@Mohel Skinberg Let's begin with the fact that the vast majority of institutional abuse in the world yields no reparations. So they for many years were not in any way expecting this outcome. Secondly, if we lived in a world in which people enjoyed being abused for a paycheck, there wouldn't be any call for ending capitalism. Thirdly, I strongly suspect there are some sadistic rich people around who would be willing to abuse you for decades and then at the end of it, give you a large paycheck. Maybe put out an ad for that on the internet and you too could receive your payday. The purpose of reparations is not "payment for services rendered", but a part of an apology and hopefully, an indication that the intentions of the perpetrator have now changed for the better, so that this doesn't happen again.

Thank you Eva and Thank you Amy. I lived in Manhattan when this happened. It really was frightening as a young woman with a little boy, who visited that Park regularly. It comes as a shock that they didn't even know each other! I'd imagine Trump was doing what he did as a distraction from his last debacle or crime he was constantly in the papers for, but there was more to it. There was a huge campaign of fear over AIDS in NYC (and Gays), and they exploded headlines with HERPES (something 90% of the population carries dormant or otherwise) . Homelessness had exploded and people were sleeping on the sidewalks, and park benches. It was a total culture of fear the NEWS and Trump created, along with the crime of what happened to that poor woman. Not long after Hillary Clinton was on every air wave screaming "Super Predators" about "gangs of black teens", with police stopping and frisking people all over. Eva is correct about the Culture of it all. He should be sued for slander saying still that they are guilty also! I'd imagine they want to live their lives in peace, but it's truly disgusting that people really don't understand who they are backing and the lives he's crushed. When the pile is so high I'm dismayed. Blessings and apologies for believing the lie because of "the confessions" to those men/boys. My heart goes out to them.

This series was not true. The group had various involvement in a number of very violent acts that night. Just because America is a hideously racist country does not mean young thoughtless men don’t commit terrible crimes. In particular Ray Santana was constantly named as the leader of this who led these other young men into following his sick instincts. Just because psycho Reyes committed a rape hardly exonerates Santana. We have focused solely on the rape of a white woman while ignoring that Santana was on a path of increasing violence primarily directed towards the minority community. The series is a dramatic interpretation that is a serious distortion of the truth.

Plenty of "impactful" fictionalized scenes. I've noticed this interview from Democracy Now isn't the least bit interested in the actual videotaped confessions which are not only in stark contrast to their portrayal here but are overwhelming in their similarity of who did what when and where. There were 37 boys questioned about what happened in the park that night with two of the five having been arrested in the park following multiple 911 calls stemming from the violent assaults of at least seven other victims. A gross misrepresentation of facts is far too kind to the litany of lies in both this interview and the Netflix series. They were never "exonerated". Four of them gave detailed and matching accounts of who did what and when. Kory Wise made a second videotaped statement BY HIS OWN REQUEST implicating himself. While he didn't have a parent present, he was 16 therefore it was not required. Yusuf Salaam lied to the police about his age and claimed he was 16 backing up his story with a forged form of ID. when it was revealed by his mother that he was younger, the questioning stopped immediately. The initial arresting officer was black. The prosecutor wasn't even at the precinct the first night. The suspects apprehended afterward were named by persons arrested in the park.The term "wilding" is taken DIRECTLY from the testimony of the kids in the park that night. There were four black jurors and three Hispanic jurors at their trial. Kory confessed to at least three other people beside the police. All of their convictions were held up on appeal. With them, the city of New York settled not tried, in their lawsuit as was promisedby the Bill DeBlasio campaign. There was no overturning of their convictions. The list goes on and on. It would be nearly impossible to believe that anyone not skeptical of the contents of this interview had ever seen the actual videotaped statements of the boys. Even if they were innocent of the assault on Tricia Meili, to attribute malice to the prosecutors and police in the wake of all of the crimes committed in the park, on that night, by this specific cohesive group accompanied by their matching accounts of her assault requires desire to do so out of prejudice. God bless everyone involved both the victims and the assailants. I have no interest in anyone's suffering. What we should all be interested in is the truth. It is absolutely wild how easy it is to get someone to lie, misrepresent or at least suspend any and all skepticism when turning a blind eye if it gives them a sense of self-satisfaction.

