every couple of years someone new makes a Sega Genesis controller

@Grimlo9ic They are in the hardware market for controllers. They license out the design. Retro bit has some licensed controllers right now. That said, having bought a bunch of these I would recommend the md30 from 8bitdo instead.

def want a version of this with a clicky dpad rather than the arcade stick design (just better for movement in general but the arcade design is still nice and accurate), but outside of that i think this is one of the best layouts ive ever seen for a fightpad.

100% a lot of those problems could be solved by using better keyswitches... Blues have the WORST actuation point/time/feeling. They're so clicky in a bad way too, like cheap clicky.
@Harril82654 ай бұрын
@@GregInTechnicolor Never understood the hate for blues, they feel great.
@GregInTechnicolor4 ай бұрын
@Wazzen563 Because 1. the click feels hollow and crunchy, and 2. the actuation point is PAST the tactile click (so you can press in the button past the click and activate the button using the last 35% of the travel distance) Please do some research into them. The only people who genuinely enjoy blues most likely haven't tried anything else. There are multiple videos on this site detailing how/why blues are bad.

@@GregInTechnicolor i much prefer blues than reds because sometimes they dont bottom out during my keypresses, forcing me to use heavier strokes. i use akko lavenders now but blues felt much more responsive, it just sounds bad.

I've been wanting a 6 button version of 8bitdo's neogeo controller ever since I saw their four button one. I guess this guy got tired of waiting and wondering and just did it himself. edit: i got to the end of the video where he says exactly this except for the m30 :)

Yeah I guess I sort of ended up combining both controllers since my design is based on the m30 but that I used a similar joystick to the neogeo

You could try hunting for the PS2 neo Geo controller which does improve both the clicky joystick over the neogeocd original AND it has all 8 buttons complete with l2 and r2 shoulder buttons Combine this with a brooks adapter and you're golden
@Astigos3 ай бұрын
The 8bitdeo neogeo controller buttons feel great but the stick does miss diagonals quite frequently. You have to deliberately push to the corners. Like you, i do hope they do a 6button version which improves the stick.

@Swenglish4 ай бұрын
The problem is there are only four buttons arranged in a square, which means fully pushing two of them at the same time requires the stick to travel further than pushing one of them. That draws a square. One solution could possibly be to add concave curved caps to the buttons that reduce the necessary travel distance at the corners, so that the stick basically "pulls" the two caps outward, pressing the buttons fully with less travel. Maybe. They'd have to be pretty sturdy not to break too easily, though, because the stick would be rubbing against them a lot, and the stick would have to be too thick to slip into the gaps between the caps which would appear when the buttons are pressed...unless the curved caps can overlap in some kind of stacked or combed arrangement so that there isn't a gap. I'm also not sure what the ideal curvature is, but possibly so that they together form a circle when fully pressed. But I could be way off and there may be reasons I haven't thought of why this wouldn't work.
@Gomeshiro3 ай бұрын
maybe just round the square edges and call it a way
@cptncutleg19 күн бұрын
@@Swenglishanother way would be a little unintuitive and would involve some logic gates. By rotating the switches so that the cardinal directions hits 2 switches and diagonals only hit one. That would allow for an octa gate too. Using short-throw switchest might assist in tighter controls too.
@dreamingthelife4 ай бұрын
if you want to make it faster have you tried a square rod(under the disc) to press the switches instead of the circular one?, make it sit flush with the 4 switches I think main problem is is that the switches need to travel too far to register a click also have you tried some grease, WD40 or something under fhe disc to get a smoother motion?

Hey man, I've always had similar ideas and I saw half of the title and the thumbnail and I immediately jumped to joy for finding like-kin. Its like 20 to 15 bucks, check out the xbox 360 or ps3 pdp Versus fighting pad. It had a similar "Joystick" but it used mouse switches I believe. Unfortunately wasn't build with much integrity so the accuracy of the switches wore out, however hands down the most input accurate and detailed non traditional joystick I've ever come across. it was fluid, quick and easy but the feed back from the clicks from sound and feel made you sure you hit complex directionals without any doubt. I use leverless now but still dream about having the ability to recreate that thing just with modern equipment and better design. I really liked how they made the right side smaller to compensate for those who would use a claw grip. I'm all for innovation, i'd love to help out in anything, I tried sponsoring a small team to make it but they bailed out in the end. Let me know!

that other setting for ps5 is for if you have a usb passthrough for a normal ps5 controller (cough cough mayflash's ps5 magic boots). that's a firmware thing, your board does NOT have it, which is why it basically doesn't do anything.

Surely a Pi is overkill for this, and is adding a ton of latency? Consider using a microcontroller to half your response time. The square gate for the switch stick is very clever. You do need switches with better actuation but the basic concept is great. If you made the switches hotswappable, you'd hands down have something phenomenal.

Don't mix up the Raspberry Pi SBCs with their Pico (RP2040-based) microcontroller. This is a microcontroller here. One of the variants that's smaller than the official Pico like the RP2040-Zero from Waveshare. Can't tell which one this is exactly but you can verify it's using the RP2040 by the logo + looking up "RP2-B2". (edit: also by him showing the GP2040-CE web configurator running lol) It's not running a full OS or anything, it's likely running micropython. The Pico is also extremely low latency, used in tons of modern DIY controllers running GP2040-CE firmware. It's also used in adapters for Wii Guitar Hero guitars which makes them lower latency than the wired PS2 versions of the same guitars were. edit2: It is the RP2040-Zero from Waveshare, it's just mounted upside down so it was hard to tell. Found a pic from both sides on their site and it looks right. So that's the same MCU used in the Flatbox Rev 5.

If it had an extra USB A port on it you could put in a MagicBoots dongle separate from where the main cable connects. Might be awkward for a controller this small, though. Look at the Haute42 controllers like the G16 and M16 to see how it works there. They run the same firmware. This is cheaper than anything from Brook and you can leave the dongle in even when you're playing on PC without it changing behavior there.

@casanovafunkenstein50904 ай бұрын
Neurolayt@@Neurolayt honestly, just using microswitches like the Neo Geo pocket would be perfect. Set the thing up so that the shaft sits perfectly flush with the four switches and it should be possible to make it much more immediate and responsive (and potentially a bit smaller. The size of the nub isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if it was smaller you could make it easier to use it with different grips, such as placing your thumb outside for double tapping and inside for circular motions. You could even hold it between thumb and forefinger to be more like an arcade stick, should that be helpful) The buttons being on keyboard switches is definitely a neat idea, but I feel like the directional input would be far too spongy to feel good enough to use without getting frustrated.
