I feel like Christ would feel fine about the consumerism aspect of Christmas as long as everybody who was able to, donated food and toys to the annual toy drives/soup kitchens. I've never been religious, but the big thing I took away from mandatory religion classes was that Christ only ever wanted people to help those less fortunate than themselves, and to stay humble by remembering that, even if you're not doing great yourself, there's always someone in a worse position who could use your help. And that's a GREAT message for anyone. Buying a bunch of toys to donate around the holidays is still engaging in the commercialisation of Christmas, but at least it goes towards something positive - making a sick child stuck in hospital on the big day feel a bit happier. Meanwhile I'm sure people like Alex Jones wouldn't donate anything to anyone, and would describe it as a certain word (hint: it begins with 's'!).

The Pearl of Great Price is a very pertinent parable here. In it, Jesus tells of a man who sacrifices all pleasures and luxuries so that he may save the money to purchase a fabulous pearl. Basically, the fewer possessions one has (the man's sacrifices), the greater one's reward in Heaven (the pearl of great price). It is very much the antithesis of our modern hyperconsumerist Christmas. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of these people who don't like Tesco not always saying “Christmas Card” view it as evidence that they've earned their money and they can blow it on whatever they want. when i worked retail, a lady once complained to me at the register that someone had supposedly told her "happy holidays" at the walmart earlier. she went, "why not 'merry christmas'?" i said, "they probably wanted you to have a happy new year, too." christmas is a quixotic hell in retail, so i was exhausted and i think my brain broke. unprompted, i suddenly sang, "and a happy new year. good tidings we bring..." then i stopped, because i forgot the rest of the words. the woman appeared to be buffering for the rest of the transaction. she responded to my prompts ("do you have a rewards card?" etc) but didn't really speak until after she had paid. then she narrowed her eyes and looked directly at my face. she said very unmerrily, "merry christmas." and i smiled and said, "oh, thank you so much! you as well!" sometimes i still think about her face. and about how i got my very first traffic ticket driving home that night.

My ultra conservative aunt always invites my 100-yr-old grandmother’s favorite catholic priest over for the holidays, and likes to bring this topic up. It amazes me how Catholicism is the oldest and most conservative sect of Christianity but its priest and members are generally the most progressive, especially amongst American Christians. I think part of it is that catholic priests have to go to school for a very long time and have to devote their whole life to be priest, as well as sacrifice their social and romantic lives. Because of this, they actually know what it means to be a true Christian. But this isolation is also why so many catholic priests are pedophiles, so there needs to be a balance.
@JetShanghai Жыл бұрын
@@mattschumacher4581 Catholicism is by no means the oldest or the most conservative sect of Christianity. Orthodox Christianity has them beat on that, and don't have the whole priests being touchie problem that Catholicism does. Mandated clerical celibacy created that entire scandal.

@@laurenf.7922 No, because Catholicism split from Orthodoxy. If you compare the early theology of the Church with that of today, you will see that Rome departed in 1054. Which for her is like a dog hearing the can opener going. We stop at Wal-Mart. I walked directly to the outdoor section, which is always converted into the holiday section. I stopped and said "What do you see?" "christmas stuff" she says. "What was in the season candy area when we came in?" "Christmas stuff." I left. "Wait, we're not shopping?" "We're window shopping." To home depot. Same deal. Same response. She obviously knows what's going on and is now trying to convince me to head home. "Oh no. We're far from done." Fun fact: The "War on Christmas" actually existed. In the 17th century english Puritans (aka the people who don't want anyone to have fun) wanted to outlaw all forms of entertainment what so ever on christmas. Churches, inns and stores were to be closed and people were supposed to stay at home and reflect on god. This backfired because even though they managed to get the churches to close they couldn't really force any trader to close their shop or that people stay at home, so instead of mass the people went out in the town and got drunk, bought stuff and were merry in the streets. The Puritans did not make friends with all of their agressive conservatism so a lot of them migrated to the american colononies, mostly New England. The call came form inside the House the entire time!

That's not quite correct. A law was specifically passed to force stores to stay open. Ordinarily, just like today, Christmas was considered a special feast day, and was thus celebrated by everybody going to special church services, and then having a huge party, and all the shops and inns and such would be closed so the owners could party too. The Puritans believed this was frivolous, and everything should go about as per usual, except with more emphasis on contemplation of Christ. Now, this certainly didn't entirely work out as intended, as there were pro-Christmas riots, but those were not successful, and indeed, while people continued to quietly gather for Christmas celebrations, there were no large parties, or masses of people out on the town. And of course, most people didn't get dunk because the Puritans were against drunkeness and would have arrested them for that.

