Yes, Run around Sue was done by the group. They had quite a few hits like I’m just a Lonely Teenager. Dion then went on to a solo career marked by Abraham, Martin and John.

This song is from the Doo Wop era. Lots of groups, lots of great songs. Listen to Little Anthony & The Imperials (Tears On My Pillow is my favorite), The Flamingos (I Only Have Eyes For You), The Platters (Only You), The Skyliners (Since I Don't Have You). Just a small sampling. Another song I think you'd enjoy, R&B rather than Doo Wop, is Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me by Mel Carter. So much wonderful music to hear from so many genres.

By 1961 Dion, and the Belmonts parted ways cause he went solo. The group you here with him on 'Run Around Sue' were called the Del-Satins. He used them mostly in his early solo career. Years later he got back together with the Belmonts briefly.
@johnj27633 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct. And for years there was some animosity between Dion and the old Belmont group members. The Del-Satins backed him up for 'Run Around Sue' and can be seen on the video backing him up on 'The Wanderer'. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZXLiImajtWEgc0

When Lou Reed inducted Dion into the R&R Hall of Fame, he called him one of the great voices in rock history. Well said. Like many others, his career was disrupted by his heroin addiction in the ‘60s. Who knows what he would have achieved? He’s still recording in his 80s.

I heard he got sober in 1968 and then wrote and performed Abraham, Martin, and John. I also heard he has maintained long-term sobriety.

I grew up in the 70s during the 50s revival. Happy Days was on tv and there were several 50s inspired groups who had hits on the UK charts. So I’ve always been a fan of the 50s sound.

The group started as Dion and the Belmonts, then Dion went solo, but still his songs usually had backup singers. The Belmonts continued without Dion too, but only had a couple minor hits. Dion's "The Wanderer" was #1 in the US and his biggest UK hit at #10.

The Wanderer is so timeless. It’s odd that it wasn’t a UK number one.
@Midwestclassics19583 жыл бұрын
Actually what many don’t know about is the Belmonts would sing together in subway stations (for best echo), street corners, etc. They recorded their first song “Teenage Clementine” and Carlo was lead, Freddie was tenor and Angelo was falsetto. A couple more songs were recorded without Dion. The Dion joined them as he knew about them since he lived in the same area. It became Dion and the Belmonts. They made songs, went on tours and the most known tour is the Winter Dance Party, with Buddy Holly, Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. Angelo was not in that tour with them as he was in the Navy (he was drafted in). Then Dion left to become solo. My opinion is Dion and the Belmonts sounded great together and Dion sounded great without the Belmonts and the Belmonts sounded great without Dion.

Dion has said the group vocals at the very beginning and much through the song was meant to intimate horns (trumpets etc) as they were familiar to and liked a horn band. Listen to it again see it you hear horns..... or at the very least the cadence of horns. In fact, the "wop- wop -wop wop wop " in this song is an imitation of a snare drum. Actually, at lot of background vocals on Doo-Wop songs were just vocal imitations of instruments. Doo-Wop originated on the streets of cities with friends getting together to sing. Since they had no instrument backup, they sang the instruments part... even with the songs they made up

I never saw Dion with The Belmonts, although I was many do wop and Motown acts during those early days. I did however later see Dion do "Abraham, Martin and John" in person when it had just been released and was a hit. Think I miss those days?

Early days before Dion DiMucci became a solo artist. This time (late 50s) was the prime "Doo-Wop" era. There were so many vocal groups, just like these guys. While Doo-wop was indeed "Rock and Roll, it was almost it's own little genre of 50s Rock and Roll. Just like "Heavy Metal" is considered Rock, it's a different style of Rock, than say, "Classic Rock" of The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, etc. I really enjoy the vocal harmonies that is Doo-wop music. Thanks Friend

You should check out some performances by the most famous and talented tribute act/cover band of all time, Sha Na Na. What they essentially did was take every "voice" and "sound" from the 50's and put them all together in one band. Every cover they did was perfect. They even got their own TV show in the 70's

The great Dion and the Belmonts split up in 1960. I remember where I was when I heard about it. Yikes! Dion then went solo, but was backed by another group named the Del-Satins. Dion & the Belmonts had a sound made unique by their incredible falsetto tenor Angelo D'Aleo. Those were the days my friend.

