Last year, we got a new principal at my high school that was instantly insanely hardball on all the rules. Which, okay, maybe they need to be enforced a bit more, but she changed them. Oh, previously you couldn't have holes in your jeans two inches above the knee? Now you can't have holes at all. Oh, you can't wear bandanas because they're considered gang affiliation? Well now you can't wear red or blue at all. A bunch of the girls in school had bought those super ripped up jeans from American Eagle before we went back to school, and it made a bunch of people angry considering that was their new school wardrobe. I hated them anyway, and they looked stupid, so it didn't effect me as much, but I myself had purchased some jeans that year with a bit of razoring done at the top so I was kinda mad myself considering it's hard to find jeans in my small town without "blemishes". Anyway, it got to a point where they would literally stand outside as the buses pulled in and call people out for holes, for wearing crocs (that was another one), and for the whole color thing. At this point, the ISS room was full, so they started having to keep them in the auditorium. They literally sent out the *school basketball team* for wearing red and blue basketball shorts. And those are literally our school colors. At this point, we had made the local news because one girl was angry that she got suspended after calling her mom in the bathroom to ask her to bring more clothes (no phones allowed, so they suspended her). Then, after the whole "color" situation, we all got together and said we were all going to wear as much stuff as we could that broke the new rules. I remember wearing a red shirt, my razered and ripped blue jeans, and white shoes. Looked like a normal outfit, sure, but whatever. A few other people went very over-the-top and wore crocs, red/blue basketball shorts OR the super-ripped American Eagle jeans, and red or blue shirts. Eventually, the principal had to stop all the nonsense and let us go back to our old ways, so no one got in trouble even though everybody came to school dressed "inappropriately". Also, side note, while all of this was going on, the hallways smelled like straight-up weed and the neighborhood crazy lady came to school and stood in the hallway dancing, swinging her shoes in the air, and singing the Fat Albert theme song. But, ya know, dress code is more important.

My story: In 7th grade, we had 3 fights in one week So the teachers decided to treat us like kindergarteners, even though only a couple of us out of 150 kids fought! We had to never talk, follow the lines to lunch, and we weren’t allowed to go to lockers. So the next day, The whole 7th grade wore orange shirts and wrote an ID number on it saying that “they were prisoners and school was a prison”. Some of them even got ICE! After that experience I learned to things: 1.they CAN ICE everyone 2. Protesting only made the teachers hate us more and give us more rules. But it did make force them to be “nicer” because our protests made the school look bad.

In ms Japanese class, we learned that if you walk up to a Japanese person and say "are" (a•reh) that they'd say are back. You could do this with them for *hours.* So one day, our teacher told us we had a pop quiz, and some girl looked at the guy next to her and said "Are?" The Ares spread all throughout the classroom. We all got louder everytime the teacher told us to be quiet in English. It got so loud that the Japanese classroom from next door did it too, and then the classroom down the hall. One of the teachers ran down the hallway (we could see her from the door window) trying to figure everything out. Long story short: none of the Japanese classes had a pop quiz again

Wow, I can finally tell this story. Okay, so my high school was once the biggest in the US. In fact, my graduating class was the largest one for a while until the record was broken years later. My school was considered an experiment run by the school's principal. He ran it so well that he developed his own psuedo cult of personality and every student, teacher and staff member at the school respected and loved him (as far as I and the other students could tell). In that school district, you could only work for a maximum of 35 years. He had been in other schools before then, but he was finishing his 35 at my high school. Well, the entire student body said "Fuck that. We aren't losing the only guy who legitimately gives a fuck about us and is able to make our lives here bearable." Someone planned a walkout in between classes to the school football field a month in advance, and it gained so much traction that even the teachers were being ordered to convince the students not to do it. There were over 5,000 students. They literally couldn't get us all. Needless to say, the teachers weren't getting through to anyone. Even the seniors, who had everything to lose and nothing to gain were in on it (context: I was a junior at the time). The day comes, and right before the walkout happens, the principal himself gets on the PA system and implores us not to walk out. Whenever we heard him talk, he was always confident and happy, but here, he sounded like we had put a gun to his head. Only three students walked out to the football field (probably those who desperately wanted to use it as an excuse to skip), and they were promptly given recompense. After the principal hears this, he gets back on the PA system and he's clearly overwhelmed with the love we just showed him, and promised that he would find a way to stay longer at the school. He did. He was able to get a brand new 35 year contract, and when I graduated the year after, he gave us a great speech. Don't know if he's still there now due to age, but I'll never forget that moment, or that principal. Edit: I just read that he retired this year. He was getting on in his years. Edit 2: thanks for all the likes! I forgot to mention that in senior year, he actually signed my yearbook. He was really cool about it.

