It wasn't until I went to Daytona International Speedway and saw the banks of the turns that I actually appreciated NASCAR. But it wasn't until I heard Travis Pastrana explain the insane details of NASCAR did I even begin to get the picture!

NASCAR racing at the national level (the 3 big series you see on TV) is all about driving a very shitty racecar (very heavy, very powerful, almost no downforce, no telemetry, etc) on the very limit. It's like if there was a motocross series that forced everyone to ride 2-stroke twinshocks. Even if you use modern technology to build them very well and to make them very manageable... it's still a 2-stroke twinshock dirtbike. NASCAR is the car equivalent of that. Once you get to restrictor plate racing, what they do in Daytona & Talladega, it becomes a drafting game. Your driving skills don't really matter (you only have to control the wobbles air will cause) but you need to know your opponents and what the wind is doing very well. Depending on the wind direction and speed, the inside line will be the best, the outside line will be the best or both will work about the same. You're not full throttle all the time because that will make you hit the next car's rear bumper... but you also can't hold back too much or else either you lose the train or someone hits you from behind or someone changes lane and passes you. It's stupidly mental, the closest thing to restrictor plate racing is maybe road cycling when echelons happen due to strong crosswinds.

The "turn left" mockers confuse me. It's a door-slamming, aero-sensitive, three-wide 500-mile bullfight around the "perfect circle." It's not an 80 mph cruise. Note: Daytona & Talladega shouldn't be the tracks we are focusing on if we want to talk about the complexities of stock car racing in America. It's the bullrings at Bristol and Martinsville, the high line at Homestead and the Darlington stripe.

LMP drivers go through corners 1000+ times I. 12-24 hour races in a lot of races just fine as well. And the drivers don’t cry about retaliation for a small fender bender by accident. Even the announcers talk about if the driver is getting it or not and they don’t even care. Do that in F1 or GT3/GT4 racing and they’re banned. And to boot less precision is required of them. No complicated corners really or tight chicanes. I’ll like to how they fair at COTA. I bet you they open up the track limits A TON for them so they don’t have to turn as much. I can see them being allowed to straight line the esses and run way wide at turn 17 and 18. And oh I bet they’ll he allowed to straight line 15 and 16 as well.

@@AtMyOwnPace10 endurance racers also aren't going at 200mph every corner bumper-to-bumper at 2 wide in cars with very low downforce and virtually no driver aids. And it requires a ton of finesse to keep those slippery ass cars from spinning out at such high speeds with such variable airflow. The racing at COTA was pretty great, they opened up track limits because they were going 5 wide and have 16 more cars on the grid than in F1. Kimi Raikkonen and Jenson Button participated in that race (yes, NASCAR) this year and neither even made the top 15, but you probably thought it would be easy for them to beat a bunch of "rednecks" driving "shitboxes".

@DanArnets1492
@DanArnets1492 3 жыл бұрын
Rallying is easier than you think. It's not first time on that road, you actually go down it 2-3 times with a streetlegal car before the clock starts ticking. They know exactly where they're going. You do it once at SLOW speeds (sometimes even slower than the speed limit) while telling your co-driver what he should tell to you during raceday. "6 left... narrows. Next one is 5 right but has good banking, write 5 plus...". Then you go down again once or twice (still with traffic being allowed on the road) but at the speed limit or a bit over it with your co-driver already calling the notes. You're silent except to tell your co-driver to change a note. Once everything is right and you already know the stage quite a bit, then you race. Top teams then have "ouvriers" (openers) that go through the stages hours before the roads are closed. Why? To check out on wet patches, ice patches, new bumps on dirt parts... They have your notes and will call you to alert you of anything new you might find. If you trust your ouvrier enough, you might even tell him to suggest you changes if they see something being really wrong.

On that quote that says “they are the best and smartest drivers” here’s the thing. You’ve never heard the feedback a F1 driver gives back to his engineers. @@chrisclifford4109 unquestionably? That is nonsense. Their is ONE key skill in driving that matters the most...and that is feeling the limit of the tires. Modern stock cars develop this skill more than any other because they are under tired and over weight. They handle TERRIBLE. Look at AJ Allmendinger when he was in the Forsyth Indy Car. That was the first and only Indy car he drove that was properly set up for him...and he nearly won the title. He kicked ass. How did he do in Nascar? Not great. Why? Because AJ could not adjust his technique from corner to corner. He just did not have the subtle skills needed. I raced AJ in karts a LOT...and when he went to NASCAR I was so sure he would kick ass. He never did. There is a LOT of skill in diving cup cars just because of how long you are in the turn, and how hard it is to get most out of those tires.

It was such absurd arrogance that RC was just going to be NASCAR driver after he retired. All those guys started driving when they were 10 years old...or younger...and have spent their whole lives learning to feel the tires working through their hands and the seat of their pants. Learning that feel takes thousands of hours in a car. That and Cup cars are the worst handling cars on the planet...and you have to adjust your driving style at every corner. Cup drivers are VERY good just because of how poorly the cars handle. They are VERY hard to drive fast.

@phouse8manable
@phouse8manable 3 жыл бұрын
@@griffinfaulkner3514 I think a lot of people don't realize that with single seater racing, the vast majority of the time the driver is actually racing against the track more so than his opponents. I can lose a tenth here in this corner, but I'll make up 2 tenths in the next, etc. While in stock car racing a tenth mistake stays with you almost the entire lap with almost no chance of recovering, all other things being equal.
@Ninja98x
@Ninja98x 3 жыл бұрын
@@phouse8manable to add to this, one of the big differences between NASCAR (or most oval racing) and something like F1 is the way you're forced to race against your opponents. There is nothing on the planet that can match an F1 car, period. But the thing with F1 is, you're trying to run your fastest possible lap and following your ideal line, and only occasionally do you deviate from that to race wheel to wheel with someone. You can spend an entire race after lap 1 basically by yourself, running laps and having lapped cars move out of the way for you. But in NASCAR, you're forced to run a suboptimal line so often that basically it doesn't matter how fast you can run a lap by yourself if you can't also find the fastest way around someone. It's the nature of racing on any track that when you try to pass someone or stop someone from passing you, you WILL lose time from it. In F1 that might mean you finish 9 seconds off the podium vs 7. But in NASCAR it's so tight that one wrong choice can have 12 cars pass you by and leave you hung out to dry for multiple laps. Even if you're faster than the cars in front, you've got to pass all these cars back and also your tires are likely more worn because you pushed so hard not to lose time and this will hurt you significantly in 35 laps from now, and you may have even picked up marbles to boot, making your job even harder. I'm a longtime NASCAR fan who has basically given up on the sport because of the bullshit manufactured drama they've resorted to, but I still have the utmost respect for the driver skill, the teams, engineers, and all the effort and money that goes into a NASCAR Cup team.

People would however be interested in watching real production cars (modded for safety purposes) race around in circles. They can play games with the rules and racing formats all they want but this will never lead to as successful a following they used to have. Old Chinese proverb race on Sunday buy on Monday believe it or not could once again ring out. People want to see THEIR car out there NOT a fiberglass sticker bombed watered down race vehicle. The time is now the current lineup of American muscle on lots today has more than sufficient HP. If this is done/figured out soon it will be too late. Why you ask? Electric vehicles are on the horizon, best of luck getting the target audience enthused there (don’t believe me? watch Harley Davidson E bike sales lol).
