Former building permit tech here! Home builders are NOT on your side. Good, thorough, inspectors are your friends. Builders absolutely will cut any corner they think they can get away with. Utah laws were updated in 2023 so that while insulation is required, cities cannot demand an insulation inspection. I’m 10000% confident this means builders will skip as much insulation as they think they can get away with. I’ve seen builders do all sorts of shady things. Support your city building inspectors!

We need better building inspectors here. Ours are all private and usually work closely with builders and real estate agents. I was a roofer and the stuff I saw them pass for both new construction and resale homes was jaw dropping. I was regularly replacing leaking roofs on houses that the new owners were told still had 10-15 years left on the roof. On new construction, I rarely ever saw an inspector on site. They’d sign off without even inspecting many of the stages of construction.

Also, people just don't know how much difference some of these more environmentally friendly solutions are in states that have a large difference between summer and winter! Till now, we have only re-insulated a couple if rooms and changed out a few windows, and it maked a HUGE difference in comfort level. And just the fact that I have not experienced an electricity shut-down or water pipe malfunctuons in over 15 years is great! We have a wooden stove, just for emergency cases, and also a gas grill, but we use all-electric appliance, and have a great climate inside our home. With the energy we're saving by just installing new windows, they arr psying for our electric car (used nearly every day) - it uses less energy to charge than we save by redusing heating and cooling our house.

As a Haitian American and a long-time listener. Thank you so much for covering the crisis in Haiti. My family back home has been kicked out of their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Absolutely infuriating that corporate lobbyists are ONCE AGAIN sticking their dirty little fingers between what we need as humans and citizens, and their profits. From a tenant in a 70 year old house with an air conditioner unit that breaks every summer while the interior temp tries to stay below 79, and a heater that breaks every winter as it tries to keep the interior temp above 60.... fuck deregulation. I've told my landlord multiple times a year for at least 3 years to update the insulation and windows of this house, and they just won't.
@Nevertoleave
@Nevertoleave 8 ай бұрын
Is there any sort of tenants group board, etc, where you are? Maybe you can make a complaint to them. Or see if there are other tenants with this landlord and you can start pressing them together. My mother in law had a tap issue the building maintenance and management wouldn’t fix and ended up contacting the owner’s son directly (the owner is like 90). They did illegally enter the apartment when she wasn’t there that evening, and didn’t totally fix the issue. But it’s no longer pouring water
@erinmarieee23

Having just completed an engineering degree in sustainable energy, I'm reminded of a lecture where we learned about how much had already been achieved by building codes in Denmark (where I live and studied). These building codes are doing a lot of the heavy lifting in fighting climate change. And now I actually live in a newly build apartment complex outside Copenhagen and it's both cheap and very energy efficient, because our builders have learned to live up to these codes they can do it cheaply (it's also about experience).

As an architect student, the segment on the new building code drama is the exact issue that we are dealing with. Local politics and lobbyist only after their own self interests not only prevent any new housing being made in certain areas, but what is build are usually for-profit “luxury” housing by real estate companies that are more interested in milking money out of people than addressing the housing crisis. And blocking updates to the building code doesn’t just effect residential, but it commercial and infrastructure as well. The lack of affordable housing, the over saturation of for-profit real estate, car-dependent infrastructure, the inefficiency or lack of public transportation, the missing greenspace in urban areas, and the ever decreasing amount of 3rd places all stem from what is or isn’t allowed to be built, all decided on people who don’t what to loose property value in the short term than overall area growth in the longterm.

A niche, but serious, AI book issue is with foraging/wild food books. As someone that teaches this, we've noticed an increase in AI generated books, which can easily give incorrect information on plants/fungi, that at its worst could cause death if people consume something poisonous on their advice. That’s going to be extremely fun as a future lawsuit though. Selling AI generated slop that is falsely marketed and kills people should do the trick. And they can’t exactly argue about diligence since the books look too convincing. There has to be market protections against this and the slanderous fraud. The other will be the fact none of those ai generated books are protected by copyright, so they can be endlessly distributed in any fashion without violating anything. Building codes 100% need to be updated. Not only for energy efficiency but also for structure. I have moved 3 times in the last 5 years, each to a different state. As a renter, these new buildings are being built quickly but are very pore construction. One place I lived was panama City beach, which was destroyed by Hurricane Michael. 5 years later, they have rebuilt with cheap structures selling for a small fortune. This year, we had a tornado, and it destroyed almost all the homes in its path. There was some debate how this tornado shouldn't have caused as much destruction. It just shows how the market is building cheap and trying to cash in where they can.

