The Who’s iconic anthem from 1971’s Who’s Next album performed here on B-Stage at Shepperton Studios on 25 May 1978 Filmed by Jeff Stein for the closing sequence of The Kids Are Alright. Sadly this was to be the very last performance ever by Keith Moon.

Travis & Suzi, By 1978, the who was dormant. they hadn't released an album or toured since 1975's "Who by the numbers" and they were actually considering disbanding. Legendary party animal keith moon was in poor health and was not in any condition physically to play the drums in his usual maniacal style. the character "animal" on the muppet show was based on him. keith got himself into rehab and while he was in better shape, he still wasn't ready to tour. the solution was for the who to film a concert at Shepperton studios in england. the first crack at it was disastrous (Pete almost got into a fight with a fan who was demanding that he throw him his guitar from the stage), but the second attempt was triumphant. this rousing version of won't get fooled again shows what the who could be live when they were on their game. side note....you'll notice keith moon wearing headphones, held on by gaffer's tape. since the synthesizer part of the song was taped, keith had to keep time to it for the band. the gaffer's tape was needed because he was so crazy behind the drums, the headphones wouldn't stay on. watch towards the end of the song when keith knocks one of his cymbals off its stand. enjoy!

When The Who performed this gig at Shepperton Studio's for their film "The Kids Are Alright", the movie "Alien" was being filmed in the studio next door. The cast and crew of "Alien" took a break and went over to watch The Who concert. They liked the laser show at the end of Won't Get Fooled Again so much, they ended up borrowing the laser equipment from The Who and used it in the "Alien" movie. So next time you watch "Alien", keep an eye out for The Who's lasers! Also, a young and unknown Chrissie Hynde was in the crowd watching the show. Chrissie went on to form the band the Pretenders.

Chrissie was also a shop assistant working in a fasion store on the King's Road in London, she helped a young guy she worked with learn the guitar and with his vocals, as he was just about to form a band the guy was Glen Matlock, the store was Sex owned by Vivienne Westwood and his band was The Sex Pistols, she later asked Malcolm McLaren if he could help her form a band and he said she was too talented to be in one of his bands.

THE BASS!!! John Entwistle is absolutely legendary and defined how rock bass is played. He is the reason that bass players play roundwound strings today- he developed them with Rotosound strings to be more like piano strings than double bass strings.

Mr Thunderfingers. An absolute God to a teenage me in the '60 playing bass. One of the reasons (amongst other advantages) Roundwound were better for bassists was because the strings need a fair amount of pressure and when you slid your fingers you got a deep cluttered 'zzzz' sound off your fingers. Sounds great on lead guitar but crap on a bass.

On May 31, 1976, The Who set the then Guinness Book World Record at the Valley, the football stadium for the Charlton Athletic team. They reached 126 dB. Besides being very loud, they are very very talented. Roger's scream at 12:29 followed by the line "meet the new boss, same as the old boss" cannot be touched by anybody else.

So I saw The Who 4 times during the 70's and seeing them live is an experience like no other. First off all, no one swings a mic like Roger Daltry. And he's got one of the top rock 'n roll screams in the business. Pete Townshend - a genius. He introduced the synthesizer to rock. He originated the windmill arm. And he was the first to trash his guitar on stage at the end of a show. Musically, no one could touch him. Keith Moon didn't play the drums - he attacked them. 90% of his drumming was fills. John Entwistle- best bassist I've ever seen. Amazing times, amazing music. I was lucky. Definitely explore them more.

The Who were unmatched in the early 70's, playing with a raw power and energy that was way ahead of it's time. Their Live at Leeds album is one of the greatest ever. My Generation, Young Man Blues, Magic Bus, Amazing Journey/Sparks and many more are all bangers. Like a runaway freight train they keep comin'. Greatest concert I ever went to. In Seattle1973, The Who was an absolute circus show. We got our money's worth 10 times over. Lead singer Rodger Daltry is throwing his microphone about 50 feet up in the air and catching it right on a certain note being played in the song. They were the Best. Keith Moon (drummer) was a show by himself. Such a great Band. Top 3 Rock Band of all time at the very least.