Well duh, that's the point of conservatism is upholding the structures that work to allow everyone to be free and have equal opportunity, it makes sense that they be consistent, and they're better for it since there's a foundation for them to rationalize their positions on. Classic liberalism is about questioning things and challenging conservative beliefs which is also good, but modern liberalism has forgone open free discussion and questioning with cancelling if you don't adhere to a brand new narrative that was socially constructed within incredibly shortened time period in human history created by hyper speed paced media cycles in our information age we live in, then attempt to make changes that will likely cause irreparable damage before we even have a solid basis or rationalization of what we are preaching. And yes, I agree with the overall premise that the "the libs are destroyin our Christmas" thing is pretty overblown, overall I think no one really cares and people are able to celebrate whatever holiday and religion they want. The only problems that can be run into is when people do get cancelled or attacked or called the almighty r word for calling this time of year Christmas. As well as White Christmas being written for a movie literally called Holiday Inn, it was written for Berlin’s son who passed away on Christmas Day. It’s always weird when people say that happy holidays is anti Christian, like we haven’t been using happy holidays to include both Christmas and New Years forever, bc the likelihood of seeing someone between those two holidays is extremely small and they’re literally back to back within a week of each other
@TenositSergeich Жыл бұрын
Don't forget other notable Christian winter holidays, at very least Saint Nicolas Day (where we get Santa Klaus and gifts). Talking head "Christians" have little real knoweldge of Christianity, they just treat it as The Good Side because they are comfortable with Christmas and uncomfortable with things they don't know. So many of them riff on "Judeo-Christian" values but don't even know what's Hanukkah about, even if it is a pretty minor holiday that outsiders bring up the most because, well, its around Christmas. Ask them about Yom Kippur and they probably immediately will start spewing bile (and people like Ben Shapiro will let them because money to themselves is worth more than their culture being discriminated against).

I was raised Catholic but I'm not a particularly religious adult and I love it, too, so it makes sense. It's just a fun thing to do, and what's wrong with that? If it means something to your religion fine, celebrate it the way you want, no one's saying you can't, but don't take a dump on the rest of us who want to enjoy it, too, and celebrate it the way we want to.

Info wars is so inexplicably awful. One of my close friends has gotten sucked into this weird extremist far-right echo chamber, and they seem to have genuinely gotten stupider. They went from being a generally cool and funny guy to someone who just spews racist conspiracy theories in every conversation without fail, and seems to no longer have the ability to listen to other people. It's fucked.

In their defence those info war products got sued for containing dangerous amounts of lead so if they're consuming them there may be a reason they're empirically becoming dumber lol

By getting mad at "Happy Holidays," saying it isn't including Christmas, they are basically stating they don't think Christmas is a "holy day."

I'm embarrassed of my past self, because I took people like this seriously. PragerU, Ben Shapiro, even Alex Jones. I bought into their harmful ideas and that is part of the reason it took me a while to accept that I am bisexual. I wish I could go back and shake sense into myself because I was so bitter and cynical back then. I appreciate you putting out videos like this, because they could be what helps people break out of the destructive path they are going down.

You shouldn't be embarrassed you should be proud of yourself. Good on you for coming to a better conclusion. It is very hard to change your worldview it takes a lot of self-reflection and putting aside your bias. Most people are unable to do so

It's funny how when anyone says Judeo-Christian values they're talking about exclusively Christian values. Anyone else notice that?

it's also comical whenever they bring up muslims negatively in that exact context, because the beliefs Islam holds means the vast majority of values shared by jews and christians are also shared by muslims, to the point where i'm half sure jews and muslims have more in common in how they practise their religions. It's great.

I don't get why the Christ fandom keeps co-opting Judaism into their arguments in December when they spend the rest of the year blaming us for everything wrong with the world. Oy gevalt.

It lets conservative Christians exclude Islam (and shit on Middle Eastern people without being overtly racist) by pretending they're somehow protecting Jews from Muslims. Same reason they go on about Muslim antisemitism while ignoring it in their own ranks.

It's to get more people on their "team" when it's time to vote. There was a time when Catholics, Protestants, Baptists, etc., were considered basically different religions, and one would not want to vote for a candidate who didn't share the same faith. So they made up this umbrella term "Christian," so it feels like they're all in it together, so they get more consolidated numbers. Throw "Judeo" in there, and you have an even bigger meaningless word to manipulate people with.

Because (at least in America; a country founded by people so religious Europe in the 17th century couldn't stand them) There are Christian sects who want Israel to destroy Palestine because it would bring about the end of the world and they would go to heaven faster.

@@pauldecker4630 I would add that the fundamentalist Neo-con christians have the belief that Jesus is going to destroy the Jews who don't acknowledge him when he returns.

One time someone told me merry Christmas and without thinking, I said merry Christmas back. We’re both in the gulag now, but he’s my jailhouse lover and gets people to give us cigarettes for a round with my bum, so it’s going well.
