As far as I understand it, the mountains in this area used to be in a shallow sea. Sandstone was intruded into the seabed, which created harder sandstone among softer rock. When the ocean "receded", what this really means is that the area got pushed up in elevation which left the water behind at sea level. at the same time, the softer rock wore away, creating these pillars. they are in fact still eroding today, but slowly. another thing to note is that mountains usually take million of years to form. The youngest mountains in the world are the Tetons, and they are still 6 million years old. The youngest large mountain range is the Himalayas, and even though they started forming about 60 million years ago, they are still being uplifted.