Cannot wrap my head around the lobbying and the builders association. Its so dumb. A business I worked for in Ireland got a €10,000 grant to install solar panels on their roof. Meaning that we powered everything in the business on the solar energy. They also had an electric car charger installed outside; so my boss would charge his electric car all day and he wouldn't have to charge it again for days and (on the rare occassion) any excess solar power was stored, it was actually sent to the mains where the business would make a small amount of money back by giving energy to the public system. And this is IRELAND!! Where it rains pretty much EVERY DAY. I've been pestering my Dad to put solar panels on our shed!

So, while Amazon isn't restricting AI content, the disclosures are now baked into the publishing process (that's not to say that people couldn't just lie and say "no, this wasn't generated by AI," BUT I would hope that there are harsher repercussions for anyone who uses AI and then lies about it).
@ZDPQC

Seems really unnecessary. I don't have to disclose what type of pen I used. AI is a tool not a cheat code. And it takes work to find time and edit what AI creates. Seems like Amazon is just trying to win over a fruitless argument about AI that's as fake as Monster Energy being Satanic. AI is not a threat or a reason to say "this art is less than". Really just proves the belief that artist are shallow elitist who gatekeep. Because AI allows anyone to create immediately. I'd rather have that than soulless graphic designers making millions while genuine artists with creative idea sget swept under the rug because they didn't make the art for a company or for thousands of dollars. The art world is the most radical of spectrums and the more you go up the.korw it's filled with soulless art made for embezzlers. Let people use AI .

@ZDPQC well, part of the problem is that some people are generating books through AI, and *not* editing them. Or as Phil mentioned in this video, using AI to pass off books as written by successful authors, impacting their reputation.

I’m part of a climate advocacy group, efficiency-based housing codes are something we’ve worked on in the past. A few years ago my town implemented a Green Development Standard that focused on things like heat retention and efficient use of water gas and electricity, as well as the construction process. We’ve butted heads with developers over a few different issues including this one, and I just gotta say it’s incredibly frustrating to be lectured on housing affordability by the same people who love building large single-family detached homes, who oppose mixed use zoning, and who have done campaigns to try to fear-monger about high-density housing (an actual thing that happened in my town). We also had developers threatening to sue the town for supposedly overstepping its authority, though luckily it’s been 4 years and that hasn’t happened. In terms of the actual policy, our town used 4 tiers of efficiency; a baseline tier that became mandatory when the code passed, and 3 successive tiers which provide incentives to developers who achieve the requirements. Over the course of 20 years those higher tiers will become the mandatory baseline, which is meant to reward ambitious and climate-conscious developers while allowing other developers more time to get used to efficiency best practices. In my opinion it’s quite reasonable and favourable for developers, especially considering the consequences of building homes that 1) aren’t resilient against the impacts of climate change, and 2) don’t mitigate the severity of climate change. But I guess those consequences would only be felt by the homeowner, not the homebuilder.

When we had a cold snap of -16C (3F) for a week, my indoor temperature never went below 20C (68F), and that was without having any radiators or other heating sources on in the apartment. I did a bunch of research into building out a van for mobile living. The first thing I discovered was how incredibly inefficient and wasteful household appliances and infrastructure are. Fridges are commonly built with the compressors on the BOTTOM (hot air rises) and not enough insulation. Buildings aren't insulated enough in general, leading to noise pollution, no noise privacy, and more expensive heat/cooling costs. Faucets and shower heads use multiple gallons of water PER MINUTE as the default fittings rather than cheap water-conserving alternatives using less than 1 gallon per minute. Until laws force builders to stop using cheap crap to build and design our homes, things will remain the same or even get worse.

