They just played their last gig a few months back. Nearly 4 hours and they are all in their late 60’s. It was an awesome night. The greatest band ever. Oooiiiillllllsssssss

That entire concert video - “Oils on the Water” is essential viewing. If you’re after another official video (studio recording) of Midnight Oil to check out, don’t go past “Forgotten Years”.

I never saw him as a dancer. But I did hear him as a singer. Powerful and passionate. I am a Kiwi, the Aussies will fill in the details of him as a speaker and politician.

Peter Garrett has done so many things - rockstar, lawyer, two time president of the Australian Conservation Foundation, federal member of parliament and served as Minister of the Environment and the Arts, and then Education Minister in the Rudd and Gillard Labor governments.

This was their 'breakthrough' song - the first one that got air-play on mainstream radio. Had great hooks so worked in the commercial setting but retained the early Oils' edge so that it gave us radio-listeners a bit of a shake-up; here was something local (I'm from NZ and that's near enough in this case) that was also something special. Glory ensued. Incidentally, if you don't already know, you'll be interested that Peter Garrett was the Australian Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts for a while.

Once again, Harri, I'm so delighted you liked my song. I agree, I like this one as much, or even more, than "Beds are Burning". And, yes, "powerful" is the right word. I loved your reaction! These guys do no love songs, they are straight-ahead singing about social injustice, mainly but not solely, in Australia. We need someone like them here, now.
@adwood2012 жыл бұрын
Not just social injustice, it's also about Political evils and international political influence.

These guys sure could put on a show, and you're right , it was exhausting just watching them live. You're also right about people mimicking Peter Garrett's dance moves in the crowd, lol. Great reaction, thank you Harri.

Proud to say that I have all their albums. Original vinyl. I love bands that comment on political, environmental, & social, issues. And to think that he went into politics and became our minister for the 'Environment, Heritage, and the Arts'. And then later, minister for 'School Education, Early Childhood, & Youth'. So he really did try to change the system from both the outside & the inside.

I became a fan in the early 80's due t this song. Still a fan but prefer their 80's material to the more recent. Saw them live in 1990. One of the best live bands I've seen. Seeing them again this week.
