On my second trip to New York City we took one of the many double decker buses for a guided tour to all of the boroughs. 2 things us old Gen-Xers can tell you: 1. The city was originally called Byzantium but they later renamed it after Emperor Constantine of Rome. He was the guy who made Rome Christian, so when the Muslim Ottomans eventually conquered the city long after Rome fell, they didn't want their main city named after a Christian emperor so they changed it. The song is basically about that. It's actually an old song that was covered a bunch of times before They Might Be Giants made it famous, largely because of this cartoon, which was essentially music video for said song that just happened to air during a Tiny Toon Adventures episode back in the 90s. 2. You need to follow this up with TMBG's other Tiny Toons video, "Particle Man".

Fun song, fun reaction. The song was on all the jukeboxes when I was in high school, but only old folks like me remember jukeboxes. I tracked down the original & found this info: "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" is a 1953 swing-style song, with lyrics by Jimmy Kennedy and music by Nat Simon. The lyrics comically refer to the official 1930 renaming of the city of Constantinople to Istanbul. It also references other renamed cities, specifically the renaming of New York City from New Amsterdam. "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" was originally recorded by the Canadian group The Four Lads on August 12, 1953. This recording was released by Columbia Records as catalog number 40082. It first reached the Billboard magazine charts on October 24, 1953, and it peaked at #10. It was the group's first gold record.

My first exposure to they might be giants was on a sunday night radio show in NYC called "Idiots Delight" hosted by Vin Scelsa. He came on at 10pm on sunday night and stayed on until at least 2 in the morning and his format was "Tonight I want to talk about X" there was no rhyme or reason to it besides it interested Vin in some way and if it interested Vin it was entertaining to listen to him ramble about it. He started talking about a movie he saw on "the late late show" staring George C. Scott called "They Might Be Giants" in the movie Scott plays a man who is either completely crazy or is actually Sherlock Holmes misplaced in time. He talked about the movie all night and it was a wonderful show. Right before Vin ended for the night a guy called up and said "I love that movie, I've never heard anyone else talk about it. I loved that movie so much we named our band after it" Vin heard the word band and invited them on the show the next Sunday. The next sunday I was driving back from Lollapalooza ninetytwooza in Pennsylbamma and never got in range of the show to hear how it went. TMBG music was a regular feature on Vins show for the rest of the shows run. Usually going into or out of commercials or during bathroom breaks.

This of course is a cover they did of a song in the 1950’s. This is an OLD song from the 1950's! It's been covered a few times over the decades, but this is one that is probably the most well known. It came out while I was in high school (1990), and TOTALLY spoke to my "strange" personality! You should check out their other hit single, "Birdhouse In Your Soul"!

They Might Be Giants is one of the gentlest bands on the planet. A lot of their fans are children.

Wow. I've heard this chorus before, but never knew it was a real song by The Might Be Giants. Thanks for sharing. Dude, they are talking about Turkey, yo!

Constantinople was the Roman name for the city that is now called Istanbul in Turkey and TMBG are brilliantly playing around with the semantics of a city with two names in this song. The next songs of TMBG’s you should check out are Birdhouse in Your Soul, Dead, The Statue Got Me High and Your Racist Friend.

A large costal and historical city in Turkey. Named “Constantinople” under Christian rule and “Istanbul” under Muslim rule today.

First sung by The Four lads in 1953....also by Bette Midler in her Divine Miss M tour as her lounge singer character "Delores Delargo the Toast of Chicago" - great song. The Turkish city of Constantinople was renamed Istanbul in 1930.

They Might Be Giants are brilliant, so many good songs. Birdhouse in Your Soul, Particle Man, Don't Let's Start, Your Racist Friend (probably one of the best calling out someone songs ever), so many great songs.

Coool that you did a TMBG song, they have literally hundreds of amazing songs and are still active today. Lots of people will be suggesting other top picks, I can't personally even choose. As I'm sure others will point out, Istanbul is the capital of Turkey, which used to be called Constantinople (named after the Roman emperor Constantine when the capital moved from Rome (very simplified)... TMBG does a lot of kids/educational songs but also a lot of seriously awesome alt-rock-type stuff. My personal favorites at the moment are You're On Fire, The Communists Have the Music, and Push Back the Hands, all pretty recent. Anyway, love watching your vids, thanks! Oh, and Spiraling Shape of course

They Might be Giants have done many songs, many times, they have been used in kids shows. Other songs I know of: Hotdog Song (Mickey Mouse Club House), Particle Man (Used in Tiny Toons like this one), Where in the World is Carmen San Diego (from the TV show in the 90’s). Another set of funny/comedy music is by the Arrogant Worms. Winnebago. Constantinople was the name for Istanbul. It was either the Ottoman Empire or remnants that changed it to Istanbul. (Little sketchy on the history there)

Istanbul is the the largest city in Turkey. It used to be called Constantinople, but then the Seljuk Turks invaded about 1000 years ago and changed the name of the city. This song is a cover - the original version was done by The Four Lads in 1958.