This is like from the days of taking your girl out to the soda shop, or cruising out to the drive-in theater for a Saturday night date. 'I found my thrill'. I'm ecstatic that you found Dion's best song! If this song doesn't want to make you go and shake your bones around the dance floor, then nothing will. Btw- this video was earlier, when Dion was with the Belmonts, (50's).
@johnj27633 жыл бұрын
Ok. I'm going to go out on a ledge here a make a recommendation out of left field. The Belmonts were a perfect representation of Doo Wop, and if you like Doo Wop there is a long and illustrious list of groups and performers that were stars who could be featured. It is literally a fantasy land of superior artists many of them almost forgotten. The best include great acts such as; The Platters, the Penguins, The Shirelles, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, The Del-Vikings, The Flamingos, The Coasters, the great great Little Anthony and the Imperials, Rosie and the Originals, The Chordettes, The Diamonds, The Dells, The Five Satins, the Moonglows, The Chifons, The Contours, The Ronettes, The Crystals, The Drifters, The Impressions, Jay and The Americans, and dozens of other groups including many of the early MoTown acts. BUT, BUT, BUT, and its a big but, you first have to look at the progenitors. 1st. The Ink Spots, and then and most importantly the incredible, the legendary Mills Brothers. Talk about voices, harmony, melody, impeccable vocal prowess, these guys had it all, for years. This is Old School. Classic pop. jazz, swing with a core of three, at onetime four, and with dad five, they were the 1st African American group to have a #1 hit on the Billboard charts. With over 2000 recordings, dozens of gold records and sales in the multi millions they blazed the trail. Here are some samples. Their 1st #1 (and the ONLY instrument you hear is the guitar) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaHTqZKvj9hners Here they are mid-fifties with a bit of swing on the old Nat King Cole Show: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bp7cfGxpe9aVj8U and this stunning performance 40 years later with John Williams and The Boston Pops kzbin.info/www/bejne/laDGpKGpisaVjbM They are their own horn section!! Still sharp, crisp and powerful after 50 years on stage. You can trace the origins of rock/pop/R&B/Blues from earlier in the century with such songs as 'My Daddy Rocks Me' by Trixie Smith, Pine Top Smiths 'Pine Top's Boogie Woogie, and Jim Jackson's 'Kansas City Blues' . Don't forget Gospel was in there too as witnessed by the Jubalaires; here memorably performing "Noah" kzbin.info/www/bejne/jamToIhnhNN7nJo in perfect vocal harmony. Benny Goodman and his Orchestra featuring the incredible Gene Krupa with "Sing,Sing,Sing' and Goodman's 'Bugle Call Rag' is an example of the evolving swing era, (not to mention Louis Armstrong) . Then through Glenn Miller and his orchestra featuring Tex Beneke, the wonderful Modernaires fronted by Marion Hutton ( Betty's sister), and with a truly stunning dance routine by the jaw-dropping Nicholas Brothers appended for good measure. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHfZkIOlj5echpI Add some electric guitar influences from Sister Rosetta Tharpe, or sample 'Guitar Boogie' by Arthur Smith, or 'Hillbilly Boogie' by the Delmore Brothers, and then segue into the 50's with Ike Turner's 'Rocket 88", anything by Muddy Waters or the brilliant and electric Little Richard and the rest of the architects of Rock. My favorite will always be Fats Domino, having seen him perform several times when I lived in New Orleans. Here he performs the classic 'Walking to New Orleans". kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXyweYOImdStpLc Enjoy!
