Community based fisheries management in Solomon Islands

More than 80% of Solomon Islanders live in coastal communities, where fisheries and marine resources are critical sources of food, nutrition and income. To replenish dwindling fish stocks and ensure plentiful supplies for future generations, communities are developing fisheries management plans to control the use of marine resources.
This is part of a ‘community-based fisheries management’ approach that communities carry out themselves over their marine resources, recognizing that they are the owners and custodians of their oceans and coastlines.

Use of WW2 military grade explosives for bomb fishing within and arround the lagoon has reduced corals into piles of dead coral rumbles on the seafloor. Hundreds of tones of corals were extracted from the shallow lagoon waters to be used as construction materials for man-made islands for human habitation. Hundreds of mangrove trees were being choped down for firewood and and construction purposes. The rapid increase in population since the last 30 or so years has contributed very much to the population putting more and more pressure on the marine ecosystem in the LLL. It is quite a challenge and interesting work for community development professionals addressing issues in this eunik context on the land locked LLL of the Solomon Islands.

Most of the inshore reefs and lagoons are almost fished out This is due to increase in population. There has to be some kind of control system in place
