The thing about photovoltaic transistors is they burn out, (sometimes become brittle and break), so when you integrate them into a structure like this you are looking at considerable repair work, plus it's bound to be proprietary which means maintenance may be considerably behind in work load. Sunreef can yack and brag all they want but they haven't reinvented the solar cell.

I would like to see MORE of the perspective of a Super Yacht Captain, versus this rather simplistic walk around. I would also like to see more of the engine room and the electric motor operations. I would also like to see the boat out on a test cruise and see how the sails and electric motors all work together. As far as the Solar it comes across as rather "gimmicky" to me, which is a salesman's dream as they usually over hype this so-called tech as being something you need and what separates them from say Silent Yachts. I want to see if the solar is REAL and does it really work as advertised. IS the solar on the hulls and the mast realy worth the extra cost. Do they really provide a significant amount of energy over the normal roof top panels, like on the Silent Yacht boats. What about the Water maker and water capacity? Does it have a generator back-up and how is that integrated into the system, like Silent Yachts does? Again, what is your impressions and feedback as a Super Yacht Captain?

This reminds me of Lamborghinis self-healing car where sensors are built into the structure to identify stress points and fractures and repair them. Likewise using the energy from braking to charge batteries. There's a lot of automotive technology making its way onto motor yachts especially the look and feel of the helm. I would like to see an owner-operator live-aboard, cruising version of this catamaran with galley up. No bigger than 50-55 feet with remote docking for single-handed docking.

As solar panels degrade over time whats the expected life expectancy on these panels? over how much degradation is expected as they age? up to a 25 year warranty is common for most panels but i'd expect replacing these is next to impossible with how they are integrated.

Solar panels have very long lifespans - no moving parts. They should (in theory) last forever unless you damage the substrate they are bonded to. What happens is that old panels just tend to be heavier, less efficient and were more expensive. Its safe to say that a majority of the panels that have been deployed in the world are still in use.
@polarbear4612
@polarbear4612 Жыл бұрын
Most solar panels today have a warranty of 80% after 25-30 years. In practice many panels will still produce 80% of their initial power rating after 40 years. So basically they last as long as the boats do. But… I don’t know if being in a marine environment will reduce these estimates. Only time will tell.

@badsamaritan8223
@badsamaritan8223 Жыл бұрын
because it's dumb. How are you going to remove that when it reaches it's EoL? You can't, it's epoxied to the hull, and the boat will either get scrapped, or some idiot will sink absurd amounts of time into the process of de-laminating them, so they aren't carrying around thousands of pounds of dead weight. If your boat can't run on a simple solar canopy, then you need a smaller boat.
@michaelmargolies
@michaelmargolies Жыл бұрын
@@badsamaritan8223 I can see your point of view (without calling anyone dumb) but they do not have to be lamented to the hull, just because that's how some are choosing to do it right now. I've worked with solar for years in many applications. Almost daily there are improvements and reductions in size and thickness. I've had solar on three houses, Usually on raised cumbersome brackets. In my latest install the panels slide into slots like a pullout tray in a cabinet and all run even if there is a panel failure in the grid. They are only 1-inch thick panel, bracket and all, They tolerate heat better than older planes, produce 30% more power than my last install,, and are hurricane rated. Last, I don't dictate the power use requirements of others, no one has to do it my way nor do I need to do it the way someone else thinks is enough for them. To each their own, live and let live.

Patenting solar panels on a product marketed to be sustainable is disingenuous. Every company has to put R&D time, effort, and dollars into adding solar regen capabilities, and now this company has made it impossible (or a considerable? cost) for every boat builder to integrate solar panels. If anyone is wondering why does innovation and human advance take so long and cost so much, here is the reason. It's not just companies like Sunreef, who HAVE to do this because if they don't - someone else will. Tesla open-sourced almost all of their battery tech in order to spread adoption, and I think that if Sunreef wants to enjoy a marketing edge, they need to consider making their IP freely available to others (perhaps with a discrete Sunreef embossed label or similar). The system is screwed: It isn't fair to Sunreef (who might well see a backlash - like this note), it isn't fair to other companies that want to be sustainable, and it isn't fair to consumers.

@@WelshVilliageDad far more than that -- but only on the side facing the sun. Its just a reflection (pun intended) on how cheap solar panels are these days that they can put them on both sides knowing only one will get good sun at a time. The real "virtue signal" would be if they didn't need that power to run the hotel circuits and put them there anyway. That is the "silver bullet" of this sort of design.. can they run totally off solar when at anchor. Its a sailboat, so without the sails blocking the arrays can it run without Generators. If it can then there isn't any virtue signaling. That is the part critics of solar boat designs miss - the idea is to be able to run without a generator most of the time. Not ALL of the time, or if motoring a long distance. That is why Silent has mainly stuck with the 60/55 foot floating condo. (which usually won't have crew)

I don't think it's a good idea to integrate the solar panels into the mast. A mast is always working and is therefore under load. Solar panels cannot withstand this in the long term if they are firmly glazed into the mast. So this is more marketing than useful. The same applies to solar panels that are integrated into the sails. That's just as nonsensical because it doesn't last in the long run. The solar panels on the side walls don't convince me either. It may be that water also reflects sunlight, but the weight to benefit ratio may be questionable. If it was of much use, then many more yacht manufacturers would do it. I also wonder whether the material in which the solar panels are encased remains permanently transparent. Because in the video they said it's not glass, so it's probably going to be some form of plastic. Unfortunately, the video lacks any real technical data that backs up the marketing claims with useful technical material.
