Seems like the tip-off is that the black king is stuck behind its 3 pawns, so in that position if the black rook left row 8 for any reason it would be automatic mate in 2.

I remember reading a chess book which said to chose the most aggressive move. The reason on 17:02 you didn't see Q d5 is you viewed it as a Queen sacrifice. The back ranch mate threat from your c7 rook meant the black rook on d8 didn't threaten any piece on squares d1 to d7. This meant Q d5 is unthreatened from the black rook d8 but threatens both the d8 rook and checkmate, making it the most aggressive move. Your in good company, Petrosian, who had been World Champion 2 years before, when playing Fischer in the Candidates failed to see Fischer exchanging his knight for a 7th rank bishop, due to the back rank mate threat, would force Petrosian to either lose his Queen side pawns or allow 2 rooks on the 7th rank as happened in the game. (The move by Fischer was a shock to the surrounding Soviet GMs who all failed to see the difficulties caused by the back rank mate threat. The effectiveness of a back rank mate threat in neutralizing pieces tends to be underrated, even by Soviet GMs. )

I've not played chess for years. Used to play it all the time. But I'm glad that I stumbled upon your channel as its reawakened my interest. I'd forgotten how hard the game can be. But how sweet it can be if one can overcome its complexity at times. I never really felt that I was playing an opponent. I always felt that I was competing against my own intellectual limitations. I like your channel because you have plenty of energy, are clearly confident and able on a chess basis, and its cool that your parents are also super knowledgeable about the game. Especially your Dad it seems. That Belgian kid gave you a very tough game. Very close. And I agreed with you, your mum and Khoi that a stalemate was the most likely outcome. But I think one of the best things about life is that there is always someone who can see things that most of us don't. And that gives our lives, and our chess lives, greater potential. Which is nice. Well done the Cramling family and well done Khoi!

I found the queen sacrifice but its only findable when knowing that there is a win at the end of the journey as your focus is different and you search for strange stockfish moves. Otherwise no chance at all and having a clock ticking only supports going for a successful draw against this amazing kid! GZ

Nice recap! Definitely a strange outcome if no human could see the win, but the computer can! By the way, these stares you sometimes give the camera are what could be described as "taking no shit from anyone". I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one of those looks! Good luck!

Wow! I never played like that as a 1900 (except once, a last round against Ben Finegold, when he was still Benjy). Great defense on the kid's part, he played like a player swindling a draw against Tal. That would would make you - getting to Tal position - very good. The best I ever did was getting to Morphy positions - and Morphy had help from his opponents. If you two were titled, this could go in Informator.

if only she found THAT key move, Qd5!! eventually, the king ends up on a8, and black runs out of checks, and white queens the b-pawn next. i set up the position on lichess and stockfish quickly found that stunning move, and pointed out that white has to get the king to a8.

I enjoy how chess is like a level playing field perhaps like few others, in that it is no respecter of age, and the old and young and everyone else can counter any expectations based on age. I am fascinated to know how the younger chess players, or any chess players, reach such levels of expertise in a matter of a few years, though I guess even a 12 year old might have been playing chess for over 7 years?

While watching the livestream, I was sweating and saying "Anna, please take his knight with your pawn and take a draw!" for fear something would go wrong and you'd lose. It just looked too scary had you not taken his knight. It's easy for others to say you were winning like his dad with the help of Stockfish, but not for the players in the battle. The kid definitely could play. Still sounds funny, but no joke that kids are the most terrifying thing in chess. I'm curious too, what was for lunch? 🙂
