do we.
@richb38023 жыл бұрын
Very true. I've heard about the attack on Lindisfarne as being revenge for Verden, but also that it was just part of the general raiding culture of the Vikings, going back to the Mannerbunde. Could actually be both. Fascinating stuff.

They are not different beliefs, if you research the timeline of Indo-European People, and religion, they flow from one to the next through the years, same gods, goddesses, deities, Etc, just name changes, its not hard to know which came first, germanic gods came first as their history is much older, only through immigrating out did the scandinavians come, and later, Viking period, this Norse Paganism IS Germanic Paganism, just a more recent version. Woden become Wotan became Odinn. Donar became Thor, etc.

“What do you think happened to him?” He was essentially framed for defying Rome on trumped up charges. And the spectacle of those defying Rome in Germania, resulting in crucifixion, was not an uncommon sight. And the might of Rome was bending all before it in those days. The gods and goddesses of Rome were mightier than all, and the Romans said as much. Especially when they were intent upon avenging Varus. And then this crucified one from Galilee himself conquered Rome and became its ensign. “In hoc signo vinces”

If you are looking for heruli. The name of our city is Heru. The people of the city are called Heruli. Heru city is located in Azarbaijan, Iran. But the Persians changed the name of our city to Khalkhal. Of course, the Persians are trying to change the names of all our cities and villages. It is said that in the past, perhaps thousands of years ago, warriors or soldiers practiced war in our city. And because of this, the name of our city is known as Heru. Fars still could not change the names of several villages in our city. The name of the village is Borgehim. And the village is Berga. And the village is Warsva. Of course, these are the names of several villages out of hundreds of villages in our city. Are these names not familiar? About two hundred years ago, the government spread the Kurds in our villages at the request of the British. Although more than ten villages now speak Kurdish. But some Kurdish-speaking families settled in all our villages. It is clear that it was to change our race. Of course, this action has also happened to the Turkish-speaking cities of Iraq. Now it is known that the Kurds in Iranian Kurdistan have Arab roots. Maybe they have a few percent of the Indian race and the yellow race. Did the English want to change our race to Arabic? What made England want to change our race. At the present time, Fars wants to change our race to Arabic. Because the Persian race is also of the Arab race. Now, in the map, the name berga has been changed to the word "flag" in Arabic or Farsi. If you look at the rb haplogroup map, the path is the same. When you and others moved to Europe you mixed with Northern European races or in Europe. And new races were born. The Indo-European race is also a lie. There is no rb in Fars, Iran, nor in India. Even the Persian language is Arabic. The Persians presented themselves as pure German. And they despised everyone. Now it is known that the Persians are of the Arabian Arabian race. If it wasn't for genetic science, Fars would still identify itself as German. Almost 30 years ago, I went to Kerman. Almost 40 people had gathered in a spring near the village. I was stoned for being a Mongol. And if one person in this crowd looked like a European, it was me. But the villagers thought they were Germans. Still, those who did not take a genetic test assume that they are German. The new German race consists of several European races. It is completely different from the German race of 3000 years ago. All races changed. There are still people who do not understand why the race of Turkey and Greece is different from 3000 thousand years ago. The Ottoman government ruled dozens of Arab countries and the people of these countries came to the center of the Ottoman government to have a better life. It is clear that the race will change.