Everything you said sounds great until you actually consider safety. A fridge with the compressor on top would be extremely top heavy. Can't imagine how many children would get crushed just because they accidentally ran into the fridge. Homes in the US are built to very strict codes. You don't pack the walls with as much insulation as possible because it's extremely flammable. Your van sounds nice and all, but most of us are living in the real world.

Well, simply spend the extra money/time and effort to shop for that efficiently constructed home then, if you want it you'll pay for it,and you wont settle for less. If enough people agree with you then the industry will follow what the market demands. The problem is that people(generally) can barely afford the cheaply built (and often inefficient) homes, much less spend time and money worrying about how efficient the home might be.

Im a french architect , we have very strict (and complex) building codes especially when it comes to environmental regulations . For instance , based on the 2020 Environmental Regulation , the « lifetime(40 years) primary energy consumption net impact on climate change » for a house is capped at 160 kgCO2/m2 and for collective housing it is 560 kgCO2/m2 for a building built in 2024 but 260kgCO2/m2 if its built after 2028 . That’s the type of regulation that we need in order to make a difference and even that feels too little . So hearing that the american lobbies are blocking a mere 10% improvement in energy efficiency in the second most polluting country in the world is so fucking grim I can’t even put it into words . The more I hear this kind of news the more I become tempted by radicalization .

On building codes: I work with them daily as a project manager/designer in a commercial architecture firm. Kentucky has not updated their codes since 2015 (and at that time adopted 2012 as their newest IBC year) some of the codes around the hospitals we design are still on 2006 codes (with additional references to older codes from the 1980s). Heck we still have codes for certain hospital rooms that require fax lines to equipment that are all Wi-Fi enabled now - we just haven’t updated to a year where Wi-Fi existed yet. I’ve been to the state capitol to lobby legislators for multiple years in a row to see if they will support updates and it’s a tiresome and fickle process to convince people that newer codes are in general beneficial to those that occupy the spaces we build and renovate. There are many parties fighting architects but our goal is really to protect the health, safety, and welfare of those around us.

Yo! I actually work as an energy inspector for residential homes here in Las Vegas. The builders are absolutely lying when it comes to costs when it comes to getting the homes more energy efficient. Often times when I am failing a home from the inspection it’s due to failures on the builders part to pay more attention to the construction and the trades who work there. Simple things like sealing drywall to top plates actually goes a long way to energy efficiency. For example my friend whose home is has I personally inspected has the same power bill as my rental even though his house is twice as large as my rental. Even if the homes cost more which they wouldn’t, homeowners will definitely make that money back on their power bill in a year.

I recently sold a rental property in CA and bought a place in Kansas City this past month. The price difference allowed my wife and I to look for a nicer place and I wanted to buy a high efficiency home as I enjoyed having solar panels on my property in California, which ended up paying for themselves in 6 years. I was sad to see that there was only one company in Kansas City building passive homes, but they only built custom designed homes that were over a million dollars. I found myself stuck buying a poorly built house because we were doing a 1031 exchange for the rental property and we had no time to have a high efficiency home built. I crunched the numbers for a similar size house to the one we bought and was shocked to see that the extra building costs for a passive home with solar in Missouri would have been 100% recouped in 9 1/2 years! Meaning I'd have more financial stability. Another bonus to the environment is that high efficiency homes last longer as they are built to be air and water tight. Hopefully our next home will be a passive house.

I was told by a friend over discord while on lunch at work about RT shutting down - we do RWBY watch parties when it was releasing regularly, and I've been a RT fan for probably over a decade. I remember just going 'well, that makes sense, things have changed and they're just not profitable and all of this makes sense.' I put on my RT jacket to go home as I do every day and when I looked at the logo I, luckily alone in the office at that point, broke down in a mess of tears and sobs. I cried on my way home, cried as I hung up my jacket on the end of my bed next to my wall covered in RT related posters, and then cried as I sat and calmed down. I think my adult brain rationalized the death of RT, but the teenager in me who only made it through being so depressed and so anxious and so traumatized in life when I was young BECAUSE of RT, came out and decided to grieve for me. I only made it because of the fun and creativity and talent behind RT, the personalities, the energy, the Monty Oum's of the world that all seemed to congregate into a space where you felt like family. I feel awful for everyone who worked day in and day out to bring it from a few guys basement to what it was at its peak. And no RT was not perfect, and none of this takes away from the people who had bad experiences in and with RT, but at the end of the day RT meant something different to everyone. As someone in the games industry; it's not just live service that game company/publishers/investors are vying for, It's "expandable" games too. I can understand why, I've personally helped launch over 80 indie games and if it's a single player, complete experience game, people are quick to say "dead game" or expect that there will be DLC or extra content which, unfortunately, isn't always the case for indies. It would need to reach heights of Cult of the Lamb, Dave the Diver, or Dredge (for recent examples) in order to even financially consider the extra dev time invested to create the extra expanded content. It's also saddening as there's tons of layoffs in the games industry and a lot of the roles getting laid off are key for these things that execs want to achieve.
@Summergaze

