There are two types of US pennies. Those made before 1982 are nearly pure copper (95%). Those made after 1982 are mostly zinc (97.5%) with a thin copper plating. Both types were made in 1982. The pure copper ones are likely to behave differently than the zinc ones when put on dry ice.

Thats very neat. I would like to see what would happen if you had two quarters pressed together side by side and pressed them into the dry ice together. Would they flap in solidarity, flap against each other, or flap randomly and independent of each other?
@skorne1497 жыл бұрын
How fast will dry ice sublimate in a vacuum chamber? Can it turn to a liquid in there?
@TheActionLab7 жыл бұрын
+Skorned One it actually sublimates slower since there is no air to heat it. And you need high pressure to turn it into a liquid, like 5 atmospheres
@skorne1497 жыл бұрын
Does it need to be in the gas phase before going to the liquid phase or can you apply pressure to the solid phase and liquefy it? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions.
@TheActionLab7 жыл бұрын
+Skorned One once you are above 5 ATM pressure then it is similar to water. If it is solid you have to heat it up to melt it to a liquid. If you heat it too much it will boil to a gas.
@skorne1497 жыл бұрын
Got it, so once the pressure is > 5 ATM it behaves like water at 1 ATM, that actually makes perfect sense. Thank you! I feel a little bit smarter now, lol...

@imbwildrd3693 Жыл бұрын
I think the ridges on the coin are a major factor in flappiness. There are more gaps for the gas to escape out of where the coin edge meets the dry ice making the coin flap more violently. The coins with the smooth edge did not flap well, smooth surface allows the gas to smoothly exit the space beneath the coin. Thoughts?

This is very cool. Question. (Hopefully someone can help)- Your hands generate heat. And so that heat will transfer onto the coin when holding the coin. Wouldn’t that transferred heat leave the coin soon after you let go? - Or can a coin retain heat, which still causes the reaction?

This can probably somehow power a pump (via electromagnetic fields like with the copper tube) that will keep the Boyle's flask+propylene glycol going indefinitely. A small turbine can then charge a refrigeration unit to create even MORE dry ice! I still don't know how a 5W laser could figure into it, but it should-- because I just want to involve a laser in it.
