I was born in the 50's. My mother as a child lived off grid. Wood stove, kerosene light, no generator other than basic wind power from windmill. It was pretty special to fire up the windmill and use it to help pump water from the well. As a very young child, I remember visiting the homestead and using the Sears catalogue pages in the outhouse. Her parents, my grand parents, homesteaded raw land in early 1900's. It has only taken two generations to switch to reliance on large corporation utilities. (Not a bad thing) but certainly something to toss around in our brains about how fragile the world is. I try to remind my children of this without them rolling their eyes. Good on you to think deeply about the resources we need to survive on this beautiful planet.

I was in Okinawa and have gone through several typhoons. Including a super typhoon (185 mph sustained winds). They had virtually no damage because all buildings are reinforced concrete and are designed to prevent interior flooding. Insurance companies should require similar designs in areas regularly hit by hurricanes or tornados. Government flood insurance should do the same thing. Insurance that allows building of targets encourages bad decisions, endangers lives and increases costs for everybody.

You have your way, Kevin at HHF has his way. Gary at WFF has his way. There are others that are doing it their way. As you said, it's what works for them. Most of you, doing what you do, have never done it before. Each new step is a learning experience. And you're succeeding. Thanks for showing the way for others that may want to do it. Your generator has a carburetor float problem causing it to flood like that and all that fuel inside your crank case has probably washed out your cylinder and damaged your piston rings and scoring your cylinder walls… I have a 10,000 watt Generac generator that I inherited from my parents after they had passed away but my dad had bought it new in 2000 and I still use it occasionally when needed and it works like a dream….. it will power the whole house if needed …. You have been through four generators from Harbor freight I would personally recommend the Generac and shop somewhere else for a generator

Dutch the gas in the generator oil was probably caused by a stuck carb float. The float won't shut off the gas from the tank and the carb will overfill then gas will flow through the intake valve and drain by the piston rings into the engine oil.
