Restoration of Vintage 5-Ton Truck Jack
This #145 "Simplex" 5-ton truck & bus jack was manufactured in the USA by Templeton, Kenley & Co.. 1939 is the last year I can find it available in their catalog. This one may be older. The jack body and parts are made from drop-forged steel. It weighs 30 lbs. (13.6 kg) and it cost $10.00 in 1939.

Nicely done, sir. I remember my father had one of these in his pickup, solid, durable and could work forever with failing. Sometimes old school is the best tool.

Wonderful restoration. I too have a Simplex mechanical jack, of about the same era. Its smaller and came in a tools lot I bought some time ago. Plans are to restore it.

Actually, I know this as a railroad foot jack, as it was used by railroads in groups or gangs to lift trains back onto tracks since the foot could get under the wheels and also the various parts of the train trucks. My grandfather handed 1 down to my dad and I believe it is still at his house. They would lift like anything but were heavy as hell.

This model is a bit different than the railroad jack. They made a lot of railroad jacks, but their catalog refers to this one as a truck/bus jack. Very close though.

They DO make them like that but they're far from cheap! Simplex doesn't make that model but their ultra heavy duty jacks remain an industry standard.I grab any Simplex or Duff-Norton jack I can score (jacks are most effective in multiples to allow shimming one at a time).

I have used one of these before I remember that it was pretty scary letting it back down with alot of weight on it, if you weren't right on top of it with all your body weight it would spring back and hit you what a trip
