Not gonna lie, this is probably one of my most favourite STG videos! The Nissan Leaf is an EV pioneer and to see one being turned into a race car demonstrator, is awesome and it looks fabulous! Also, its fair to say if all EVs sounded like that, so called “petrolheads” have nothing to worry about! They can go to bed every night knowing their future remains secure and can continue to live their passion. I think you’ll love the Leaf road car, Sam, just a tip, always switch the E-Pedal function on in town, one-pedal driving no problem.

Great video Sam. As a massive petrolhead who loves the noise of a proper engine I think that video has actually got me excited about an electric future for the first time. Maybe we can still have fun?!

Of course we can continue to have fun, that’s been the case from day one. In my opinion, there’s more to a car’s fun factor than simply the noise of the engine and exhaust. If that’s all you look for in a car, then you’re gonna be miserable in the future, during the EV revolution. We can choose to be sour and selfish and blame governments for implementing legislation, climate change activists for their part. Or we can look at ourselves and find new ways to enjoy the cars of the future. (Ie. us enthusiasts can and should find other aspects about cars to enjoy, communication with the car, steering and brake feel, etc.) That’s all its gonna take for the enthusiast community to be happier going forward. Look, I love a noisy ICE as much as the next car guy, but I always find time appreciate EVs for what experience they can provide. Plus, it’s not like EVs have no sound, go and watch Remove Before Race’s video on the Mercedes EQS and have a listen as the car accelerates in sport mode. The sound it made blew me away!

In terms of even ‘normal’ EV’s I had a tonne of fun in my first test drive, doing ridiculous 3 car overtakes on country roads that I would never attempt in a petrol car, too bloody slow to get going. Never looked back in terms of my own cars. But I’m still a petrolhead. I think supercars and classics deserve the petrol.

They actually make a Leaf Nismo for the Japanese market, with suspension and styling upgrades. No bump up in power and torque, but it can hold its own on a twisty road.

Well that's the best looking car that Nissen has made since the 300Z . If they made a slightly cheaper version for road use it would more than likely outsell the GTR and the the Nissan Z .

Never driven an EV? Lol. I imagine the lack of dampening made sure you can hear all the inverters/motors more. I own a Nissan Leaf but the older gen 30kWh. This is based off of the 40/62kWh with 2 motors vs the 1. Certainly faster than 0-60 in 7.5 seconds of the full bodied ones

I get the tech transfer to road cars. Can’t get excited by the racing. Could get excited if Shell took the lead and put their EV charge stations under some really comfortable welcoming infrustructure. Until then its V-Power all the way.

Either it has more than one gear or they must be used for regulating regen power levels.

I believe the transmission you find in say the Porsche Taycan, is for Low speed acceleration which is where EVs should excel. Some motors could use a gearbox to optimise the torque delivery in every driving situation, just like an ICE car.

These are called silhouette cars in Motorsport and they absolutely aren't a new thing. The Peugeot 205 rally car was re bodied out of carbon fibre, was mid-engined, they added F1 grade ground effect aerodynamics, and a turbo charger the size of a dustbin. Silhouette cars are also used in most touring car championships. And kind of in the WRC today.

The Nissan Leaf is a truly awful car, the electric part is fine, actually very good but as a car it’s dangerous, especially in the wet. I’ve had a Leaf, now a Tesla Model3 and Tesla are light years ahead in all areas, the Leaf is an embarrassment in comparison.

lol this isn't a modified nissan leaf. This is a carbon fibre race car with minimal to no links to any production car. Probably the only thing it uses from the road car is the motors. Cynical marketing exercise.

Even worse when you factor in their end of life. What are we going to do with all the lithium and other rare earth metals involved with the production of electric vehicles in say 10 years time when all the batteries are knackered as they are very hard to recycle / dispose of in an environmentally friendly way. Also they already estimate the world won’t be able to produce enough electric by 2040 due to the increase of use due to computers yet we keep pushing electric vehicles. I’m really not sure why we haven’t tried to push electric/ petrol hybrids more rather than pure electric.

@@Fraser-369 Exactly. I would hedge a guess also that more recycled materials can be used in the production of combustion engines in the first place. I can't remember which company it is (think it was ford) but they were using millions of "Soda" tins to make the engine blocks for the cars like fiestas etc. Electric technology is incredible, but I feel as though we have pushed electric to far to fast. I still think something like a 1.0L engine and an electric motor would be more efficient in terms of balancing fossil fuel and electric consumption Vs environmental damage/ particulates/ recycle-ability etc

….. and what’s more, CO2 is the food of all plant life on earth and is at a dangerously low level now. We need more in the atmosphere not less. Don’t need to go EV at all.
