Mr Wolfe. I was in a 99cent store the other day and like you, I am fascinated by the frozen food section. I noticed what looked like your standard cheep tube hamburger (normally $3 for a 1lb tube) and was curious how they could sell it for $1. I inspected it and it contains the same ingredients one of your recent hamburger patty reviews contained. Beef, beef hearts and textured vegetable protein! A whole pound of it for a dollar! You MUST review it. I would, but it scared the hell out of me.

Probably much older beef from geographically farther location, with far less health and safety standards - worse cuts ranging from gross to questionable pieces. 10 cents for the plastic wrapping and you've got BEEF
@clutchcargo6667 жыл бұрын
Remember on "Cheers", Norm took Cliff to The Hungry Heifer and mentioned how good the BEF was. Cliff corrected him and said "you mean BEEF". Norm said no, BEF is HH's trademarked.... meat-like substance. When Cliff looked at him in disgust, Norm said "I dunno, you seemed to really enjoy your LOOBSTER."

@@TheWolfePit It's funny, I liked potted meat a lot when I was a kid, we used to carry it when I was in the Boy Scouts. I got to a certain age and was able to understand the label and got grossed out and stopped eating it! I think now (fifty years later) I could face it again and judge it on its merits. For the record I think a few slices of SPAM fried up and eaten while they're still hot are something I'll eat with real enthusiasm, TREET seems sad and questionable, getting closer to stuff like canned vienna sausages (say) that are edible but just seem like emergency food, or something you might like if you were on a camping trip.

@syxepop7 жыл бұрын
Most likely the Clover Leaf (the Danish pork-only luncheon meat) was either made by Tulip, which is the largest luncheon meat name brand over in Denmark and most of Europe, or by one of their competitors over there. The Bristol (the mixed-meat American brand that could've been made by (I do believe) "est. P-4247", which makes most of the American luncheon meats and vienna sausages I see on the supermarket, OTOH, has a different consistency and more color. Where I live the no-name American brands (incl. Walmart / Amigo's Great Value) would cost anywhere from $1.67 (smaller-scale brand on sale) to $2.29 (pork-only), the name brands starting at ~ $2.50 on sale to slightly > $3.00. The Danish-made brands would go at the higher range as do the American name-brands like Spam or Treet. In Puerto Rico supermarkets there are usually at least 10-15 brands of luncheon meats available, along with 5-8 brands of vienna sausages and a few brands of potted meat (we love that stuff, although we're not as obsessed as the Hawaiians with those...).

Just an FYI, but those two meat products were very likely actually Spam and Treet, just repacked or rebranded for sale overseas or just for a discounter here in the US. For example, many grocery stores, like Kroger or Safeway, have their own discounted "store brands". All these big chains do is commission some amount of another company's products, like frozen veggies or cocoa puffed cereal, repackage with their own brand and sell at a discount.