I was raped at gunpoint around the same age as these young men were being convicted of raping someone. I happened to be raped by a black guy but it had nothing to do with his race. They were lenient on him and saved him from his abusive family. While I was watching this, I realized that it was testimony to the police that allowed them to be lenient on him. Before he raped me, he told me how he had gotten beaten at home and the police caught him in large part because of a large scar he had on his head from the beatings. I told the police that he had been beaten and that probably saved him harsher treatment. Looking back on it all and understanding now what I never even thought about then in regards to systemic racism in the justice system, I'm glad they were lenient on him. I have also learned that it's hurting people who hurt people. Having been hurt is not an excuse for hurting others, but it is a reason and it's a good reason to give rapists counseling just like they give rape victims counseling. If we can stop the cycle of violence, that is when justice really wins. I want to personally apologize to these men who were imprisoned and robbed of their youth at such a young age. Although I was only nine at the time, it's people who look like me who have perpetuated the systemic racism we still see today, some of us without being aware of our unconscious biases and some being fully aware of their biases. We all need to start seeing each other as people and stop dividing each other for the purpose of setting our group above another. There was an old saying that I heard back when I was a Christian that went, "There, but for the grace of God, go I." Any one of us could become a victim. Any one of us could be charged unjustly with a crime. Any one of us could even have a moment of indiscretion and commit a crime. We are all humans and we are all susceptible to the frailties of our species. I am so sorry that these guys had to suffer so much because of the injustice of our systemic racism and I pray that one day we will all be able to look one another in the eye and see each other as being fellow living beings. Until that day, we must apologize and be forgiving of our human weaknesses.

Yeah, seem totally just and reasonable. Have you tried just googling for another side of the story. Say there's plenty interviews with Eric Reynolds - arresting officer. Who happen to be black btw.

@@mrstashaleger6085 they were falsely accused by who? By police? Or by 30+ other kids many of whom pointed at those 5. Actually at 8. They were not exonerated, their convictions were "vacated", that means retrial was possible. Because Reyes' confession might have made those 5 men's convictions lighter. Two of them in 2002 admitted to other beatings, while denying the rape. Jogger always knew there was someone else who raped her. She'd just never would be sure whether those 5 are innocent. And that opportunity is taken from her and from CP5 by DA Nancy Ryan who's declined retrial in 2002. That might've cleared them. And now CP5 act as if they're innocent and haven't participated in any assaults. And partiicpate in harassment campaign against Feirstein without any layers or jury. Victims of injustice don't act this way. They don't voluntarily sign settlements saying "police did nothing wrong" to later claim they were maliciously coerced and evidence was messed with.

Is this the end of the 400 year period spoken of in the bible? you could be right because Donald Trump, easily one of the worse, if not the worse president, is doing so much nonsense; if you follow biblical history, the Most High usually rile up people before He destroys them. He hardened Pharaoh's heart to prevent the Hebrews from leaving Egypt and then He stirred him up to follow them after releasing them with the sole intention of killing him. History repeats and America is the new Egypt, and Trump the new Pharaoh; Trump has hardened his heart against people of color, including these five brothers and he is imposing or seeking to impose America's will on every landmass around the world. Only time will tell of course because God's timeline is far different from ours; but I hope you are right.

must everything look and sound like format 'hollywood' .. Oh wait it's Netflix ! However kudos to all such efforts (big and small) .. to expose the apartheid that (still) exists in America...

If you have not done the crime DO NOT ADMIT TO IT no matter what pressure the police put on you!!! I understand this is difficult especially given their ages but they needed to stand firm no matter what.

You can get a child to admit to anything given enough pressure. Maybe you should admit that police is in some cases a band of criminals

Seems like to me, the 5 boys told different versions of the confession to investigators....seems like they would be able to look at the differences in each of their stories and see that something doesn't add up.

It's easy for you to say stand firm no matter what. You have never been tortured. Even Esau (Genesis - Jacob/Esau) sold his birthright due to hungered and he was an adult. These teenagers was interrogated without food for hours. Put yourself in his place and you will say whatever. This system of injustice is truly criminal.
@ald10505 жыл бұрын
@@ahbadan I agree with you that the torture is brutal and criminal but under no circumstances unless I was physically tortured would I even consider admitting to a crime I did not do.Just my point of view

Nope, police believed other 20+ kids pointing to those ones. And believed those ones when they've incriminated themselves and each other. I just don't get it. Do we need to believe minorities or not believe minorities? Believe kids or don't believe kids?

Is this an interview or a promo for the series? I mean they say the name of the series at least once every 5 minutes, showing clips and the logo of the series all the time. - That seems anything but serious.

Alll presidents past and future have a shady dark past. This had nothing to do with the president past or present. This has everything to do with community standards. People try to keep the people in your local judiciary honest as you can. Whistle blowers come forth sooner rather than later.
