I'm a Canadian driver, I've been hauling load into the USA and back for 26 years. There is no such thing as a visa. Maybe for those who are not Canadian citizens and we're not allowed to haul freight in the USA, that is called interstating, and it's illegal if you get caught, 150.000 dollars fine you get your truck and trailer repossessed and you lose ability to enter the USA forever.

I hope they do the same with truckers from MX…. But they don’t. They leave early from home in MX,cross the border and drive in USA…then they go back in MX . Glad you bring that up , if you are from south tx you will hear a lot of CDL drivers complaining about big mega carriers that hire B1 drivers , and of course mega carriers love b1 drivers because they pay them 32 c the mile , as far of the insurance goes they get pretty creative , they hire cdl drivers to pick up the load , and then the b1 driver hauls it , and they pick up here in the US and deliver here as well , they are sabotaging the cargo , , there are some insurances that let you hire b1 drivers but you will have to pay a lot more , but like i say big carriers they get very creative on getting away with it , and the ones causing all this accidents are in fact b1 drivers , if the gov actually enforce the law where its need to be done there will still be hope in this industry , the reason tht is failing for a lot of small carriers its because of corporate greed ,.

B1 drivers i dont know about H2 but i live in a border town in Texas and there is a lot of companies looking and prefer B1 drivers cause of the savings they generat. At the same time they can afford cheaper freight and ones 1 company accept a cheap load brokers will keep that price forcing others carriers to do the same. It is definitely a big problem.

What really concerns me about hiring any foreigner as a professional driver is the lack of any vetting of their previous driving experience. At least most people who obtain CDL’s as native born American are familiar with the rules of the road because we grew up here and most likely have driven cars for awhile before ever getting our CDL. But even if a foreigner has driven cars in their home country before coming here to get their CDL, what do they really know about day-to-day driving here, beyond what they learned in CDL school? I’ve seen videos of just how insane the drivers are in some of these third world countries. It doesn’t give me a whole lot of confidence that a foreigner will come here to drive with safety instilled as a habit or as a priority.

This makes me angry. It's "labor dumping" akin to steel dumping, or name your product X dumping. Market gets flooded with cheap ____ to drive prices down to take out competition, and then takes over the market into rising prices. This same thing was done and continues with the tech industry. Going all the way back to late 80's earily 90's to present. The typical lower/mid tier levels incomes gets decimated. They used to be good mid/upper middle incomes. The H-1B labor program that imports cheap and less skilled IT people who work for peanuts, living multiples in one bedroom apts, drove out competent skilled Americans and salaries down. To add insult to injury, those American IT workers had to go through the humiliation ritual of training their cheap foreign replacements in order to collect their severence package. This practice was in high gear when I entered IT in 1995. I was displaced by this practice early 2000's. Tens of if not hundreds of thousands were displaced by this over past 30 years. And now with the Internet of today (and of the 2000's) compaies can easily export/offshore the IT jobs so its a bidirectional displacement decimation. That's why your call centers are almost all offshore. I hope Trump's admin will put a stop to this practice for all industries.

If someone comes to the USA to drive commercially, they should have to speak, read, and understand the English language. They must be able to enroll in a certified CDL training program. Gain their CDL learners permit. Progress through the system, and eventually receive their CDL license. I am an American citizen, (born and raised) and that's how it was mandated for me to gain my CDL. As for how they are viewed by employers, is the employers business.

There are more CDL holders than there are seats......driver shortage is a farce. However a lot of drivers have bowed out of this industry due to the abuse that happens when they are in effect at the bottom of the food chain when in reality they are the revenue producing part of that food chain. Governments should stop bailing out the trucking industry. Allow the cards to fall where they may. Drivers will be far better off.

H2B visas are also used for hospitality workers. This was the original Visa my husband was on when he came here. The visas will not only go to trucking companies. Companies that use these visas also are responsible for paying to bring them over and I assume with trucking pay to license them. You are legally not allowed to pay visa workers less than American workers and if an American worker applying legal they have to hire that person if they have opening verses opting to hire a visa worker. Companies of course abuse the program and to a to certain extent it does suppress wages. I don’t see it as impacting that much but this market sucks.

As a driver you are hated everywhere you go. The garbage at parking areas the tailgating and now more beginning problems. You work the time to delivery to reload and brake downs for free telling you employers don't value your income losses.

When you factor in all the hours vs. what a driver is actually getting paid to do, two-thirds of the job is just volunteer work. That's how it is for over-the-road, anyway. Local is probably more akin to a traditional pay model.

With all the CDL drivers losing there jobs because of companies closing the government should not allow any foreign drivers! It is just another way of letting big mega companies eat up all the companies! Like what I heard a while back that a CEO of one of the Mega trucking company say! We do not want to be the biggest trucking company, we want to be the only trucking company!

The problem isn't with trucking the main problem is Americans don't know how to save money , for 3 years already all we hear is truckers crying about their not making money but yet salaries in trucking are anywhere from $70,000 to $100,000 so what's all the crying about. All truckers do is brag about their salaries but then on the flip side blow all their money and then cry trucking don't pay enough . Foreigners work harder save their money n advance in any industry they work in , the turnover rate in trucking as a profession is 50% , only 50% of drivers stay in the industry after 5 years so they have to do something to get enough drivers .

I don’t think there’s a shortage of qualified drivers. I think that there’s been a concerted effort to hold wages down. While there may be many motives politically for open borders policies, a consequence of those policies is downward pressure of wages. A truck driver has increasingly more regulations they must know and follow, and work long hours away from home. The wages have not kept up with inflation and inflation itself has added to downward wage pressures as independents and companies have to make adjustments to remain competitive.

I'm not a big fan of foreign driver recruitment for the specific reason that they aren't from here and they've got to learn this country the way a new driver born here would however I find it interesting that when you come up with the total number of visas available you're not quite there but you're almost matching the number of drivers that we lost through the Clearing House who had hot drug tests.... maybe a coincidence but it's the first thing that crossed my mind

maybe some nuclear verdicts against self insured mega carriers running inferior drivers is in order. self insured means you can hire and dumb ass that can hold a steering wheel. It also means when the jury awards someone 500 million dollars your company is fooooooked.

It has for a long while baffled me how many Canadian (occasionally Mexican) carriers I see bouncing around down in Texas and the East coast. And I talk to some of the drivers and they have been in the United States pulling loads for six months without going back to Canada. That has bothered me to no end, and I think they need to do something about it. I think all Canadian/mex based trucks ELDs should flag dot vio and shut down all driver and carrier status changes and login/outs - until they go back into home country. But what if their truck breaks down or they have a load delay! Cool, post the load on the boards (that youre also scalping from) for a partial rate and take your butt back where you’re supposed to be. Swift Just recently doubled their hiring quota for transmex.