In the CNN Eagles documentary, Glenn Frye recounts working with famous producer Glyn Johns in London. When he tried to tell Johns they weren’t a country act but rather a rock and roll band. Indignantly, Johns yelled at him, “you’re not a rock and roll band!!! THE WHO ARE A ROCK AND ROLL BAND!!!”

Seeing these four guys playing live is mind-blowing. Pete is reported to have still done some of those "jump to the knees" gestures in fairly recent years, although not when I saw them. I got to see this original lineup 3 times, and it was always great. The first time I saw them in 1973 was my favorite concert of the last 50 years.

It was the (first) Quadrophenia tour. This was the concert immediately after Keith's passing-out at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Roger later said that Keith hadn't performed well on this night, from the continued effects of the drug he had taken. But he was SO good to me, it made me think that if that's an off night for Keith, then he really is amazing.

Great, legendary song! The Keyboard and drums part in the "laser section" at the end is the opener for every KISS concert for decades! The whole song is played (tape) and then the curtain falls......RnR!!! You can imagine an audience of thousands of KISS Fans , cheered up with this song - great every time - dynamite!

Very thankful that I grew up in the London area and Ealing in particular where this amazing band played. Ealing was the centre of British Rock through the 60's. Jim Marshall (of amplification fame) had his shop on the Broadway. The old Walpole Cinema was used as a rehearsal venue by many including Queen and Kevin Ayres. The Ealing Club (Alexis Korner) had seen the birth of the blues explosion led by the likes of Mayall, Clapton, Page and Beck. David Byron of Uriah Heep lived around the corner from me. The Stones played at Ealing and so the list goes on. Liverpool had its own base at The Cavern for many but for me Ealing had the best and the most influential rock roots and to be able to rub shoulders with those that have become living legends was something else.

"Magic Bus" from their Live at Leeds album is another awe inspiring song from these guys. John Entwhistle wasn't known as Thunderfingers for nothing. He never considered himself a bass player. He looked at it as playing lead in a lower register. Roger Daltry had the microphones modified with heavy duty connectors so it wouldn't come off the cord when he whipped them around like that. Pete Townsend was notorious for being hard on equipment. I used to have a picture of him jamming the neck of a Les Paul into a speaker cone of one of his stacks. And the whole time Keith, Roger, and Pete were running around like madmen, John would stand at his end of the stage and simply play his ass off. You can find several of his isolated tracks here on YT. There's also a video of a very early appearance by them on The Smothers Brothers Show that's worth watching. The plan was to have a small pyro charge set up in the drum kit and set it off right at the end of the song just to reinforce their growing reputation as loud and rowdy. However Keith being the madman that he was and the pyro guy being a pyro guy, they kept egging each other on as to how much powder they could get away with. By the time they got done and finally set it off, it damn near blew the kit apart and it was literally minutes before Pete and Keith could hear much of anything again. To this day, Pete blames that charge for a large part oh his hearing loss.

Arguably one of the best rock bands ever. Peter Townsend wrote all of the music and was one of the best guitar players ever. That windmill was a move that he was famous for. Roger Daltry, arguably the best front man ever. His performance of "Tommy" was epic. John Entwhistle, nicknamed Thunder Fingers, was one of, if not the best bass players ever and last but not least, Keith Moon, once again, arguably the best rock drummer ever. That's a historic rock band. When they first started they would destroy their instruments at the end of every show. I think it was on the old Mike Douglas show where Keith blew up his drum set. Y'all need to check more of their stuff out.

