The 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the 2023 World Championship match, or, if Magnus decides not to play the match, the two players who will battle it out for the title. There is also a €48,000 top prize at stake. The venue is the Palacio de Santoña, Madrid, from June 17th to July 4th. If players tie for 1st place there will be a playoff on July 5th. No draw offers are allowed before Black's 40th move.
The players get 2 hours for 40 moves, then 1 hour for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment only from move 61. A playoff will feature two 15+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 3+2 blitz games. If still tied the players will keep playing single blitz games until one of them wins. If more than two players tie for 1st there will be a mini round-robin. Official website: worldchampionshipcycle.fide.com

Duda is really a great player, he has amazing insights and ideas. His problems are all those singe moves he misses. He just keeps getting great positions and messes them up. If he manages to work this issue out, he has potential to reach 2800 and become a worthy challenger. Happy to see him winning today.

hey agadmator i think the pause the video moments being too hard is a good thing it really makes you think, if we wanted a puzzle to solve that matched our rank we could use the various sites that offer that, but with it being hard it is not only challenging but also has greater impact on how you feel and think like its way more shocking if the move being revealed was an absolutely insane one yknow what i mean love u

I like that the players are all going for it and taking chances and not playing it safe. It would be easy to avoid defeats in some of these games but the players know they have to catch up and thus are all taking risks.

1:19 "And now, of course, we will not be seeing this (b4 - Evans Gambit). It's 2022; it's too early for that.". Love that joke. Love it. And just perhaps, the year 2024 or 2025 will finally bring us 1. e4 e5 2. Qe2 at the GM level :). Kidding aside, I remember being a young teen in the late 80's, and most GM's snubbed their noses at the Italian game. I remember GM Ljubojevic playing it every once in a while, but it was pretty rare to see in a top tournament. Now, it's one of the most popular openings.

Of course, everyone knows that second is much more important this year in this Candidates than most, as there is a decent chance Magnus will not defend his title, allowing the second-place finisher to play in the World Title match against the winner of the tournament. Nepo v. Nakamura or Fabi would probably draw more interest than Magnus v. Nepo, which many might view as a boring repeat of last year. It would also be U.S. v. Russia for the first time since Spassky-Fischer.

My pet theory about Magnus' musings about not defending the title. There's very little money in chess. There's a clip where Hikaru describes in a more detail what happened when Alireza wanted more money for some tournament (maybe Tata). When he said 20.000 dollars, then I realized how small the prizepool of that tournament was. When they say "little money" you don't know (I didn't know) what little means. Is it 10K, 100K,...? So with that in mind, when Magnus said what he said, maybe it was a signal to his sponsors or would be sponsors and this is a part of negotiating tactic.

@@alpha007org But the championship match is the payday. Last time it was 2 millions, 1.2m to the winner, so I doubt that anyone will actually walk away from it
