The Woodland Escape

8 ай бұрын

Peter raises the Union Jack over Kelly Station (soon to be switched over to the period correct flag, "Kings Colours"), then gives a tour of progress to date: the privy and smoke house moved inside the planned palisade, the framing for the wall across the end of the pond and the site for the barracks. He saves the progress on the powder magazine to share with his wee bit of history.
He also welcomes Koen Tholhuijsen, a fellow outdoor enthusiast, accomplished musician, KZbin creator, and helping hand at the fort. Together they, with the help of Koen's dog, Lex, spread straw over the mud and begin construction of the first blockhouse.
The music Koen plays is written by Marcel La Haye.

Excellent! I'm glad to see Kelly Station is coming along nicely! I'm really looking forward to seeing it come together. As for the explosion of the Grand Magazine at Fort York, there are journal entries that the explosion was felt at Fort George and Fort Niagara. I've also had the chance to visit Gen. Pike's grave at Sackets Harbor.

There is something about having your own place that simply requires a flag. After the house here was finished the flagpole was one of the first things that went up. I used a white cedar that I found lying down after the land was cleared. It must have been 25-30 feet tall and was about 10 inches around. I dug a hole 5 feet deep and poured in two bags of dry cement. That little 3x5 flag looked so SAD up there. I didn't trim the limbs as close as I should have, and the flag had a problem with wrapping around the pole but darn it, I had up a flag. 20 years later and that flagpole is still there. It has a bluebird house and a bat box on it. The "real" flagpole is in the front yard with a 20ft aluminum pole and a light that shines down. A 3x5 flag looks MUCH better on that pole!

Hey Peter! Kelly's Station is making quit a bit of progress! Given your location... I forgive the Flag. (Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!)) I always thought that Betty Zane's heroics deserved wider recognition. General Pike's fate still serves as a cautionary tale about Senior Officers commanding too near the front! (See Gen. John Sedgewick) That was some beautiful music!

EGADZ PETER! You're busier than a beaver at; Station Kelly! LOOKS absolutely LOVELY! I like how you 'caved' by keeping the 'view of the pond' = abiance/practicality! But then...compensating by perching the 'swivel gun' nearby! = Good trade off! LOL! U found yet another 'fine player' with world travels behind him that must make many fine stories to share by the hearth. Methinks by the time your 'Station' is ready...it will come with it's own community. Nice camera work Empress Catherine, to the tune of your visitor's melodies. "Two roads have diverged in a wood and I - I took the one less traveled by and that has made all the difference." (Robert Frost). Take care dears ones and thamks muchly 4 sharing your wonderfilled lives with us! :)

I truly love what you're doing with the Woodland Escape. I also have personal experience partially building a French and Indian War Fort or Outpost in the greater Baton Rouge area. Also it's been left out many times not just by yourself but many others New Orleans was a fortified City founded in 1718 the Main Street still Bears the name Rampart so please consider acknowledging your farthest French sister in the Americas as a fortified City also there's a book called America's most fortified city which is of all of the forts around the greater New Orleans area thank you for all you do

Those fortifications sliced diagonally across what are now the 100 blocks and 1300 blocks of the French Quarter, between Canal and Iberville streets and between Barracks Street and aptly named Esplanade Avenue. In the rear of the city, along eponymous Rampart Street, the wall had the shape of a delta wing.May 12, 2017

Peter love what you do and as i can only do similar in fleeting events from the time of 1770 to1800 as a British marine no not Royal as they were not that in that period, the flag you are flying and hate to rain on the fort you are flying is the UNION JACK circa 1804 the correct is what is known as the Queen Anne. is minus the cross of St Patrick or the union cross ,keep up the great work ,my vintage may be more than yours BUT would be unable to do as you have here in the land down under PC incorrect these days in the land of Skippy..

As a Texan, of the Republic of Texas (1836-1846) I might have a slight historical technological advantage, if ever so slight, over the 1700's. Perhaps a Texan flag would look quite nicely next to that Union Jack! On that note, how entertaining would it be to have flags of all your visitors homelands set up around your Fort as a tribute. Bravo sir, I hope to visit someday. @@TheWoodlandEscape
