I saw them in the mid-90s (Pere Ubu opened for them-- phenomenal!!). Not only did They Might Be Giants rock their quirky awesomeness, they did a fierce cover of Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein." It was incredible to see them flex their "rock hard" muscles. It was an absolutely amazing show all-around!

Yep. They were my first concert, and I've seen them several times since. Evey single time, they bring their A game. And TMBG fans are always so thrilled to meet other TMBG fans (nice to meet you!! Put away your big blue cigars!). Reddit's r/tmbg sub is filled with friendly people, I've never seen a rude comment. Not one. I don't expect Brad & Lex to dive super deep into their catalog because it would take quite awhile and they've got lots of other stuff to check out, but I'm so happy this song got chosen. But yeah, if anyone is reading this and hasn't seen them live, do yourself a favor. Even if you don't know most of the songs they play, you will have an absolute blast. And I can guarantee you won't get beat up.

Both are true. New York was originally founded by the Dutch and was called New Amsterdam, then when England acquired it it was renamed after the English city of York. Constantinople was originally named after Roman emperor Constantine who ordered the city built (although he didn't live to see it completed) and was Constantinople for over 1000 years until the Ottoman Turks conquered it in the 1400's and ultimately renamed it to Istanbul.

Yes, New York was originally called New Amsterdam because the original settlers there were Dutch. You may have heard of an old cigarette brand called Peter Styversent. That was named after a governor (now it would be mayor) of the city from those dayswho was a tobacco merchant and exporter. You may easily have heard "They Might be Giants" hundreds of times before when their song "Boss of Me" was used as the theme for hit TV show "Malcolm in the Middle". The song was originally a hit for a singing group called "The Four Lads" in 1953. It was a funny song written to mark the 500th anniversary of the fall of the Ottoman empire which caused the city's renaming. Next from They Might be Giants? agree with comments below "Birdhouse in your Soul" would be good!

Yes New York was New Amsterdam. It was a Dutch settlement then sold to the British, who then named it After York in England thus New York. The Country New Zealand was also settled by the Dutch, and named after Zeeland.

Lol you definitely need to hear more. They Might Be Giants are irreverent and funny and topical, they explore a lot in their music. Please listen too "They'll need a crane", or "purple toupee"...

Yes, New York isn't a New England state, because it was settled by the Dutch, called New Amsterdam. The New Yorkers' accent is a Dutch twang that was never lost.

it is - From Wiki - is a 1953 novelty song, with lyrics by Jimmy Kennedy and music by Nat Simon. It was written on the 500th anniversary of the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans. The lyrics humorously refer to the official renaming of the city of Constantinople to Istanbul. The song's original release, performed by The Four Lads, was certified as a gold record. Numerous cover versions have been recorded over the years, most famously a 1990 rock version by They Might Be Giants.

I LOVE TMBG! They are accurate, though this is a cover. With a baby on the way definitely check out their Kids albums. Catchy and educational! My favorite song and their biggest hit is "Don't Let's Start." I also love their stranger stuff. Particle Man forever. When they first started in Brooklyn, they're from MA, you could "Dial A Song" daily for a different song or snippet on their answering machine. The number was in the Ad's in The Village Voice.

The Dutch originally founded a colony on the Hudson Bay. Trying to advertise it among the large Dutch city of Amsterdam, they called it New Amsterdam. When the English later took over control of the colony, they tried to attract settlers from the English duchy of York, so they renamed the colony "New York". Long before that, emperor Constantine came to power in the Roman empire. He elevated the city of Byzantium in Asia Minor (present day Turkey) to be the administrative capital of the eastern half of the empire, and the city grew and was renamed Constantinople in his honor. Constantine was also famously as the first Christian emperor of Rome, who ended the worship of Roman pagan gods and converted the whole empire to Christianity. While the western half of the Roman Empire later fell, the eastern half continued into the 16th century. The people who lived in it still called themselves "Romans", but because Rome was no longer part of it, modern historians call it the Byzantine Empire, after the original name of Constantinople, which remained it's capital. The Byzantium Empire was eventually conquered by the Ottomans in the 16th century. Because the Ottomans were Muslims, they did not want to keep the name of a famously Christian emperor on such a major city, so they renamed it Istanbul. It has been ruled by Muslims ever since, as the Ottoman Empire until World War One, and then as Turkey, so either way they kept the name Istanbul.
