Well to answer your question it’s just plan ol hard work. I started my first live in renovation in 2009 since then every bit of equity I got when I sold the homes I double the next home renovation size. It was not easy. I’m also a full time firefighter and my wife is a realtor. We make a pretty good team. On our days off We renovated our houses that We lived in. Most call it sweat equity. It’s hard work not for everyone. Even my closest friends think I’m crazy usually when I would sell my home after just one or two years. But every time I more than doubled my equity. Fast forward 5 properties later I’m living in my dream home. But I love doing it and building/ renovating my homes and rides is my hobby. I don’t play video games, golf anything like that. Again it’s hard work but 12 years later it’s paid off. Your right most people don’t get it. But hard workers these days are extremely hard to find. So the how to usually falls on deaf ears these days.

Enjoyed all your dream garage build videos. I just had my slab poured two days ago and will finalize the metal building purchase some time next week. I learned from your video about a few items to be very specific about. I do like those residential roll-up doors much better than the standard metal roll-up doors but the residential garage doors are more costly. The metal building is much less expensive than if you would have had it stick-built ground up. Thanks much for sharing. 👍🏽🤠 12/7/23

I'm enjoying your shop build series, great things to know before you sign the contract. On your Carriage House Garage trim pieces. When you go for the Carriage House look but on a garage door, most do it as you have but to make it give the correct illusion you need a break in the door so it looks like two doors, not one with handles on it. Paint a narrow black line from top to bottom, about 3/8 inch with, on the door in between the two handles you mounted on the face of the door. Then the illusion is that there really are two Carriage House Doors. Another way is to use Pin Striping tape. Keep the Videos coming.

Looks nice.we had a smaller 22’x24’ steel building installed and on ours the metal on the sides runs horizontally not vertically so I have to fill some gaps on the corners instead of along the base.I have 9’ walls in mine.mines mainly used just to store a couple vehicles in and some motorcycles not so much to be a shop.we did the same thing you did for garage doors because I also hate the storage unit style doors that are standard on these buildings.we had the same style garage 16’x7’ door installed to match our attached garage doors but I did install 2”x8”s around the inside of the opening for him to be able to install all the hardware like he’s accustomed to on a wood structure.only thing I regret is the galvanized screws which like you said I assumed would be painted to match so I’ll be going back over the building and pulling and replacing mine at some point.good job standing your ground and making them fix their issues.good looking building.

The doors really look good on the shop. I used to install all types of garage doors with my dad’s company (residential to 16 foot wide by 18 foot tall rolling steel doors for trains) and one thing we always did was ensure that the motors had something solid to anchor to on both sides of the motors. Yes we installed literally tons of side-mount motors in case your wondering. If that was my shop, I would add a length of galvanized 2X2 angle iron that spanned the two horizontal girt members and enabled you to mount the top and the bottom of the left side of that motor onto. Yes it probably doesn’t move much now, but there is a lot of torque at the top of the motor trying to rotate the spring shaft and over time that could become an issue that causes the other mounts to loosen up or at worse break something.

Very nice total package. That wall mount spring and opener was a very good Idea especially where the lift will be. After dealing with both insulated and plain steel, the insulation does add some structural stiffness I think. Not sure how much more that would have been though. Watch working around those erector set type angles. They are just sheared off and the edges are sharp as a knife, I have a few stitches in my hand to prove it. Not sure how much snow you get, but might be worth putting in a few of your extra trusses to shore things up. I have a metal roof on my house I put on and the installer included an extra horizontal piece across all the edges to keep snow and Ice from sheeting off the roof in big chunks. It seems to work well.

Nice looking build. Im in the process of building a 56x26 ft pole barn shop with 14 ft eves, with 8ft of the 56ft being a porch. I wish i could have gone slightly bigger, but unfortunately zoning requires the garage not to be more than 1/2 the size of overall square footage of the house. I am also planning on pouring a 6" slab in one of the bays to support a lift (the rest of the slab will be 4"). I was concerned about having enough space to fit a vehicle in (Like a full size silverado for instance) along with a lift, but seeing your video has given me a bit of optimism. Do you struggle with being able to walk around and work on vehicles because of the size of the shop or anything?

I ran the door tracks at an angle, hugging the roof pitch. Eliminated the tracks hanging down very far. I HAD to move the air compressor outside ... it was like working in a base drum. Spray in foam for the walls and cieling will help with acoustics. Not very expensive. Make sure to expose the beams and stringers in case you want to add inside wall covering. Scraping that cured insulation is a bear. Your shop looks great!