They don't show it in that clip, but the reason Moonie threw the cymbal out the way is because when the song finished he jumped over the kit to join everybody else at the front of the stage. It's a truly incendiary performance. You should check out their performance of A Quick One on the Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus. The film wasn't release for decades because Jagger was furious at the way The Who upstaged them. The performance has the lot, Moonie throwing a drum behind him, Townsend adjusting the mic with his nose and even more energy than this video. Great reaction though, cheers from the UK x

Tremendous live band, saw them 9 times including with the original band in the 70s, no one rocked harder than they did. For a look at them in peak form but a little younger, check out their videos from 69/70 from Woodstock, The Isle of Wight Festival and at Tanglewood, more Astounding Rock by them. After Pink Floyd, the original band was the best band I ever heard/seen. The stories about them going crazy are true, the first time I saw them they were just remarkable and one of the first bands I saw with the raised PA in 4 channels. At the end of the show Pete destroyed his guitar and Moon knocked much of his drum kit off the platform and onto the stage, utter bedlam with John Entwhistle, the Rock of Gibraltar on bass, ignoring the chaos and playing on with a ridiculous solo. More WHO Please! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

This is the music i grew up listening to. I was so lucky to be introduced at a young age to bands like The Who, The Rolling Stones, and then into The Jam and The Police.

This was the last performance by the drummer, Keith Moon, with the band.....he died a few weeks later. It has been said that if you named the top 3 bass players in the World, John Entwistle would be all three! The Who were always known as "The Most Exciting Live Band in the World!"

I first saw The Who on TV as a very young teenager and have been a fan ever since. Any time I hear a Who song come on the radio it gets cranked up!!! I can't say enough about them. I just wish I could have seen them when they were still all alive.

I saw The Who live in 1981 ( its hard tour. ) the line up was The B-52's ( who promptly got run off stage as people were throwing hot dogs , cokes among other things at them ..) it was festaval seating at the Tangarine bowl ( Orlando Fla.) Then it was Joan Jett , The Doobie Brothers ACDC ( it was when the wireless guitar system first came out 2 stage crew walked up to the front of the stage and wrapped their arms around Angus Youngs legs and ran him completely around the stadium while he wailed on his guitar it was wild. ) then The Who came out and played for the next 3 hrs. It was an all day event. One of the best shows I've ever seen. I was right at the front of the stage standing in front of Joan Jett as she played ( she rocked and I became a fan for life.)

This was the last performance with Keith Moon. This concert was performed only to create footage for their film, "The Kids Are Alright" ( a great song that was only featured during the closing credits ). I had the good fortune to see The Who in 1968 when they did their "The Who Sell Out" tour, and then in 1971 at Forest Hills when they premiered their "Who's Next" tour. Everything you just witnessed Pete Townshend do in this one song he had been doing for many years already, and he was the innovator (no one did it before him). Keith Moon was the greatest drummer who ever lived! No one before had ever brought that type of drumming energy to recorded music! As good as this performance was, the raw energy had evaporated a great deal from the energy they had in 1968 and 1971(if you can believe it)! For me, when Moon died in 1978, so did The Who!

Sadly a long time friend of mine passed away two weeks ago knew him for forty years. He was the biggest who fan ever and before he passed he gave me his John Entwistle autographed who flag that he got after meeting John after a show. Four of them partied backstage till 5am . One of the four was a guy who turned down a job as the fifth beatle. But that's a hole story 😊

1975, front row. Threw my visor onstage, landed on Moon’s cymbal, so he put it on without missing a beat. BTW, the energy was like that for the whole concert. Damn, those were the days!

Four brilliant musicians performing groundbreaking and brilliant music. "Best of" lists of rock musicians always have Keith Moon in the top two or three drummers and often have Jon Entwistle as the top bassist - there's an isolated bass video of this performance which is unbelievable. Then there's Pete's classic guitaring and Roger with those vocals and that scream... energy x 10 and one of the greatest performances ever. Have you seen the official video for their song "Who Are You?" yet? It's a load of fun and a great song.

One of the best concerts I ever saw in my life in the late eighties Glen Falls New York the Who's opening show for a reunion tour and they played for like 4 hours.

There is a version of this with the bass isolated. John Entwistle was a monster and in a league of his own. Closest I have seen was the bass player from a band called the Senseless Things who were around from the late eighties into early 90s come to think of it their drummer was comparable to Moon.

I saw The Who the following year. keith Moon had died in September 78, and was replaced by Kenney Jones of The Faces for the 79 world tour. They performed like that for almost 3 hours. Daltreys mike swinging was his trade mark. To see this band live around this time was astounding. At this time they were also recognised as the loudest band in the world. With a stage act and light show to match.
