Thank you so much, agadmator, for this video and for all the others too, of course; I'm a Frenchman and my english is bad, the more, fan of chess yes, but just a low level, and no more practising; but still admiring the beauty of chess, especially really played games, rather than studies. I watch most of your videos, and the ones of your brother in law too. About this Alekhine Memorial 1971: unfortunately for him, Spassky was not in shape during this tournament; but, as I like dreams, I just imagine he could win his game against Stein like he had the opportunity, creating a immortal gem of beauty by the so lovely tactical finish he did not see. And then, Karpov would have been at the same time the ONLY winner of this memorable competition! Of course, Stein too was a great player, and it's just sad he died few years later already... Best regards.

Karpov was just the best at restricting his opponent from doing what they wanted to do, I love his style. It's not flashy at all, but he cuts you off from your plan and eventually you just suffocate in the position because he controls more space and you can't make any moves.
@marcjohn94045 жыл бұрын
@aDBo'Ch 1 Indeed he did allow a lot to Polgar, but that's just Judit Polgar. He allowed a lot to Kasparov too, basically because those two are so good that you can't just always restrict them. It's hard to take the initiative away from someone who is that good. I suspect he would have had issues with restricting Fischer as well, but we'll never know for sure.

If you know the rating of each of the players at the time of their game you should include it next to their photos. It adds a lot of value in recognizing the level of play of each player. The appreciation of watching a lower rated player either overtaking the skill level of a higher rated player or at least being more prepared to play that higher rated person.

Great choice of game for this video: that is the style with which Karpov conquered the world and remained for such a long time at the top.
@richardfeynman55605 жыл бұрын
A great game by Karpov in his typical positional style! Karpov is, in my humble opinion, without a doubt one of the greatest but also one of the most misunderstood players in the history of ches I Think people sometimes tend to underestimate him, despite the fact that he was World Champion for ten years and won lots of tournaments, remember for example his impressive performance in Linares 1994. And there still remains the question why Fischer didn't play against Karpov in 1975? Could it be that Fischer was afraid of Karpov? It wouldn't have been so easy for Fischer to beat Karpov as it was against Taimanov, Larsen, Petrosian and even Spasski. So there was some chance that Fischer could have lost his title in 1975. I think Fischer would have played against a weaker challenger, but Karpov would maybe have been the toughest opponent Fischer had ever faced in his career? Has anybody some thoughts about this?
@themanwithnoname31454 жыл бұрын
Fischer wasn't scared to face karpov, the fide didn't agree with him on the terms he wanted the match to be, and he could have won by a vote and if he did, he would have played karpov for the rules whoever wins 10 games, wins the match, but the Soviets didn't want this so they worked hard against fischer and eventually he lost and he didn't want to play, but karpov couldn't even touch fischer, fischer was an engine, in his later match with Boris spassky I think 1992, he would play literally perfectly and he was just a super strong player even after retiring chess, he also claimed that karpov and kasparov were faking games and he had written alot of books exposing them but claimed that all his books were stolen by the Jews. But I genuinely doubt fischer was scared of karpov, the same thought was said that fischer was scared to face Boris spassky, but he just wanted high demands and after all said and done, he really won the match easily.
@pbswapno4623 Жыл бұрын
Fischer beated world champions like Tal, Petrosian and Spassky. He was never afraid to face Karpov. And I'm pretty sure he could have won if he played the next championship with proper preparation.

When did kasparov say he favored karpov? I would like to see that. Ive heard Kasparov favoring Fischer as a goat contending to himself and Magnus, but not karpov. If they faced in 1975 then I think Fischer would be just to strong. Fischer is the player who was the strongest between him and his peers. Official chess record with rating gap between him and the n2, 60 points more than Magnus was to Caruana for an example. Also Fischer had higher accuracy of moves recommended by the engine than any1 in history according to a study with the engine rybka made in 2008, and this is amazing since this was in late 60s, early 70s and still higher than Karpov, Kasparov and Kramnik with more developed theory etc. Fischer is probably the best player in his prime of all time, but the greatest career goes to Kasparov.
