Reg Seekings was a one-eyed boxer and early member of the S.A.S and he was present when Bergen-Belsen was liberated. Apparently when they arrived the guards were shooting the prisoners and Seekings commander made it quite clear that if it didn't stop immediately his men would make sure that "bad things" would happen to the guards. If that didn't quite get the guards to comply then what Reg Seekings did next most certainly did because being a boxer he floored one of the guards with a single punch, the guard got up again upon which Reg hit him again- the guard didn't get up this time and funnily enough the guards started behaving after that...

For those who live across the pond who might be confused as to why English and Scottish are being 'mean' to eachother. This is just how we are, but make no mistake, we are Brother countries, anyone of you yanks start on either one of us (English or Scottish), then the other will come to their defence. We can pick on eachother, you can't. And don't even think about starting shit with Wales either. We (England and Scotland) may pick on Wales mercilessly, but we'll stand up for them if anyone else takes a pop at them. Its just how we are.

The fact is that different regiments of the British Army were indoctrinated into having contempt for other regiments. Thats a fact ; it helped create competition in who was meaner. So, in the end, they had more respect for the Germans than they had for each other. Worst of all, they had contempt for British civilians.

@williamjohnson5229

@Harry-uq1qn regimental rivalries have always been encouraged by British high command. It's partly because of the way regiments were recruited. It was based on geographical location. So the men had an immense pride in their regiments as they were representing their home town or county. Nobody from Yorkshire is gojbg to allow some one from Lancashire to embarrass them, so they will fight harder to prove themselves. This is a great statergy on the battlefield, but when out on the drink it does lead to alot of brawls.
@olliephelan
@olliephelan Ай бұрын
@@williamjohnson5229 And what about contempt for civilians ? Supposedly the people they are supposed to protect but often die in far greater numbers. No one in the military has to worry about what they should do next. Its all based on orders and drill. Civilians must make their own choices, choose their own bosses, make their own orders and stick by them with their own will power. Its why so many soldiers find it hard to adapt to civilian life ,because theres no one giving them clear orders anymore. Its also why so many troubled people go for the Army. And why courts can give someone a choice between jail or the army. The first thing the Royal Marines and Paras teach their recruits is how to brush their teeth and how to shower. They actually DEMONSTRATE IT Then how to make their beds.
@williamjohnson5229
@williamjohnson5229 Ай бұрын
@@olliephelan what do you mean by contempt for civilians? I'm ex army and I have no idea what you mean by that be use neither or anyone I knew in the army had any strong negative feelings towards civvies? The vast majority of our family and friends are civvies? So what exactly are you referring to? I was in the parachute regiment and yes you get taught how to make a bed, because they don't want you to just make it however you want, it has to be done exactly as they demonstrate it, not because they actually care how you make your bed but because they want to see your ability to follow simple instructions, before moving on to more complicated tasks. The showering thing is because personal hygiene is incredibly important when you have large groups of people living on close quarters together, poor hygiene leads to poor health. Being given a choice between the military or prison isn't a thing anymore and hasn't been for decades.

This makes no sense to me. The rest of them, especially the scot have the most appalling looking caps in history, even for the 40s. @seanmorris

The first SAS berets were hideous oversized white beret ('chaseur beret') that apparently weren't that popular with the troops who tended to get abuse thrown at them from other soldiers in the streets and bars of Cairo when they wore them leading to fights hence this scene After a short while they changed to a more standard army tan beret until the SAS returned to the UK and came under umbrella of Airbourne forces and had to wear maroon berets (said to be an unpopular change for the SAS troopers). When the Regiment was reformed after the war they changed back to the classic sand beret.

This makes no sense at all, probably because it was written by an Englishman who does know the first thing about the history of the regiment. Like, it was formed by a Scot, and there has been a higher percentage of Scots recruited over the years than any other part of the UK. The BBC should be censured over this piece of cheap stereotyping of tyhe relationship between the Scots and the English, because it’s simply not true, or hasn’t;t been for around seven hundred years, so it’s just lazy writing. It’s a terrible show, to be honest.

This whole series is based on first hand accounts given to a historian by the founding members of the SAS. He wrote a book and made a documentary this drama is based on that documentary and book. Inter regiment rivalry is actually very common and overflows to levels that are often not very good for discipline. A former Para I know recounted how 2 and 3 Para had to be sent to different areas in a training exercise in Germany because they were taking pot shots at each other for shits and giggles as he termed it.

That's perhaps true, but which countries are respected now? China - a heavy controlling state with collapsing infrastructure and an economy nose diving into catastrophe, Russia run by a dictator causing chaos and mass death with his stupid war, India with its shocking poverty, pollution, wealth disparity and a divisive leader, or the US perhaps which has an amazing economy but is close to civil war with the real possibility it will abandon democracy and go for a senile criminal. When I look around the world I see a shit show. The UK has many many problems and lots of people are struggling, but its still a relatively good place to live. People from all over the world want to come and live here that's for sure. Where l live there are Japanese, Brazilians, Portuguese, Afro Caribbean, Nigerian, Indian, Pakistani, Polish, French, Irish, Aussies, and Spanish to name but a few.
