I once read a book called "looking away" by Harsh Mander and that was the first time I realised how desensitised the urban population has become to the everyday struggles of the poor. It is glad to see such issues being talked about.

My mom had to fire the Didi who worked in my house. She is young in age and in this profession to make friends or be a part of an union. She had a formula of taking maximum assignments from various houses, but owing to her malnutrition she couldn't work regularly in all of the houses. The absence rate in my house reached about half a month. My mom just couldn't manage anymore. It frustrates me how useless I was in this whole situation. Didi's husband was an alcoholic, she had two children of school going age. I can only pray for Didi and hope one day I become capable of helping in these situations

My mother starts feeling bad if doesn't serves them with Tea 😂. I often laugh at this (in a healthy way offcourse). She also gives then to eat whatever is there in the breakfast. She goes to the extent of making a breakfast for them 😂 out of her sensitive nature. My wife joins her too at times and iam told that Iam insensitive if I laugh at them both.

Wow. This is absolutely opposite of what I face. Since 1.5 years, we switched 3 maids because they don’t want to work. We never ask extra work, even gave her Diwali gifts, new year bonus, new utensils, and dress materials but still it brings them death to work. Didn’t even cut her salary because that extra 500 isn’t gonna allow me to buy a Mercedes. But I guess, Treating with respect is also a curse for me.

I absolutely agree. Although it is true that some homes are very disrespectful towards these women, most of them aren't. It's always easy to play the poor and weak game giving them a sweet spot to get attention. For example, let's talk about the maid at our house. She charges 6000 for cooking. Now we kept someone for cooking because we do not get the time to do it, right? We keep everything ready for her. We have even kept a separate maid for household purposes, so she doesn't even have to wash a single plate. But she likes to be absent 5 to 6 days a month without any notice. This puts a lot of pressure on us those days because we keep expecting her and at the end, we do not get to have breakfast before going to office because she comes at around 8. After 8:15 we start getting ready and leave the house at 9. It is physically not possible to cook and go to office within 45 minutes. So, after seeing this for 4 to 5 months, we decided we will give payment on daily basis, that is 200 a day. This aroused her and she came with a dozen of other women to quarrel with her. This is the condition. According to them, they get sick once a week. But about us, we have money we cannot get sick. 7 days max sick leave in office in a year for us, for them it's 72.

She learned a lot from my mom and sometimes even ready to work extra without question. During covid lockdown we keep giving her salary even she used deny taking it. Before leaving that place we gifted her old 30inch lcd tv instead of selling it online on olx. Till this date she calls my mom to ask how things are going on.

To go house to house and work as a help, in our society where only certain jobs hold value...there's always going to be a power imbalance. My mom is a private tutor. Goes house to house to teach kids. There is no respect in jobs like these. They can't treat my mom like they would their maid, but well she is positioned only a few rungs above in the ladder. Whats the deal with not riding on the same lift as the "madams"... if that is not untouchability...then what is?? Some people take themselves too seriously and really need to take a chill pill. If they can eat the food these maids prepare and stay in houses cleaned by them and wear clothes washed by their hands then whyyy?? We are at the end of the day all humans after all... a little empathy never hurt anybody. Not saying all maids are sincere with their work but discrimination and maintaining discipline are totally different things..

I am glad my family always took exceptional care of our maids. One of them died a few years back, she used to share all her troubles with me. We used to make sure she had breakfast and tea at our place before starting the work. I used to cook Paratha for her and eat with her on the same table. We treated her like a fellow human being, no abusive words, no overload of work and we would lend her money regularly. I used to give her dresses and fabrics that were good and any other household item that could help her. We even took her to doctor when needed and only if she went on a long leave we would deduct some pay. Any extra work she was paid extra and often she and I would do house cleaning together. Lot of other employers exploited or abused her verbally...and just because one family treated her with respect and care, she felt good about herself. She used to share lot of things about life from her perspective. She died because she was done with poverty and often said that she must die and be free...and she died of unknown medical condition. I pray for her that her next life is much better and full of joy and dignity. The least we can do is to be humane to another person and not have discrimination and too much expectations....this class of people have nothing in life except bare basic survival...atleast a sense of respect and care helps them live in peace despite poverty.