What I never understood about live service is that at some point( if they achieve their goal) you will play 1 or 2 games period. Yes you may buy skins or dlc, but there are only so many gamers. So at some point no one would buy other games or just get burned out. I dunno just a thought.

I grew up on the west coast with gas stove and swore by it for a long time, and had it in nearly every house/apartment I have lived in. I moved to Germany a little over a year ago into an apartment that was built ~1930s, having previously lived in a brand new apartment in the US the year prior to moving, as well as a 1940s house some time before that. In terms of appliances now, basically everything is electric, every 4th or 5th car I see is electric, and yet my electric bill here is a fraction of what I had been paying for stateside, and that's probably mostly due to heating and cooling cost reduction. The quality of insulation in terms of noise and temperature is absolutely wild in terms of efficiency. I used to be able to hear people yelling at each other out their car windows on a road half a block away while my apartment was closed up. Now I don't even hear any of the cars going through the intersection right outside my window in a ground floor apartment. The design is basically that the walls retain the heat/cool, not the air. So far it's been really interesting to experience the difference. Also, 0.7 speed? 2x or nothing!

I live in North Carolina. knowing several people building homes, they all say "make sure you get a good builder", because they all take advantage. builders saying their customers can't afford houses with updated code is an insulting logical fallacy to shift blame from the market's cost of doing business to bureaucratic red tape since that's the real burden of profit. legislate stricter code, you'll just shift the corruption from the builder to the inspection industry (as if they're not ridiculous already) this nonsense is the reason why shoddy infrastructure builds from 50yrs ago are a burden today. profit and cost determining the "right choice" and we're acting surprised.

Gas is now WAY more expensive than electric for heating these past couple years. Especially when we have those country wide extreme cold and winter storms like this January. My bill was over 2x normal that month, all due to the gas portion of the bill, because they went into "emergency" pricing. It's absolutely ridiculous because it's a service you HAVE to have to survive. Where I live there's zero choice in who you use and they won't budge an inch when it comes to huge unexpected bills. They won't accept any late payments. It's pay in full the day it's due or it's shut off immediately with a large reconnect fee. There's zero protections in my state as far as heat and electricity, so they have double or triple your bill overnight with no warning then immediately shut it off if you can't pay, even if it's below 0° outside and you have kids in the house. Hell, my cellphone, internet, rent/mortgage, fucking credit card companies aren't as strict and heartless as the electric company here which also does your gas and water, so when it's shut off EVERYTHING is shut off. All those others will work with you, set up payments, and most importantly not immediately shut off service. There's ppl I know who rent and have zero choice in whether they have gas or electric heat who got blindsided by $700+ bills last month when it's usually under $300 for this time a year and have young kids in the house who couldn't pay it all and they immediately shut it off. They shut it off for one guy I knew over being fucking $5 short. Even if you're on oxygen here they'll shut it off and not care.

My dad was a developer in the early 2000s. They build crazy energy efficient homes but couldn't stay in that industry because they were out-competed by cheaper builds. We've had the tech and know-how this entire time but companies are so worried about profit margins next quarter that they don't care about sustainability. I mean for pete's sake we make roof shingles out of petroleum by-products then wonder why roofs are melting. It is so obvious that things built to last are better for the environment, but companies refuse to do it. It's a problem in every industry. Planned obsolesce contributes to an enormous amount of trash every year. We could fix this tomorrow, but because companies would throw a hissy fit, politicians refuse to regulate them.