The last week of school, every year, we had this little tradition called fight week. I learned about it when I entered into six grade. Apparently, kids all over the school would get into fights with whoever they had beef with. Since so many kids were fighting, they couldn't fit all of us into detention.

They stuck us all in a breakout room for detention when everyone refused to listen to the history teacher give a lecture on something (I forget, I wasn’t listening) and the teacher went in the main room to get the principal. Bad idea on their part. I just rallied everyone and we all the call just as the principal joined the room. It was hilarious. Most of the kid’s parents sided with the kids because the last lecture given in this class had been over two hours long and caused us to miss our next class.

The sub couldn't send all of us to detention after I inadvertently started a revolution. I had the strictest sub in my history class that made us ask to do even the smallest thing as blowing one's nose. I finished what I had to do and started to do my math homework when the sub yelled at me for not asking first and took away my calculator. My friends retaliated and started to talk back/yell at the teacher to where everyone joined in and basically started chanting "calcu-lution" (calculator revolution). Students started to then grab out their own calculators to which the sub confiscated everyone of them. The sub quieted us until the class started performing little skits like dropping their pencil on the ground and making a big scene about it saying "wait! you forgot to ask the sub to get the pencil that you can reach with your foot!" Students were still revolting so he then started to take phones then started to threaten detention after he sent the kid who first took out a calculator, in retaliation to mine being taken, to the principles office. Because everyone was in on the revolution now, he either had to send us all to the office for detentions or just give me back my calculator so I could work on my math homework with the now ten minutes we had left in class. The sub caved and I got my calculator back.

One girl decided she should try something funny. She hid beside the doorway and the whole class was quiet as we waited for the teacher. We all pretended to do our work, and as our teacher walked in the girl hiding jumped out, yelled, and scared the crap out of our teacher. She dropped the printing and the whole class was laughing. In 6th grade we had a no talking rule at lunch ( Idk why that’s literally the only time we get to talk ) and our dean would go so far as suspend someone for talking. There were weeks spent in silence sometimes. She had a megaphone that played a horrible noise too. She even bribed us with recess if we were quiet. Eventually we didn’t fucking care anymore and stopped believing her bullshit bribes and kept talking. It was CHAOS. And that’s how we learned they can put an entire grade in detention. I actually have one: When I was in grade school, there was this one history teacher everyone hated. And there was this one specific day that he decided to have a surprise test without giving any warning and it was a pretty important test. No one had studied for it and it was written no where on our notebooks. So, my class decided to take all of our history notebooks and show them to the principal saying that the test was never announced. Long story short, the test was post-ponned and the teacher got fired a few months later for doing worse things and it was said that he hit one of the students. We never got in trouble for that. This was a very long time ago but I still remember it like it was yesterday.

When I was about 14/15 in secondary school, on April fools there was a trending prank going around practically everyone’s snapchat from our school, that we should all set alarms on our phones for 10am and then put our phones in our lockers. A group chat was made with over 80 people in it, and it was all planned out. People who didn’t have lockers shared with other people, anyone who blabbed got blamed, and everyone would pretend the group chat never happened. April fools comes around, and everyone is fidgeting and exited in class. Teachers don’t know why but are worried and suspicious. A couple people in my class start quietly counting down. Then BOOM all these phones go off. All these different alarm sounds and vibration sounds all blasting, turns out loads of people who weren’t even in the group chat did it too. Must have been at least 150 people of all ages. The teachers all went out into the hallways to see what was going on and all the kids ran and grabbed their phones from their lockers. I don’t think anyone got in trouble either specially, only a couple got their phones confiscated, but the whole school got a lecture about it. Best moment of my school career.

