Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the 2 km. slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

Yes, when the father cried about his arms hurting so badly from working that he couldn't sleep was incredibly moving. I think we tend to forget the struggles faced by those who came before us, especially in America. We need to wake up to the fact that the ultra wealthy in collaboration with our own government is ripping off the future for our children. Everyday pieces of our country are sold off, jobs requiring skilled labor keep going overseas, and the gap between rich and poor is swallowing the middle class. Soon it will be rich (paying little to no taxes) and the poor (paying their share as well as that of the wealthy). Our country could easily become filled with slums, increased homelessness, crime and few opportunities to save ones self.
@jatinshilen
@jatinshilen 11 ай бұрын
Not possible because you need to understand why the rich are rich in the first place. Its because of us the middle class and low class consumers. We by consumerism directly or indirectly fund their businesses and keep the money flowing in their pockets, which they then use for expansionism. If by chance US or any country for that matter become homeless, slumified or has a general lack of money then the rich will fall as well. Imagine what we could do if we all follow a minimalist lifestyle all their smiles will fade away.

That’s because of the number of people coming to Mumbai which is way more than the influx into any other city in India;many to make it in movies but never leave if they don’t.Obviously not everyone is going to have a place.It’s straining at its seams to function and it’s not due to a lack of efficiency.Its one of the most efficient places I’ve seen in India,just too many people.If the migration was more balanced to match the rest of the country,it would not be so extreme.Move Bollywood elsewhere,the place will get a reprieve.

Mumbai is a alpha city and is financially important city for global trade. On one hand, seeing India's rapid improvement over the last 10 years has been amazing, it's a country full of hard working, naturally intelligent people with a deeply fascinating and rich culture; they truly deserve to be one of the top dogs on the International stage. But seeing how these new developments and infrastructure destroy entire neighborhoods, and thousands of lives with each neighborhood leveled, that is extremely discerning. India faces many more hurdles, including government corruption and the wills of the ultra-wealthy, overpopulation, the continued need for economic improvement, etc.... And buying people's homes from under their feet to be destroyed, just because they are slums, is the worst way to go about gentrification.

The gentrification is so real in this one. I'm not supporting the slums, but kicking out people just to build overpriced luxury homes that only a few could afford is just so corrupt. At first I thought that they are actually going to give the affected ones new homes for compensation but starting I saw their prototypes, I was wrong. Those luxury flats will not help the city at all. Instead, it will just affect more places due to displacement. It's selfish tbh.

As has always been with the poor and less fortunate folk everywhere and more so in India, the population is incredible and their rate of multiplication is mind blowing. Note one man saying he has 9 kids - in this day and age. This has always been their curse. In a city like Mumbai where space is at a premium, a family of 3 struggle to survive - what chance does a family with 9 kids + elders have ? Unfortunately their financial situation doesn’t come to their mind when they have kids. Better community service and educating them about population control is the only way out. Else, there’s no point in complaining about sparse space and deplorable living conditions. Peace ❤ ✌️

India needs to implement well managed programs by it's governments and millionairs to provide well managed housing and social assistance for it's poor like other countries. Foreigners should not be doing this for India. As is, the country operates and presents itself like something out of the Victorian 1800s. Watch shows like Little Doret or Berkley Square and compare. Sound infrastructure and urban planning is needed with respect for the environment . India needs compassion for its people.

@@mdbalkissoon364 Having 9 children, with no employment and no social assistance is a form if child abuse. Many western countries will remove children from such inconsiderate parents, if they can't look after them or provide them a safe environment to grow. Just because India does not have a robust child protection service does not mean these parents should get away--this man with 9 children is responsible for the neglect of his children even if I have a lot of compassion for his circumstances. I am born and brought in Bombay. City of dreams? Well I doubt may be its called city of dreams because no other city in India is glamorous like Bombay specially because of bollywood. Corruption in every department, no good infrastructure, ugly high rises costing millions. The beauty of the city lies in the buildings made by britishers hundred years ago what a beautiful architecture but even that is now in bad conditions. Slums? Yes slums are all over but now this slum dwellers one can't call them poor, one small room in slum can cost minimum about a million INR. Majority of slums are encroached land, same goes to dharavi many western documentaries are made on dharavi but do you think they or all the slum dwellers need a better life? NO. The corrupt politicians too don't want slums to go in fear of loosing votes. Westerners many time acts stupid, they go to slum make videos projecting the dwellers as if very poor living in inhuman conditions, but this same people never leaves any opportunity to encroach lands. Slum developers, slum dwellers politicians are all same corrupt. Many sell their house in rehabiliated buildings and again encroach another area and make slums. The cycle goes on & on. The rich too are of different category there are people who spends thousands of rupees for one dinner in luxury restaurant but when it come to basic they are not less than slum dwellers in mentality. Majority of crowd that is not only in Bombay but all over are not more than 5".5" Tall, malnourished, below average personality, very unhygenic. Two decades ago politicians were screaming they will make Bombay into next sanghai, for get about sanghai they were not able to make it Bombay the britishers left.
