‘Rook Endings’ was an invaluable resource, and considered definitive. Grigory Levenfish gave Smyslov the manuscript to check and died some time later. Smyslov edited it, checked all the variations, and published it as a co-author with Levenfish’s name first, saying that the work had in the main been done by Levenfish. Smyslov was above all a true gentleman.

@@maithevnesegirl6404 In addition to being World Champion, Smyslov tied for the top place in the Soviet Championship twice, and was a top-15 in the world for forty years. Not many people in chess history are more deserving.

Further evidence of "the Hand's" enduring and potent instinct: in 1976, at the age of 55, the genial champ played a 30-board simultaneous against a wide range of players at the storied Mechanics Institute CC in San Francisco, scoring 18-3-9. Following a local tournament in a nearby town the next day, he gave another display on 23 boards, with a result of 21-0-2. The draws went to one expert and one senior master. (Corrected Vasily's age - 55, not 65! Still, a pretty good workout, as it was probably a combined time of around 7 hours at the board(s).)

@@stantheman143 Yes, well, every chessplayer knows the devil is often in the details . . . but I was a competitor in the tournament, a team event, and kibetzed quietly at the simul. Our first board got one of the draws and another friend was a photographer/chess chronicler who captured those aspects of the event -- and served as Smyslov's interpreter too! Those were the days, before engines and online play . . . but there was nothing then that compares with Antonio!
@stephenpostle7779
@stephenpostle7779 Жыл бұрын
I played Smyslov in a 20 board simul in 1969. He was 19-0 with only me left. I was a pawn up in a rook and pawn endgame, but he’d written the definitive book on such endings. 😢. But what a gentleman!
@robertphillips93
@robertphillips93 Жыл бұрын
@@stephenpostle7779Your experience is vanishingly rare in memory, not only in time but by demographics -- mine began as part of the Fischer boom proper, in 1972. Was going to ask if you got Smyslov's autograph in your copy of Rook Endings, but my copy shows a first English publication in 1971 . . . so much of the material was probably very fresh in the author's mind . . . and so he stands in front of the young man at the last board, awaiting the next move, noting all the main roads and each hazard or roadblock . . . if I had survived that spotlighted examination without gross error, the champ would undoubtedly become a noble gentleman too! Thanks for the reminiscence.

The game itself was first published in the "64" journal and is somewhat known in Russia, because it was also published in the "Selected games" (1952) book written by Smyslov himself.

Gerasimov is a very common Russian surname, and K can well be the initial of a Russian name (say, Konstantin). It's very unlikely that Smyslov would have faced a player from abroad in 1935 (he would have been 14 or 15, and that was before the Soviet chess school really took off), so I'm betting on a Russian player, probably roughly his age.