So while it's nice to see attention brought to matter, I also am not hopeful anything will be done about it soon, because there's really no incentive for Amazon to fix this mistake because they get such a huge cut from book sales. Also as AI tech gets better these books will only become more convincing.

@dutchvanl
@dutchvanl 8 ай бұрын
@@Oshawatt I don't disagree with the key element you're getting at, which is it's expensive to be poor. I can't save $60k for a downpayment because I'm spending $24k/year in rent and the cost of housing goes up faster than my paycheck, so I keep throwing away $24k/year instead of building any equity. I think we need to tackle both problems though. Housing availability and affordability alongside making sure they're sustainable. We're one of the wealthiest, most powerful nations to ever exist, the idea that we just can't solve the problem is absurd. The issue that I had specifically with the Boulder fires, was you had folks who'd been able to buy multi-million dollar properties, had those properties insured, got government assistance to meet the new building codes... And they STILL complained about it. When someone who owns a $5m property complains about an extra $20k for sustainability upgrades that THEY VOTED FOR... The hypocrisy just kills me.

About the 'greening' of our houses, this isn't just better but an inevitability. As stated on the piece, putting up solar panels might be expensive but on long run it will save you money, specially if you have a large south facing roof and also install a battery bank to store the energy. This could make your energy bill drop down to 0 specially in the summer. With regard to insulating the house, it also makes sense since this will mean less energy to heat up or cool down the house. But my biggest point is the induction hobs. I'm a bit of a technocrat, and I was all for the induction hobs, but as I've been renting for the past 18 years, I wasn't going to buy an appliance to furbish a house that isn't mine. Until I moved into the apartment that I'm living now. The electric hob (it's an old hot plate hob) had some damage and I ended up buying a small 2 plate induction hob. Boy is this thing great. It uses very little energy to do the same work. It's easy to clean as the plate doesn't get hot, so any spill will not be transformed into a crusty lump of black goo on the surface that's impossible to remove without some industrial soap and a lot of scrubbing. This also makes the cleaning of pots and pans a lot easier as all the heat is transferred to whatever you're cooking instead of the metal on the pan. It's faster than any other appliance since most of the energy is delivered to whatever you're trying to cook, instead of the air. The only disadvantage is that you'll need specific pots and pans that are induction ready.

Putting solar panels on my house is easily one of the best financial decisions I've ever made. It dropped my monthly electricity bill in the summer from nearly $500 to $40. The only reason I have to pay the $40 is a mandatory connection fee by my electric company and the fact that Net Metering isn't enforced here in northern Florida. It's also largely made my house power outage proof during hurricane season. I don't have to worry about fueling a generator or making sure it's ready in case of emergency.

I think one of the few reasons why Rooster Teeth is closing down is because they took down their well loved show, RWBY, off from KZbin so that they can get more people to subscribe to their streaming service and they assumed that they weren't getting much from KZbin. Not a lot of people could afford to subscribe to a streaming service, let alone another one. Since trying to afford to subscribe to a number of streaming services is becoming more costly than cable or satellite.

I highly recommend induction cooktops. There is an effect on the air but they are also just nicer to cook on. I grew up with gas and got glass ceramic when I moved out and for years I missed the gas but since I got the induction I have never missed the gas again. The induction doesn't heat up your kitchen or your cooking utensils, they don't damage the bottom of cookware and yet they are responsive and fast.

So for the building stuff. I live in PHX AZ and many, many houses get hit by sun almost all day. That means if every house just had solar not only would that help everyone lowering power bills but would help lower emissions like crazy. Also the extra protection of the roof from the sun keeping the house cooler. And say if we get government lowering taxes or something on homes with it as they would be better for the environment would be a help make people want to do it more. Only people that suffer would be who ever owns power companies. I know that's not ideal for them but I could only imagine how cheap power would be here if it was a thing. I wish I could get solar panels on the house I live in but that initial cost of getting them and then making sure the roof can hold it plus probably need to get the house rewired to accommodate the power from the panels, The cost for it is high to make an old house have it even more than having the home built to have it in the first place.