Or teacher took us to this track right off of campus where we usually run and in an inspiring moment the whole class refused to run at all. We all just walked instead in a massive group and got around a 14 minute mile time. My teacher was threatening to fail all of us but then just gave up and left us out on the track. While after a while of walking no one knew what time it was so we all just walked back to school and got dressed back into our regular clothes and went to our next class. There was never any punishment for it and no one was failed. We didn't run the mile again at all for the rest of the year.

Second day at my new school. Our teacher hadn’t arrived because she had taken the day off to go visit her mom in the hospital. The sub hadn’t shown up either because no one had informed him to show up at that time and the office accidentally told him to be there at a later time and on top of that, said to come the next day. So that left about 15 sophomores alone. Without supervision. Or classwork. After 10 minutes of no sub showing up the class as a whole decided (as I sat there confused as shit because again, this was my second freaking day being there) to lock the door, not inform any teacher or the office we had no sub or teacher and we sat for the full hour and 30 minutes playing cards against humanity on our phones. One of the smart kids said we might get detention for it and legit one of the main people that pushed for us to go with the plan stood up and looked at him and said “what? You think they’d send all of us?” It was a small school. And they did. Apparently the following classes had the same bright idea and also locked themselves in the room and didn’t tell anyone. (Which was hilarious) So that totaled to about... eh, 45ish students doing absolutely nothing for that one class. We were told to arrive at school lunch detention for remainder of the 6 weeks. But since I was new. I got left off the hook. ;) So that meant I got a free lunch period to myself pretty much. It was nice.

Some jackasses in my gym class yelled at some of the faculty through the window, so the substitute told all the boys to stay after class. She scolded us and wouldn't let us leave until someone spoke up as to who did it. Once she realized that it wasn't happening, she let us leave *20 minutes after the next period started*, telling us that we would all be suspended for 1 month. Edit: We ended up not getting suspended because one of the girls told the dean who it was.

Grognak The Destroyer I HATE when that happens. When no one fesses up and everyone was punished. Back in 5th grade we would all play with, collect, and trade these little koala bear pencil toppers. They were adorable and I wanted one so bad. One day my friend from drama club finally got me one of my own. I treated that thing like most toys I had and still do because I have a little squad of beanie boos right now. I treated that thing like it was my baby. Sometime later after I cared for that little baby like a momma bear I had to go to a special class some of us had to help on our English skills. Which I still kinda suck at 😅. Another one of my friends decided to look after my koala while I was gone. When I came back she gave it to me with its head snapped off. I was devastated. I started crying as we tried to fix it. When the teacher came over to see what was going on and found out she asked the class “who broke J’s koala?”. No one fessed up so she banned us from bringing our koalas to class. I had a few theories about who did it. The first one is my friend who watched over it because she was in cahoots with a bully I had at the time. A few years later she said she only went along with it because said bully threatened her. Second theory was a boy who sat next to her and I absolutely HATED he was so annoying and he knew it. Final theory was the bully herself. Never found out who did it but I did end up fixing my koala. And a few years later I lost it.

There's this supply/substitute teacher that my entire class, and most of thr other classes, adored. Mainly because he kind of let everything slide on accident because he seemed a little clueless all the time and he always praised us, even if we did everything wrong and were terrible the entire class. One day, we have him in our math class and he hands us about five sheets all stapled together each. He told us to do as much as we could, but when we all looked at the paper (about ten minutes after he gave them to us), we all realised that there were no questions and half of the stuff that was on there was missing. So we all had this silent agreement that nobody would tell him, until about five or ten minutes after that, someone told him. We were all so annoyed, but then the teacher did nothing and just told us that there were. So now we had the perfect excuse for when our math teacher came back, we tried telling him but he wouldn't listen. Then we just talked or messed around for the rest of the class, and if course he praised us for the hard work we did.

My school handles detention on a set schedule with one woman in a counselor’s office. I used to be an assistant there (free credit for running passes). This woman is so wholesome and always jokes around with people even if they are in deep trouble. If they skip detention, she jokes some more, and that’s ultimately what makes them go. Between you and me, she even let some students off the hook that really didn’t deserve the detention :)

Once a once in a lifetime event happened and the teacher made us stay in for it. We all went out, saw it, and went home. All of us got in trouble, but it was the last day. I live in MI.
