Oils are strong supporters of human rights, environmental, first nations. They had a series and No 1 hits in the 1980s & 1990s. The singer Peter Garret, the singer, is a barrister and one time senator and minister in the Australian government. Oils are legends in Australian music.

Garrett was never a lawyer let alone a barrister, frankly it's tiring hearing this often repeated 'fact'...pink bats were great though eh? Maybe the real world and the solutions it requires are marginally harder to implement than pissing and moaning about them in tunes..

It was a small wall section of a corrugated iron rainwater tank. Capturing water off the roof and storing it in a galvanized iron tank was an iconic part of many Australian backyards 50 years ago.

@@jimwilcox2964 Stuart's right: it's an iron tank for storing water on this dryest of all continents (and that was so prior to our current catastrophic climate change!). "Iconic" is right - it's as Aussie a symbol as you can think of. And if you live outside major metropolitan areas or anywhere without water connected, you'll still have one. I live on the outskirts of Melbourne - we have a 110,000 litre one of these.

Was out in the middle of the Western Australian outback surrounded by red dust and emu's when I saw a sign at the local pub saying 'Oil' Ain't Oil's playing live tonight'... went along for a beer and performing was Midnight Oil, to a crowd of about 50 people... which was most of the town! Both the crowd and band were lovin' it, here was a massive Aussie band playing their pub instead of a massive arena in the US...was a brilliant night. As they played under a false name we guessed it was off the books and possibly a last minute idea as they passed thru for whatever reason... but it's still talked about in the town to this day, haha!
@stevegraham3817
@stevegraham3817 2 жыл бұрын
2 reasons, firstly to show their appreciation to every fan, every where, most of the big bands did small towns in between the big cities, usually under a false name. Secondly, to test out new or controversial songs, to gauge the crowd reactions, if it was no good only 50 people knew about it. lol. or even like this one with the instrumentals to see if people get into it or not, a lot of sort of those things get developed and tested on the road.

I was at that gig. Simply amazing. Guitarist/keyboards Jim Moginie had ripped his hamstring at a gig a few days earlier, and had to be wheeled onto the stage in a wheelchair here. There was doubt about whether it would happen, being towards the end of their reunion tour. At end of the gig, the rest of the band swarmed onto Jim and hugged him. So emotional. I cried unashamedly.

That small water tank was found in the desert on Midnight Oil’s tour of the north of Australia’s indigenous communities with one of our great First Nations bands Warumpi Band. They have been touring with this tank for years and it actually has a bunch of quotations pickups taped to the inside to enhance the sound. Rob Hirst loves throwing his sticks into it which must be a nightmare for Clem his drum tech to retrieve every night. Thank you for posting this! The Oils have always been my favourite band. I hope you react to many more of their songs. They are one of the best live acts period.

Midnight oil was formed in 1976. The bass player ( Bones ) is the only non original member who joined in 1987. This concert was in 2022. The band members are now in their 60’s and 70’s. For 50 years this band has been the greatest live band of all time. I’ve been a fan since around 1980 and I love them just as much now than I had 40 years ago. I love you Guy’s as well. Rob Hirst is the reason I taught myself to play drums.

Peter Garrett is a national treasure. This is when being original is just being yourself. Socially aware, culturally sensitive, Midnight Oil is globally recognized and his band is freaking awesome. One of the reasons I tune in to you is you are uniquely qualified for these reaction videos. Being on the inside of the music industry gives you insights to how things are done or based on your own experiences of what it takes to present your music to the world in a way that sets you apart from the others while still retaining your integrity to the music itself. Peter Garrett does this better than most and I think you have done a nice job of showing the beautiful experience of listening to and seeing a performance for the very first time. You have such joy in the musical experience knowing how much goes into the creation of new material.

I have a DVD of this tour. Being a bass player, I was quite amazed how much better the bass is in this live show. It seems more prominent than in the studio version. As for the drumming, I once heard Midnight Oil described as a band to showcase Rob Hirst's drumming. But each member of this band carries their own weight. And the thing you are talking about is a sheet of corrugated iron. Very typical in out back Australia and many houses have corrugated tin roofs. Not recommended for areas where you have cyclones or tornadoes. I heard a story about the cyclone in Darwin in 1972 (I think). A man was running with his wife for shelter, he was holding her hand, when a sheet of corro was blown from a house, about his wife in half.

You guys should really listen to the drum solo on the album version. They were working with a British producer called Nick Launay who had just worked with "The Models" and the Oils were sick of him talking about how inventive and creative they were in the studio. Launay identified power and the passion was gonna be "the song" but it needed something, so he just said to Rob Hirst, "this is your 20 seconds, just go crazy and hit everything".