Looks alright. I see the benefits of this type of building. It may not work quite so well where I live , but maybe I’m just being paranoid. We get a lot of heavy winds,,,, today 40 mph gusting to 50 mph, tomorrow 50 gusting to 65 mph. We have has 115 mph gusts as well. I know there are areas that can be worse,,,, like Colorado a few weeks ago,,, 105 mph gusts!!! Auugghhhh! It won’t burn as readily though!! Th e doors are perfectly fine!! If it gets cold you are only sheltered from wind and moisture. The cold will come right through. You know what you need though!!! I’m in Alberta, Canada. Unless you have no intentions of doing anything in your garage in cold weather ,,, to 45 below here, you would never put an uninsulated garage door in. Solid wood, maybe,,,,, but they have moisture issues. The side mount opener on the door,,,, awesome!!! The only way to go really! You can have a hydraulic or air scissor lift on the same side your wife parks on and never have to worry about overhead!! Two hoists for different reasons. I have found a scissor lift is good for wheels, tires, suspension, even oil changes. I still prefer my 2 post lift, but I have a “portable” (not really, it’s dang heavy) Costco scissor lift as well. That gets used a lot by myself and friends and family while I have the 2 post tied up most of the time. Just finished a Roush Supercharged 2012 Raptor SuperCab. It was bought stock and quite mint even with 125,000 miles that were mostly highway as an eccentric job boss’ ride! Haha. He’s a nice guy though! I said if he ever wanted to sell it, and I hate guys that say that and then back out,,,,,, so I bought it! It rides better than my 2019 Raptor SuperCab and is a very comfy truck!! It was not meeting the performance of the 2019 so with the Roush kit I should have 650 hp ,,,,, on a 125,000 mile motor!!! Haha. I know of 2 guys in the area that took their trucks delivered with supercharged 6.2s, one with Roush and one with Whipple. Even the Whipple motor has lasted just fine into the 100,000 plus mile range with about 15% more horsepower. These guys play hard in the open prairie with those trucks!!! The motors are fine. They had other breakdowns, but due to type of use more than a failure of the trucks. Anyways,,,,, I am fortunate enough to work out if a 40 x 60 shop with a 16 foot ceiling height. There’s 4 doors across the 40 foot width,,,,, 3 are 10 wide x 12 high and one is 12 wide x 14 high for a motor home I never bought!! Haha. On the right hand side facing the shop there is also a 10 w x 12h door for the lift. I come in that way. I can store more vehicles that way (I think). If you like doing your own maintenance on your daily drivers while the lift is tied up by a project,,,, the scissor lift may be a nice second or backup lift. You can even use it outside if you are going to have a level concrete apron!!

Im not dissing your setup at all, but I think you are going to have difficulty with the lift and the garage door. For one, you will not be able to open the garage door if the lift is there. The lift is about 11 feet 4 inches at all times, car on it or not. So it will be 1 foot above the garage door always. So basically, if it is in the center of the room, it cannot be near the garage door at all or the door can't be opened all the way. Also, with a car on the lift, the garage door area will be blocked by the car by about 4 feet. My recommendation, run the tracks up the angle portion of the garage so the door opens upward, or - do a coil up garage door that stays completely at the doorway and doesn't protrude into the space.

You mention its good where he mounted the rails because "it takes a lot of the weight off so it's not just pulling down on this one truss". I would be careful of the fixings used. The newly installed support beams for the tracks are mounted to the under-side of our roof trusses, which means the weight of the entire door is being held up by the screws/bolts only. It would have been a lot safer to mount the new rail support beams ABOVE your roof truss pieces...

Why did they not follow the roof line for the tracks, In my shop I had them follow the pitch so when the door is open its not in the way my doors 12H x 18W and 12H x 12W .. oh nice car

I see by this video that they haven't put the 16ft truss spans in yet.. Have all your issues been addressed yet???

When you buy a cheap steel building, you end up with a cheap steel building.

Maybe it's just the camera Watching the video it looks like You should have spaced the fake handles equally on both doors it would look right after all you complained about and then do a bone head move like you did ??

It's a shame it takes 2 trys and a lot of stress on your part to catch these sleeze contractors and hold them to their initial contract. Looks like they were hoping you wouldn't notice their corner cutting tactics. Everythings a fight these days. Glad it worked out.

Regarding the trusses... Actually, it is a very simple fix you can do yourself. Wire rope "cable" and turnbuckles will solve the issue. Tie the tops of the walls together at each truss using the wire rope and place a little tension on the wire rope using turnbuckles. This will keep the tops of the walls from spreading (causing the roof to collapse) when a snow load is placed on the roof. Yes, a triangular truss with a center support would be better, but if you need to play the hand you have been dealt, the best cheat is to tie the tops of the walls together with cable....

What keeps the walls from coming in?
@theElderberryFarmer3 жыл бұрын
@@toddmiller6239 Downward force from the roof puts an outward directed pressure on the tops of the walls. The cable would be intended to keep the walls from spreading apart. There isn't anything putting an inward force on the walls that I can point to (unless the building was to depressurize as a result of some sort of weather situation maybe, like a tornado?). I think I'd still go with welding on the additional square tubing to create a longer collar tie rather than using cables and turnbuckles. I'd be concerned about the cable stretching over time and allowing the walls to migrate outward at the tops. Keeping track of it and tightening turnbuckles periodically is one more task to try to keep after.

@@theElderberryFarmer Correct, downward pressure on the truss pushing out on the tops of the walls. I don't think the cable would need to be maintained at all. The cables would still do their job even if they are sagging a little in the middle. Snow load puts down pressure on the truss, this pushes out on the wall until the cable tightens preventing further spread. Cables are an inexpensive insurance for a potentially costly problem. Cables now and upgrade to steel beam later when funds permit?
@toddmiller62393 жыл бұрын
@@theElderberryFarmer The flex in the roof is caused by the weak upper beam on the truss. Not the walls flexing out. this could be corrected by a lower beam and W bracing.

I believe that would work. In my area snow load is extremely rare and if possible maybe 1/2- 1” max. Hopefully next few videos I’ll get the shop wired up. Then I’ll be able to weld in a second lower truss support. Should be good then. I have really appreciated all the input and knowledge so far. Thanks guys.

I see they never installed the 16 ft braces for the room.
