It's hard to imagine that the initial cost would stay the same, year over year or as the care requirements increase. My mother who initially had in-home care, till the care company could no longer supply reliable help (at a cost of about $3k/month), moved into assisted living that started at $4k/month and, over the course of 4 years went to $8.5k/month and she's now in memory care at $12k/month. The care has declined, the staffing ratio has decreased and the food now sucks...for $12k/month. Luckily, she has the money...I certainly don't.

This retirement home sounds like a timeshare….. considering most people will have a paid off home by the time they are at the age where they would need care, you could hire a private nurse to care for just you up until death at your own home for less than the price of that facility. Please please please read the fine print as most of these places can increase dues year to year with no cap and you must pay or they will sue you. It’s not as good of a deal as it seems. I have a family member that signed for something similar

Friendship Village has been in our community for decades. If they were running a scheme, it would have been found out by now.

I thought the same… kind of a weird premise to me. I work in home care and I’ve never heard of a facility like that. Interesting for sure!

@@AnnEckhart I just encourage everyone to look at the numbers. For what people are paying to live there, they could get personalized care for just them in the comfort of their own home. A lot of families in this time of life are thinking not with numbers in mind. It’s a highly emotional time and that’s where things like this can happen. I wasn’t saying it was a scam, it’s set up like a timeshare and not the best use of retirement money. $200,000 down payment plus $3000 a month. Say this person lives in the assisted living for 15 years, then 5 years in the nursing home portion with nothing going up in expenses. This person will pay this facility which I doubt after they sign the contract they can get out of $720,000 in rent PLUS the $200,000 down payment. That’s if they don’t finance the $200,000 down payment to get in…. If someone owned even a $200,000 home which would be incredibly doable in Iowa, I live here too. If you hired a nurse to take care of you and only you, you’d probably pay them $65,000 a year as an average. If you paid this person for 5 years which is how long you’d need the nursing home portion, They would spend $325,000 and still have a house to show for it in the end. The problem is people just look at the convenience of something like that and don’t look at the numbers…. Not saying it’s a scam…. But I’d rather pay less and have personalized care in my own home then pay 3 times as much for employees to take care of me in a facility and when I die, I have nothing to show for that $200,000 I had to pay in….. just giving the numbers for anyone considering.

When you are working on your next children’s book, do you think you could show us how you do the illustrations? I would love to learn! Or maybe you could write a how-to on that…I would totally buy it!

I was wondering about illustrations too. Thanks for asking about it.

200,000 down is wild to me 😮 it’s sad how crazy facility prices are 😢.
@AnnEckhartАй бұрын
For a lifetime of care, it’s actually affordable. Especially when a nursing home can be upwards of $10K a month.
@Sdeezy18Ай бұрын
@@AnnEckhart I could see if you move in right at 55! But most people will probably not use a “lifetime” worth that much. Just my opinion!

My grandparents moved into an assisted living facility together years ago in Colorado. I can't imagine the price. My other grandma lives in one now, and it's $7k a month. It's scary to think about the future, knowing I could never afford that, and I have no kids. Honestly, personally, I see no benefits to living past 65 at most, so if I'm lucky enough to live that long in decent shape, that'll be enough time, lol Amyways I love Sam's scan and go. I never understand why people wait in long lines there! Cute Halloween book! ❤❤

We just put my 94 yr old mom in assisted living. This place is great she has a one bedroom apt, meals are all provided they get a full menu to choose from like a restaurant. They have a theatre to watch movies etc, artist room, flower gardens, full hair and nail salon, etc etc. we told her it’s nothing lil a nursing home. It is $4000 a month but she is happy there.

Wow hard decisions to make on the cost of care but at least you can see what options are there visiting your friend. My father in law passed away 2 weeks ago age 91 my mother in law is 87 they were both in their house & he had some nurse care come in the last year & spent last 3 weeks in hospital we are lucky in Canada that all this is covered & he had insurance to cover meds & over 65 most meds are free in Canada. But we were lucky he didn't have to go in a home for care there would of been high costs. Hubby & I need to now make some arrangements & not leave it to our daughter to do. Thanks Ann for talking about hard things on your channel.

17:21 -- The McDonald's ice cream/shake machine and Sam's Icee machine - -- always down!. I read that it takes 4 hours to clean the ice cream machine and putting it back together is a PITA. Maybe the same is for the Icee machine. Thanks for the ride along.

Hi Ann! I'm relatively new to your channel and enjoy you. I was just checking out your EBay store and noticed you have a Beleek cup and saucer listed for $2,499.00. Is this the true price or a typo? Not interested in buying it but just curious. Have a good day!
