In today’s video, I’ll be discussing how some truck drivers don’t want a trucking job working 12hr shifts. What are your thoughts?

Honestly, all I take away from truck drivers is this; SOME complain, OTHERS work. SOME see it as a quick job and OTHERS see it as a CAREER/ opportunity to fund their education/ other goals. My advice? Do. Your. Own. Thing. ✌️

I’m 24 years old and a fuel hauler on pace to do 125k this year. I work 65 hours a week still go to the gym 4 to 5 days a week. And still have time to spend with my partner go on dates etc. Honestly it comes down to time management and if you want to make big money in trucking you have to actually drive the truck usually more then 40hrs 😂😂

I was looking at a job a gemini from 3pm-3am. Terminal was 45 min away. Say i get to sleep by 5am. 8 hours sleep, then wake up at 1 pm, leave by 1:30pm to make it there early in case of traffic. That would leave 30 min of free time. Somedays, they said it might be 14 hours shifts. 27hr plus over time after 40 maxes out at at $2300 is great money, but mire likely they said at least 60 hours, which would max out at $1900 gross. Still good money. You need to live within 30 min of a terminal realistically.

I was a yard jockey for my local grocery store warehouse. 10 hour shifts 4 days a week. If you wanna stay in the industry somewhat but don’t wanna work 12-14 hour days then look into being a yard jockey. You still touching trailers and some places require you to have a class A license because you might go off property to move trailers to a drop yard outside the property. You might not make that good of money but you most likely will not work 12-14 hours a day.

I'm going to give to a perspective as a terminal manager, who has also driven the truck for many years. This also applies to food service. THE REAILITY, if you want less than 12, You're likely going to be working less than 9. Which will average closer to 7-8 hours a day. Then USUALLY that same driver will complain about how little money he/she is making because they're used to making damn near 40% more see the loop? In many trucking jobs, these terms can be negotiated Also, a huge one is time optimization, 90% if truckers claim their personal optimization is perfect (as someone with real data this isnt true), yet those 90% take 12 hours to finish a certain run that only takes the other 10% 7-8 Hours to do. Some areas to look at to shrink that 12 down to less than 9. First one, how much time are you spending in the office in the morning, and night? Second one, How long is it taking you to pretrip and get everything ready for the day? Third, a huge saving in food service is How long is it taking you to get your trailer right? Ill use Anthony as an example, this choice to enjoy a nice walk and making this video probably added 30-45mins to the end of this day. Maybe your thing is enjoying a nice lunch somewhere these little time blocks do add up at the end of the day. That being said, I HIGHLY doubt people who are able to enjoy little chunks of the day are probably bitching about working 12 hours because theyre enjoying themselves.

That's what I worry about with this offer I have that would involve plenty of 12-14's once solo (5 days, not just 4), AND a 2-yr contract (for getting CDL with them). What's the point of being local if I'm still never home and am worthless when I am? Part of it is the area and terrain (which would be quite hazardous in the winter, mind you) and their far reach, I think. But see, I'm okay with not making the most money, especially if there's no time to enjoy the perks of it.

As a dump truck driver, a typical workweek is around 50-55 hours (OT after 40 hours). Occasionally we work over 12 hours daily and work over 65 hours weekly (including some Saturdays), and I totally sympathize with those against working 12 hour days. It can be a drag. But it does make for a good paycheck. To a degree you get used to working long weeks. Now if we go awhile only working 50 hours or less and then get slammed with those long days, it takes some acclimating. I would never work where I get paid by the load, and working those long days are spent sitting and NOT GETTING PAID.

You think it’s 12 hrs dnt break down or the truck be loaded backwards or traffic. Just depends what company you at on the time you spend on the road. I use to drive for coremark average 13 hours days depending on the route or the store manager with the count of the groceries. Had did 24 hr routes no layover but next day you off kinda depending on what time the next route start. Aye 10 hrs off that clock you back in the truck coremark molded me into a grinder in the food service industry. I start with Gordon’s next week 8-9 hr days too easy for me lol
@PrinceRevolver3 ай бұрын
I probably should have been more specific. When I say I run up the clock, I mean it. I can start my route as early as midnight if I want. Half of my stops depending on the day are key stops which knocks off a lot of time. Running up the clock for might be different for somone else. I get Monday, Wednesday and Sunday off. Which works for me. Friday is pay day and if I choose to work overtime on Wednesday, it's usually easy, and Sunday is time and half. So yes, I make good use of killing hrs w/o burning myself out.

Not even saying working long hours is bad. Unless you've done tree work or a couple seasons of wildland firefighting then... But trying to have a normal life with friends, family, and hobbies is kind of impossible without sacrificing your health on 12+ hour days. 4 days a week? Sure. I'm even good with 6 10s because even with a shift that long I still have ample time left in my day for other things. But 5-6 12+ hour shifts in a week?? Get out of my face😂 I'd happily go back into a seasonal job working those hours because i know it'd mean having months off of work in return. The nature of those jobs keeps you away from "normal life" things for a period of time anyway and then you get laid off and have all the time in the world to do whatever you want. Trying to enforce that lifestyle year round when people have families and whatnot is BS

A lot of jobs these days, require 12 hour shifts or more, at least if you want to make decent money. Unless you’re working some office job or small company type jobs or grocery stores. Those still do 8 hours. If it’s not for you or you have kids and all that then, you just need to find something else.

If you are driving 12 hr shifts an you drive 1 hours each way to an from work thats 14 hrs a day on a good day. You dont have a life or i dont anyway. That only leaves a man 10 hours i do it but i dont like it.

Being in different parts of the industry past 7yrs. When I was OTR that was probably the least hrs I worked, I usually was local working for the gov in public service positions driveing. I always worked more than 12hr days usually 16hrs +, I've had plenty of 18-20 hr days (not kidding) only get one day off if that. I've worked 45days straight with no day off!! Shitty pay but good checks cause massive OT. Yrs of this and the depts won't raise pay or accommodate time off for dr appts, family obligations, or even aggressive ly hire more drivers. I'm done and left like many others. I got same pay hr BUT only 40hr working at hospital for shuttle bus service. I have a life now after 7yrs.

People don’t wanna work 12hr shifts because we’re don’t get time & a half. It’s really stupid because we’re the only ones that don’t get time n a half

Just depends on the individuals personal goals or lifestyle; Commitments and family. Some people love working their life away behind a steering wheel because driving 12-14hrs a day excites them, why? I have no idea. To me it’s super boring and requires maybe 5 brain cells to perform. Others use it as a stepping stone to accomplish better career opportunities and education. Theres no work life balance in the industry and that’s the problem. It burns people out, well some people atleast.

Depends. Some of these jobs you can work 10 or 12 hours and make the same amount of money. That’s me right now i might make more money on a 9 hour day compared to a 11 hour day and i hate that TBH 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️

As a matter of "safety" one would think you don't want professional drivers working so much and being subject to fatigue. It's not about lazy (well not for some), it's about feeling good behind the wheel to do your job properly and safely. Not work and sleep and that's it. How do you tend to your mental health? Partake in social activities? Family activities if you have one? Gym or other activities if you're into it? And get proper rest? Kind of hard working 12+ hours a day

I rarely worked 11 hours as a forklift maybe 1 month during summer. But the rest of the months was 8-10 hours