Let me share something from my own experience. I'm a seventeen year old girl living in an elite society in a developed city of India. I have school early in the morning. Both my parents work, and often return at 10pm. In this condition, we absolutely need to have a housemaid. Well, we've had maids for 2 hours, 12 hours and presently 24 hours. Maids are much appreciated and well-treated in our households. Just beside our house, our neighbour does not allow the maid to use the house washroom, instead makes her go to a common washroom for maids. We never do that, we have a bed for our maid, and don't let them sleep on the floor. We behave extremely well with them, and my parents often give them incentives when they need to go to home. We get them new clothes on occassions, instead of money. Hell, my parents bought one maid a new phone when her old one didnt work anymore. However, the twist. We never have maids stick with us. Why? Most maids (24 hours) stay for a month, go to their homes for the 2 day leave, and never return. Then repeat at another house. Repeat again. We sleep late at night, and hence we asked our maid to sleep in the afternoon for 2-3 hours. They speak on the phone then, and complain that- why do you guys sleep so late? Fact is, despite us treating them like family, talking, laughing and watching TV with them, they take it for granted. Its a work culture in almost the 30 maids we've observed. My point is- Just like not all employers are the same, not all maids are the same.

It should go both ways, people should treat domestic help with courtesy and respect and give them extra care as needed. In our family, we always provide food ,medicines umbrellas even phone plans. However, they should also inform when they need to take leave, and understand that, in most jobs that one cannot just take huge amounts of vacation leave and still expect to be paid. It creates a lot of hardship, especially if the domestic help is helping elderly people.

I am surprised at the one sided version of this story. Maids surely are very important and many of us get so dependent on them and it's our responsibility to show them the empathy they deserve. But, do these maids understand that empathy and reciprocate?? I have had numerous maids for 20 years before COVID and most of them had such horrible attitude, some used to steal anything from gold to Grocery items, some used to show attitude when you ask them to come a little early for festival cleaning, some demanded expensive festival gifts like cell phones, most of them go to their villages for things like Mundan, marriages of distant relatives etc for 10-15 days and expect not to deduct a penny from the salary. Some of them come for work when ever they please, one lady agreed to come at my place at 10 am, while I was negotiating and She started showing up only after 12 noon after I employed her, later I got to know She was already busy for 10 am somewhere else. Another maid would always come 2-3 hours late. Our current maid eats lunch everyday at our home, drinks tea, and is given gifts/cash on all major festivals. I am not being an unsympathetic but some maids can be really oversmart too. Back home, we really have a good maid, working at my place for good 12 years now. We come in North and now maids here have unnecessary demands like providing a mobile phone + salary in advanced whenever demanded under various situations. I completely understand POV here or I would give a mobile too but first they should work for good amount if time atleast. In this video, we can see all they are pointing is "jiske paas paisa hai uska hi value, hamara koi nahi" Some of us are really working hard and made their life. So the way they are saying they suffer, we also do suffer if the maid is not good or trustworthy. So to raise an issue, Brut has a good segment here but then every coin has two sides always.

I always treat my househelp as queen. She comes at her own sweet time. Takes leave whenever she wants without any deduction of salary. Always gift her timely . Everyday ask her for food/water. Never ask her to do any extra work. Still I gift her on women's day, dussehra, Diwali & new year with saree, handbags, jwellery items etc. If asked once to come early she starts showing tantrum & argues. Their health issues , their holidays are always on priorities. What about these kind of maids! Can't keep on changing as one or the other have same or different kind of issue associated with them. Home-makers have to deal with them. So kindly do make an episode on such situations as well..... Sometimes

Good suggestion, I am sure people will empathise more with real life stories of mental atrocities that some househelps can create for the elderly and the young children left in their care; all this despite paying them a good salary and the comforts of the employer's home.

Now due to aomw reason my current house help had to take leave for 5 days and our house of sr citizen with a baby need someone to help, i accidentally came across my older house help since her marriage got delayed and ask her help she denied upfront. Good of you to address one of the most under organized labour sectors in our country. There are no leave rules, no specific scale of pay, no benefits, no rights, no particular job profile which specifies what chores and what not should be performed by them. I lived in an elite housing in Asansol, WB for a couple of years. Had everyday fights with residents about the ways they treated the domestic workers. It just boiled my blood when some of these employers from hell virtue signalled about humanity and what not in open forums. We are a bunch of hypocrites. No surprise that the residents of the same housing bribed security personnel to poison puppies, were disrespectful to tenants, oblivious of minority rights and encroached in private spaces. It's a pattern of lack of awareness, social oblivion and intolerance.

If I had a honest helper like this Didi in my house I would have treated her like a family. Since childhood i had a bad impression towards helpers (we don't address them as servants or maids). Whomever we knew and a helper who was working in our house were mostly rude and would steal stuffs from our house, would ask for new clothes and shoes whenever mum bought for me so my mum had to buy for our helper too though she was not earning much. After marriage I saw different helpers in my in-laws' hometown and each one would like to work less ask for more money and on top of that steal grossery, money, new clothes, bags etc and later we noticed that my mother in law end up doing more work during cooking and the helper just enjoy talking to her. Still my in-laws never confronted her or scolded her cause it is difficult to get helpers in that area. Now I don't let any helper in my house. However, we had a cook for some months and even though we use to request him alot to have breakfast or tea, he would refuse. I even sent cloths for his kids when he went to his hometown during a festival. So if you know someone ask them to go to kerela (Mannar area) it's really hard to get helpers there and people from Kerala pay a lot with food and gifts during functions and festivals.

Back when I was a kid, I remember a maid used to come to work at my house. She was a very kind woman and my mom used to treat her very well. She also happened be from Andra Pradesh. In 2015, when Bahubali 1 was just released, one day I offered her to watch the movie on my computer, when she had completed her day's work early. Idk why I did that, but being a movieholic myself I felt pity for her not having to watch a film like Bahubali, esp being from Andra. Just felt like sharing this incident.

In Pune, maids doesn't behave victim, we have to change our timing based on their availability. We can't even tell them its not clean properly, their fast reply is then find someone else. This behaviour only for those who actually does the works well compare to other maids. They know their work is good but if I am being noce to them , I also expect a nice behaviour from them. I fired a maid just because her rude words, she was nice at work but she thought she is irreplaceable. So I guess it has to apply in both side be nice to each other.

We handle them well and also give food sometimes. In my society they have a kind of union and they prefer homes with fewer members they are not willing to work for a family of four. Instead they prefer where couple is there with no children.

Let me share about domestic help in urban cities of India. We have had maids from my childhood. They have limitless demands. They(not all) take leaves as per their wish and would demand full payment. They will backtalk concocted stories about the employers in the neighborhood. They will play the victim card whenever they get chance and can shout and scream on top of their voices as per their choice. And again they would steal too if they get chance. So, u need to be very careful with ur money n jewelry. Now, if you hire a maid for yourself, you will feel the pain that we urban women face on daily basis. Eg- If theres a guest or for any reason extra dishes r there to clean, she wudnt do them!! You wud have to ask them to sweep properly, or else ur house wud be semi clean. And trust me, they have, if not awesome, a good life too through their earnings. Our maids go on tours, vacations, pujas, go out, etc just like us, just on their budget. As I said, they wont be happy, unless u marry them and donate ur property n everything!! Oh, we can never dare to ask them to clean the toilets, we do it by ourselves. I hope i included all the points. At the end, many women get fed up and ask them to leave, its at that moment they get sober and start working properly and the cycle goes on..

In my case Its opposite to whatever you have shown. I have suffered 5 years with my maid, finally terminated her. She troubled me so much while I was working, she was never on time, i would miss my bus, or my husband would get late to office and to deliver our kid's food to daycare. she was just lazy to getup early and come for work, without notice she would take leave frequently and we had to wash all the dried up vessels after back from work and when i was pregnant, my husband and I both got hospitalised during due to major health problems and she had troubled my MIL also by not turning up for many days, coming late, not ready to do the designated work. We have never deducted her salary, given clothes, utensils, food, money, yearly increments and what not. Once during my pregnancy I fell on her feet to come on time as my MIL was getting irritated by her behavior. The term "Maid" is equal to nightmare for me now. 3 years after her termination she came home to invite for her wedding at the age of 35. Her mother was trying for her marriage since 10 years and it was not happening. I used to feel very bad and even cried whenever she used to talk about grooms coming and rejecting her, I would always sympathise and pray God for her. When she came to invite, she fell on my feet and apologized. She said, I troubled you so much during your pregnancy and made you cry thats y all these years I couldn't get married. I was surprised to know she was regretting, I asked her not to cry and said I don't have any such hard feelings or never cursed her. Also gave her a good amount of money to buy a silk saree. But I don't want to keep a maid ever again.

When she joined back work after lockdown she was not ready wear mask and neither washed hands properly. One day I told her to wash properly she screamed at me. Our neighbors started complaining that she isn't wearing mask. That is when we decided to terminate her. She was young without any responsibility of her home. She and her mother lived together and mother also earned, had own house, father had died, elder sister married and settled long back. She was just lazy to getup early and come for work on time, she would take leave for same reason. She herself had confessed it with other maids. Every one in our locality terminated her one by one. I was the last one to do after bearing the torture for 5 years. She didn't had empathy towards me while I had it towards her, I always wished her good and even she knew it. Don't portray maids as heroes and masters as villians. There are always another side of the coin. Poorly researched documentary.

My mother tells me often how they treat those helpers even if the food goes bad staying in the fridge they won't care. They'll let it waste but never offer to the helpers.
